I know this is a very very old video but I just came across it. I worked for Cameco in Thibodaux for two summers while going to LSU. The harvesters used back then sure looked a lot different. This was when they still BURNED the leaves off of the cane stalks. Cutter would cut the top off the stalk and then lay the full stalk across the rows. The entire field was set on fire (controlled burn sort of thing) and latter a forked front loader would scoop the stalks up and put them in a wagon. The wagon would drive to a hoist where it would lift the cane into a truck trailer to take it to the mill. The EPA put a stop to the field burning and so they had to go with something alot more complicated. (I know no one will read this but still nice to reminisce)

I have a few more newer videos of this and other Cameco equipment FYI. There's still a handful of farms West of here around Loreauville and St Martinville that harvest using the old wholestalk method. I have videos of that too. Thanks for watching!

I wonder if this is the same 2 row beast that was once owned by a farm that harvested sugarcane in south Avoyelles & north St. Landry parish. That beast once crashed through a bridge due to the weight so the farmer opted to go with 2 single row harvesters instead of the 2 row beast mainly due to transportation issues.

I've seen it down around Jeanerette when I've been down in New Iberia ... Do they still burn the fields off?

      Yes they do.

I thought they stopped burning the fields years back because of traffic accidents caused by the smoke drifting across roads, and especially during foggy days. This new harvester doesn't require burning fields because it chops the Cain up after defoliating it then into the chase trailers. With the old harvesters that left the Cain in tact you had to burn it to defoliate. I loved the smell of the burning Cain it was like a smoked syrup smell. I saw a man decapitated early one morning on highway 90 in the smoke and fog when he went under a large Cain trailer crossing the highway. It sheared off the roof of his car along with the upper part of his body.

I find it really interesting that there only seem to be two kinds of cane harvesters, either full stalk or chopper, and in both cases, while multiple companies seem to have made the machines, all of them appear virtually identical. The only difference is that most are one row and a few are two row. And they all look like they were designed in the 1950s, even the brand new modes JD is selling today. I guess it must be a small enough industry that there is no money in innovating and making a 4 or 8 row harvester. Or maybe JD has bought all the competition out of business, and so has no pressure to change anything.

I'm wondering the exact same thing. The largest sugercane operation in the world is over 2 million acres.... how you harvest all of that with new single row harvesters is beyond me.

My childhood was in Clewiston Fla, these cane harvesters were not there until after 1969. Cutting of cane was done by hand. I have heard that the harvesters were not around until the mid 1980's

Thanks, I don't work on the farm I just went shoot the video. I can tell you that our sugarcane harvest usually last from sometime in September to around New Years. The weather has been good so far this year so I'm betting a lot of the farmers will finish early. If the weathers holds that is..

diamonddog257. .. NOT QUITE. - JD went down to Cameco and told them they were going to build the same machine virtually in a factory next door. Then they were going to sell it at a LOSS under Cameco's price until they SOLD OUT to them, (JD), or went bankrupt due to lack of sales. So faced with that ultimatum Cameco sold out to JD.
