Gotta love it when a plan comes together!!! I don't have hardly a problem with root mealies. The ants bring me the above type. My problem is cactus scale on my Ariocarpus. Hi, I have question about the soil mix... I noticed that you are using your old one with J.I. compost instead of coco coir, is there a specific reason or rather lack of difference? I actually bought coco, worm droppings + "the fancy rocks" recently to repot my plants but I was kinda slow with that for few reasons and still havent done it, is there something to look for or just your older recipe doesnt make much difference?
I’ve got a few plants, mostly Haworthia that are in coco coir instead of JI, so far they’re doing good. Also got some in different types of mixes with coir that I’m doing an experiment on to see how they do, there will be an update on those ones towards the end of the year. At the moment I’m not confident enough to repot everything into a mix with coco coir until I see how the roots on the plants that are in it are doing. Thank you for watching and commenting 🌵☀️🌼🌺🏜
@@Cactimania Thanks, I'll repot mine to coco anyway as I basically heard only good stuff about coco + it will be a great combo as a substrate for watering with hydroponic nutriens from the bottom or from anywhere

Nice healthy new roots, thats awesome. How do you actually noticed that there was some issues? Im always scared with root mealys but i dont want to disturb my plants like every other month, any tips?
There were loads of baby mealies (crawlers) underneath the pots. With root mealies they tend to go around the base of the plant as well. With the Aloe plant it just generally looked sick, wasn’t taking up water and there was a rotting smell coming from the pot. Always check underneath your pots and around the drainage holes. Thank you for watching and commenting 🌵☀️🌺🌼🏜
@@Cactimania Thanks for sharing your experience with me/us. I potted up all cactis in clay pots so they only have one drainage hole at the buttom which is covered with a big stone from inside to not let the soil fall out. This could make it kinda hard to control it this way 😊 I gave up on using organic parts in my potting media because i always had issues with gnats in the summer time so i decided to only use mineral soil for all my plants. I though about checking my plants after every season and give the a new soil anyways. Not sure if thats to much, i just want to keep everything clean and healthy
@@YHC1R Yeah I tend to use mostly mineral components in my mixes now, very little organic material. You will generally know if a plant has a root mealybug problem, the main one being it won’t take up water and just generally look sick like my Aloe did. They are definitely a nightmare pest, and here in the UK there isn’t really any effective products you can buy to deal with them, systemic etc. 🌵☀️🌺🌼🏜
@@Cactimania Yeah i am always afraid of these little pests since i cant store my collection in a green house i keep them at my window spot during the winter where humidity is to low and temperature is to high 😓 I try my best to check them every other week and give them a little drink once a month but sometimes i find some single ones sitting on my cacti, im always afraid once i spotted one. Here in Germany i have some good stuff to treat pests but im always afraid to use all that aggressive stuff. I mainly use neem and alcohol to fight whatever sitting on them 🙂
Did you do anything preventative for the rest of your collection when you found these nasty creatures? I’ve just repotted most of my collection and finally got to repotting a huge jade today and it has root mealies. They haven’t spread (yet!) but should I put anything preventative on the other plants?
At the time, no. It’s very hard to find anything in the UK that works against mealybugs, especially root mealies. For those the only thing that really works is a systemic pesticide. If you can find one that actually works then that is the best preventative. Unfortunately though dealing with pests is just one of those things we have to accept, especially if you have a lot of plants. Good luck with yours and I hope they haven’t spread from your jade to any others. Thank you for watching and commenting 🌵☀️🌼🌸🌺🏜
@@Cactimania the more I think about it, the more afraid I get! Lyn posted a Bug Clear Ultra product that’s meant for vine weevils. I’ve ordered some and I’ll give it a go. I’ll also bake the media I’ve just potted everyone in and sterilize their pots and drainage trays. One by one, do a clean sweep. I don’t have that many but if it gets out of control in a few months, I don’t think they’ll recover as well over winter. The jade is about 3 feet tall, too. I’m hesitant to chop off its roots but the leaves are yellowing and dropping rapidly. It came to me as a gift and took three deliveries of shattered terracotta to finally get its new home. What a silly state of affairs 🤦🏻♀️
@@nataliemitchell5322 Yeah it can be upsetting when pests break out in the collection. Bug Clear works well against spider mites, which is the main pest I deal with regularly, people have said it is effective against mealies, too. Keep the jade away from your other plants for the time being until it recovers 🌵☀️🌺🌼🌸🏜
Did you notice small fruit flies when you had the root mealybugs? I have some at my collection, and they are making me paranoid, because male mealybugs can fly :x and i didn't find any normal mealybugs.. Best regards :)!
Not fruit flies but I did have an outbreak of root mealybug in one pot a few years ago and I only noticed I had them as the winged males were sitting underneath the pot. The only good thing is the males don’t have mouths so can’t feed on the plants. Thanks for watching and commenting 🌵☀️🌼🌺🏜
@@Cactimania So i found the reason to the small flies i had, i was repotting some of my Gymnos, and they had root mealybugs :x I looked in the whole tray and there was root mealys in 15 plants out of 36... I tried to treat all 36 plants now, i did 1 minute soak in iso, dipped in 50c hot water, and they are now soaking overnight in nikotin tea with castile soap and some iso. Can i do anything else? it was not heavy infested but i found them crawling in all 15 :x do you think it will help and do you think plants can soak for so long in heavy nikotin ? Sorry for all the questions i am just in deep trouble and need some advice, really depressing with so many plants i cant cut all roots :(.. Thx Regards Nick
@@zhaezz84 Really sorry to hear that, but I know the feeling when you get a bad infestation of mealies. Most important thing is to isolate any of the infected plants away from the others you have until you’ve got rid of them all. I can’t really suggest anything else apart from a systemic. Might be worth taking the risk and ordering some of the Starkle G if you can? 🌵☀️🌺🌼🏜
@@Cactimania Thank you brother. And yes i just ordered it from Precious cacti in Thailand. Have a slim hope it will get trough. But i have to try. Now i need to go and remove all the nasty tobacco from my beautiful Gymnos. Root mealys must have come from one of Germanys biggest cacti nurseries, really sadge :x

Do you still use this mix?
No I use a different mix now with coco coir, pumice, kyodama and zeolite. I’ll be doing an updated soil mix video soon. Thanks for watching and commenting 🌵☀️🌼🌺🌸🏜
