CLASSIC MOVIE REVIEW: Bette Davis and Errol Flynn star in THE PRIVATE LIVES OF ELIZABETH AND ESSEX (1939) directed by Michael Curtiz. Towards the end of her reign and well into her sixties, England's greatest monarch, Elizabeth R, finds herself drawn to Lord Essex, a handsome young knight in her court, with a proud nature and political aspirations of his own. He woos and wins her, but is his love based on true affection or a desire for power and the need to over throw her and take her thrown?
Bette didn't want Flynn for the role and fought him throughout the production. For his part, Flynn turns in a charming and deft performance as Essex, underplaying to his flamboyant co-star and the results are electric. Bette was in her late twenties when she attempted to play Elizabeth, and reticent about taking on the role. She commented on this to veteran actor Charles Laughton, who'd won an Oscar playing Henry the Eighth. Laughton's advice stayed with Davis for a lifetime. "My Dear, never stop daring to hang yourself."

Errol Flynn is underrated as an actor, possibly due to his ridiculous charm and charisma.
Emma, as a fellow Flynn fan, let me recommend, 'Footsteps in the Dark.' He plays a dashing detective early on in his career. Unfortunately, there was already a Cary Grant. Flynn was just as good an actor, at least as dashing, and way more handsome IMO.
emma duncan If you want to see how really good Errol Flynn was I suggest you have a look at 'Uncertain Glory.' His production company produced it and it is 'the real Flynn.'
@@albertmorris6162 Have a look at 'Uncertain Glory' Albert. Flynn's own production company produced it. It is the story of a man who struggles with contradicting tendencies in his make-up. Like Flynn was.
@@ThePiratemachine FAscinating. Thank you so much!
Errol was perfect for Essex. He encapsulated the real man perfectly. The latest Mary Queen of Scots could have done with some costume hints and set design help from this film!
That brilliant scene where she breaks all the mirrors because they are mocking her age. She played Elizabeth again later, Joan Collins is the Female servant, again a scene where she blows out the candles in her bedroom
Steve, I know I am late to the party, but I'm glad you gave Errol credit for his acting. My favorite performance of Errol's (among so many) is "Gentleman Jim" from 1942. Thanks.
I love him in ' They Died With Their Boots On" and " Santa Fe Trail". Both make me cry.
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ .. I always preferred Edge Of Darkness (1943). Exciting with an all star cast.
Steve, fabulous work as always but there's a few errors of fact. First of all Bette Davis was 31 when she made "Elizabeth and Essex", not 28. Secondly, it was Michael Curtiz who objected to Bette's elaborate wardrobe on the grounds that it would be harder to photograph.
Thanks 😘 for this wonderful 👍 review. We watched the movie 🎥 yesterday and loved it
It's really magnificent and Warner's giving their biggest money maker the full star treatment. Opulent and gorgeous. Both stars, every actor in fact, are at the top of their game. Such as magnificent film. I always felt it was too bad that it competed with "Dark Victory" at the Oscars that year. It should have netted her yet another nomination at the very least. The role utilized all of her distinctive gifts to the maximum. Until Glenda Jackson came on the scne in the early '70's, this was always my favorite interpretation of Elizabeth R and it still ranks high. Thanks for watching! Steve
Steve, I think this is your best review to date! Keep 'em coming, I look forward to each new video. Thanks!
You're so welcome!
He does a great Bette Davis voice imitation! Now, if he just DRESSED like a Queen...
I do. I've had complaints from both sides.
Steve, excellent review informative and entertaining as always! You are turning into a UA-cam star!
Well, as long as I am with you. That's what matters!
