I lived there from 1980-1990. I had moved from Yunan there. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Those were the best years of my family's life. I love how clean Jeddah was, and modern without the clutter of today. Look at the Corniche how pristine it was? beautiful beachfront area to watch the sunset, or play with the kids. The recent photos i've seen from Jeddah or videos don't impress me that much. Jeddah is losing its authentic character and trying to look too much like Dubai, with ever increasing skyscrapers and ridiculous malls. Remember...there can only be one Jeddah or Jidda the jewel of the Red Sea:))
Actually, the Corniche is much nicer - I also lived in Jeddah from early 1981-1990. The Corniche offers MUCH more for families and is lush with plantings, unlike the 1980s. I will say that the biggest unfortunate change today is the loss of the wide, grand boulevards with artwork everywhere. Today, the city is congested with choking traffic on very tight freeways. Overall, I think the city had more character when it wasn’t nearly so chaotic. I have personally watched its development as I have maintained an apartment there and now go there for 3 months each winter (I’m now retired).
Your words truly capture the essence of Jeddah during that golden era. Living there between 1980-1990 must have been a beautiful experience, especially coming from a place like Yunan. The memories of a clean, modern, and uncluttered Jeddah resonate deeply with those who lived through those times. The Corniche was indeed a gem-pristine, serene, and full of life, offering unforgettable sunsets and family moments. It’s understandable to feel nostalgic when comparing those simple, authentic days to the city’s current rapid transformation. While progress is inevitable, Jeddah’s true charm lies in its unique character, not in replicating other cities. Jeddah will always be the "Bride of the Red Sea," and no amount of change can take away the memories and magic of what it once was. Thank you for sharing such heartfelt reflections! 💐🫰🏻
@@x050000000096xx Well i would have liked to live there longer than what i did. Unfortunately 1990 things turned upside down for my family and i and my dad made in my humble opinion a hasty decision to leave ( due in part to the Gulf War). I was only 11 years old. One thing i will say about Jeddah is that... it was easy to make friends and friendships that last for life. Nowhere else did i see people get along so well, perhaps because finances was not an issue. Jeddah was the only place where an enemy could turn into a friend at least from my perspective. Always a birthday party, a social gathering that's what it was about. The word 'fun" had a true essence back then. Something that is sorely missing in today's world.

I don’t think so. The area on King Abdulaziz Street looks correct - the NCB is new. I think he’s right.
