    This is why you diversify your wealth into different investment vehicles. Do T-bills, Do Mutual Funds, Keep Foreign Currencies, Trade crypto if need be.

    Jessica, thanks for the insightful information. However, I think there's another perspective to look at it. While it's definitely a great idea to hedge a portion of ones portfolio in USD, GBPs, ie forex, there's something to say for tbills when compounding interest comes in. Although the analysis and outcomes hold for a simple interest comparison, it doesn't really hold against a compounding interest even with the performance of our t-bills rate say for the last 10 years. Compound interest changes the dynamics. I'd love to discuss the numbers if it stirs up your interest.

      I don't think this applies to someone who earns in dollars because even if you travel you need to change your money into local currency to do any transactions. & comparing to inflation someone as to think twice to put cash a side in a dollar account than investing somewhere.

    I just came across this video and it’s so helpful. I was going to change dollars to buy treasury bills a few months back but when I sat and did the math, I saw it was such a dumb move to make. I’m happy I didn’t buy Tb. I’m curious to know if there’s anyway to invest in dollars here in Ghana without changing it into cedis.

    You’ve made a good point. In America, we are more worrying about the economy in general when it comes to investing. When the economy is flourishing, the interest rate on return tends to be great... but when the economy is in recession, the interest rate on return is likely to be low. I would not mind buying treasury bills in a good economy at all.

    This is such a great video and kudos to you for putting it up. I think your calculation based on simple interest and investing for just a short term of just 91 days or six months will definitely result in a fall in face value of your initial capital in dollar terms. However there is the magic of compound interest (rolling over interest + capital for the next 91 day tenure), thus if you keep this same amount and roll over every 91 day for a period of say 4 to 7 years your results will be greater in both cedi and dollar terms. You can try that out. All in all to get the best out of every investment you must be in it for the long term. Thank you.

    @JessicaOS Good content but you failed to acknowledge the compounding interest part, which I still think makes the T-bill not a bad choice, especially when you have some big funds to lend to the goverment for some time enough. Remember the foreign exchange rate is also NEVER static.

    Hello from the US! That example calculation was extremely helpful. There are central banks in many countries that are purposefully devaluing their own currency against the dollar right now. All for the sake of keeping exports/imports competitive. There's a dollar shortage and central banks are low on foreign holdings aka US debt. Long story short, the dollar isn't dead by a long shot, it's just being bought on the cheap right now and that's about to change very soon.

    I’m glad I came across your channel. This is the first video I’m watching. I just transferred money last week to invest in a T-Bill for a year. For me personally it is better than me opening an ISA in the U.K. as the interest rate isn’t great and hasn’t been for years. I have purchased a house in Ghana. My plan is to have multiple streams of income. When I’ve left money in my bank in my savings account in Ghana (Barclays or whatever their new name is) they chopped my money.

    Thank you very much Jess for your impressive analysis. I think I've got a theory from your analysis. This is it. If you want to benefit much from a treasury bill, let the exchange rates guide you. Hence when exchange rates are looking good over time there's much gain in treasury bills. And when exchange rates are high over time there's less gain in treasury bill.
    But whatever you do you are better off buying a Tbill than locking your cash in a bank account.

    • @maxwellcobbah4349
      @maxwellcobbah4349 3 роки тому

      And also Tbills bought for a year would be great (thus the interest involved) when exchange rates are looking good than the 91 and 182 days terms.

    I get your analysis but it is quite simplistic. The entry time and exit time with the dollar may or may not be beneficial but T'bill is risk-free and you are certain of the amount you will receive. If your appetite for risk is high then the dollar would be a good option, otherwise stick to T-Bill.

    • @augustinedonkor6438
      @augustinedonkor6438 3 роки тому

      It's never true that t-bill is risk free. The only risk t-bill enjoys is default-free risk. Apart from that, it is susceptible to inflation risk, exchange rate risk etc etc

    • @michaelowusu4972
      @michaelowusu4972 3 роки тому +1

      @@augustinedonkor6438 This is known by people who have learnt Finance. To the ordinary person on the street, risk-free means default risk. It is believed inflation and exchange rate risked are catered for in the rate they are provided.

    What's better is changing that money into dollars and buying global stable stock like Tesla and Apple, which mostly have one way to go: up. In the same period that Jess described, if you have bought a Tesla or Apple, both splitted into 4-1 and 5-1, the gains would have been massive. Just food for thoughts. We live in a global economy and your money do not need to work where you live but where it can grow

    I think the illustration is not balanced, you have only outlined the risks of investing in TBs, what about the benefits. When the currency of country depreciates, that affects the prices of goods and services because of imports, in the end inflation goes up. To make the TBs attractive - the central banks tend to match the inflation rate or above. So yes, in the short term which you should have said, TB’s attract exchange loses, in the long term they always win or very minimal loses.

    • @JessicaOS

      Point one, would be valid if the cedi continues to depreciate. Point 2. you lose purchasing power if the cedi continues to depreciate and yet just sits in your account. Conclusion, it's not smart at all to just keep your money in savings

      Treasury bills have to be in local currency
      However a customer can purchase a dollar or euro bond - this is subject to the bank.

    I love how open minded you are about investing, I read an article of investors that made good money within few months from shorting, so please I'd really love more tips and clues on how to outperform the market and make such profit using options

      Hard assets are going up, the fed doesn't measure those because that would give it away. We have inflation.