I love this film.
Love the out take at the end - you are also a pill Steve - you know that i can't wait each week to see what you will say.
Errol TRIED to be nice. He walked up to Bette and said, 'Hi, I'm Errol Flynn.' . . . 'Of coarse, ya are, Errol, of course ya are.'
And nobody was more Errol Flynn than Errol Flynn. He was terrific in this and she was lucky to have him. She didn't often get to play opposite someone who had real star charisma and sex appeal . Errol had it in spades and was a sensational actor. He made the swashbucklers look too easy, so everyone took him for granted. I think he was much better suited than Olivier would have been. Bette was jealous. Have a great weekend, Mr Morris! Best; Steve
@@stevenhayes4063 Thank you so much, Steve. Likewise. Sending love to you guys.
@@stevenhayes4063You know - Patrick Knowles said Errol in 1941 said he thought 'picture making is ridiculous'. He wanted to leave Hollywood. His father was a Professor of Marine Biology. Maybe Errol wanted to play the parts in real life. He certainly wanted to be a recognized writer. That he said was his first love. Like it was Jean Harlow's.
Great stuff as always Steve.
warner brothers classic
They could do away with the young guy MC at the beginning.
Steve's advisor?
Larry Olivier was not the right person for this job at all!
I agree. Flynn was more the dashing rascal the role required.
Sad old Errol; such a stunner, but self destroyed by booze and fetish for underage girls. What ever stardom is, it never fixes a person.
Nope.
Rob Jack As Errol said himself. He said, 'I climbed to the top of the world and found nothing there.' 'He was intelligent,' a couple of people I knew who knew him said. I don't think there was anything sad about him. He had too much of a wry cynical sense of humor to be seen as sad.
@@ThePiratemachine To turn from being THAT handsome, beautiful, athlete into booze bloated child chaser is rather sad. Admittedly, he knew he was a persona, not an actor, and he had a really good time being famous. But definitely had his finger on the down button.
@rodlarocque Me too and the more I watch it the more I love those two together. Bette was wrong in her low estimation of Flynn as an actor. I think Errol lightened her up and made her sexy. And that incredible, heartbreaking Korngold love theme, get's me every time! I saw it again recently and cried like a baby at the finale when they say their good-byes. I have always though this film was vastly underrated. Thanks for watching!
Toward the end of her life, Bette Davis revised her opinion of Flynn's acting, admitting she had been wrong. You'd enjoy Viveca Lindfors' memoir Viveka Viveca, where she describes Flynn as a brilliant actor who didn't know it and paid no attention to his talent. She co-starred with him in Don Juan. I think he was robbed of an Oscar for Adventures of Robin Hood, one of my all time favorites.
lemorab1 agreed, he really was charming and fabulous and unbeatable in that film. It's such a rare thing, but it comes across so easily and breezily that Flynn made it seem like anyone could do it. Of course, only he could! His sort of actor is ALWAYS fobbed off in the award competitions and the 'serious' film actor heaped with the accolades as usual. Well, I think we all know which is more difficult to pull off don't we? Flynn even did some more serious work later on in his career, and I have to say he did those very well too!
Love the score!
@@lemorab1 He should have got The Oscar for 'Uncertain Glory.'
@@3122tan Yes. His later films such as' Uncertain Glory' are better I think than his earlier ones except for The SeaHawk.' Maru Mara' has a great character part, a very moving last scene. 'The Big Boodle' is intriguing.
Truly one of Bette's greatest performances and also one of Errol Flynn's. He was so much better an actor than he's ever gotten credit for, and genuinely one of the most beautiful men ever on the screen.

This is the best portrayal of Elizabeth I I've ever seen.
I guess you have never seen Glenda Jackson in Elizabeth R.
emma duncan two fantastic portrayals
@@emmaduncan2991 Yes I have, Glenda is superb, in the film version and tv version. in fact her Mary Queen of Scots film version with Vanessa Redgrave knocks spots off the new Mary Queen of Scots too! :)

Oh, I'm soooo glad you'll have a new Bette to view! This is such a big and important picture. One of the things I most love about doing TOQ is turning people on to the treasure trove of classic films that are available! I wish I could be with you when you first see it! Also, this film has one of the MOST romantic scores EVER! Erich Wolfgang Korngold was simply a genius! Also, check out "Kings Row" , another sweeping score and great film!

LUV her in this movie, Flynn and Olivia are divine, too!
It was at a private screening with Robert Osborne when Bette said of Flynn..."Damn, he was good!"

Sizzlin' chemistry!
I think so too. Electric. Bette was way off base about Errol. He was perfection in this.
I want to see this just for the costumes. Who knows, I may actually begin to like Bette.
Dear Steve, the funny thing is that both Bette Davis and Errol Flynn are right - Elizabeth really did once hit Essex so hard he nearly drew his sword on her (but Bette could have faked the slap), and that Essex really was a very good looking chancer, at a time when the monarch had to be flattered and made love to if you were to survive. But it is also completely true that there was a deep emotional connection between them, and that she didn't want him to die. Errol Flynn wasn't only absolutely gorgeous, he was (as others have said) a far better actor than he was given credit for, and I also admire Bette enormously for shaving her head and making herself look as much like the real Elizabeth as she could - back then few leading actresses would have had the courage to do that, particularly when Olivia de Havilland at her prettiest was in the film alongside her. I have another reason for liking Errol Flynn, in that he hated the cruelty to the horses during the filming of "The Charge of the Light Brigade" (insanely not even set in the right country!), when 120 horses died. One of the reasons I have a problem with Westerns is worrying whether the horses are alright (sigh). Thank you very much for reviewing this film, because (unlike Bette) Errol Flynn is so overlooked now, and he shouldn't be. Best wishes, Alida
IDear Alida; f you like Errol, check out another rTOQ eview I did of one of his war pictures called "Northern Pursuit" w/ Helmut Dantine and Julie Bishop. Set in the snowy Canadian Wilds, it's alotta' hokum , but also such fun! Danitne was such a handsome/sinister Nazi. He, Veidt and Kurt Kruegar were my favorites. I also like a suspense film Flynn did with Barbara Stanwyck called : " Cry Wolf". I have had an obession with "Elizabeth R" ever since Glenda Jackson's "Elizebeth R" series in the early '70's. GOD, I miss her!!! . I think both she and Bette were the closet to how the monarch really was. I liked Cate Blanchett, but hated the direction of both those films as they messed with the history too much. Bette Was so brave and I wish she'd been nominated for "Elizabeth and Essex" and I like it much better than her later attempt in " The Virgin Queen", although I've always adored Richard Todd! I never come to London when I don't make a special trip to Westminster to pay my respects to Elizabeth R. Best; Steve
Your dvd of Kinsey is prominent.
I hope you get around to giving us your review.
I LOVE Laura Linney in it.
That's a hard one, although I love it and director Bill Condon. I'll put it on as a possibility.
Errol Flynn was perfect...she was lucky to have him. I bet BD was pissed he didn't make a pass at her.
Alfred Bonnabell There were rumors she was keen on him.
who is the guy at the beginning ? is he Johnny ?
Is it true, Betty hated Flynn during filming this movie??
She slapped him hard?!
Yes, accroding to several sources. She turned her huge ring around into the palm of her hand and hit him so hard his ears rang.
Thanks for the posting!

Didn't need to.

As to Technicolor, let's not forget The Anniversary! I understand what you mean about the "glory days" and I agree with you, but can you imagine what Mr. Skeffington would have looked like in Technicolor? Scarier than Baby Jane! I came to The Anniversary very late and flove her in it, her blue Bette Davis "Eye" lol. Anyway, just a small observation. PS- Elizabeth and Essex is MUCH better than The Virgin Queen although at one point she said she thought her latter performance was better.

Great acting is great acting whenever it happened. So glad you watch and appreciate her now!

Steve,,,,will you ever review "Where Love Has Gone"? , do you think?
PS: love all you do, thank you & all your crew of Merrrrry Men!
I just might. Two favorites Hayward and Davis...or visa versa!
Bette Davis and Olivia deHavilland were friends only because Olivia resolved to make it so. When they first crossed paths, Bette was watching Olivia play a scene, and was heard to ask, “What is she doing?”. The remark evidently got back to Olivia, who realized that she could either make a friend or foe of Bette. Olivia decided not to take offense, and made a concerted effort to make friends with Bette; things could have ended up very differently, though.
Smart move on Livie's part.
To bad her sister Joan and her were not that close
@Toyuki1
Of course, you're right,, but this was the only color one during the major years of her career,(1938-1950).
"The Virgin Queen" (1954) was shot in Cinemascope and Technicolor at Fox, but it was after a three year hiatus following the dreadful "Another Man's Poison" and it wasn't the hit the first one was.

Mr. Flynn was gorgeous and such a great actor.
I thiunk so too. Much greater than anyone has ever given him credit for. Thanks for watching! Steve
The great bel canto composer, Gaetano Donizetti beat both the play and the movie by a hundred years or so with "Roberto Deveraux" . Donizetti wrote several operas set in the British Isles. My father said it was because his ancestors came from Scot but I could find no collaboration. He, like I, was probably simply an anglophile.
Three of my favorites from the "Golden Age" . It's amazing that Miss de Haviland is still alive.
Now Steve, if you could do a cool, laid-back imitation of Errol as good as the others you do you'd have a field day!
Nobody "could do" Errol Flynn...I take that back... practically everybody did. Oh, well.
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ Subtle....Ha!
You said that this was Bette's only Technicolor film; I remember The Virgin Queen as being in color too--but not Technicolor?
She's great but still too "Bette D-esque" rhythm. I think Glenda Jackson as Elizabeth in 'Mary Queen of Scots' is the best (even better than Blanchet). Anyway, I have all three Queen E. performances on dvd. Am always popping in a Davis flick; will never grow tired of watching her in "BettAction" 💋🤤 - she and DeHavilland are in top form in 'In This Our Lives'💅 !
