A much more interesting scene than a roadway. I enjoy watching your videos please keep them coming. Love that muddy dirt road to the right of this new scene.
looks brilliant richard mate....the dirty tunnel has made a huge difference to how that area now looks and definitely fits in so much better than the motorway did. im sure its going to look fantastic when you finish it. terry
Another Excellent video there, Your videos always inspire me & I like the way you do your tutorials, with a step by step approach & easy to follow guide on how to achieve the scene we are looking for.
Excellent start to the canal already Richard. I just wish that I had done this approach on the lake on my layout, it would have saved so much grief but this is how you learn I guess! Don't leave it too long for Part 2!………Graham
Its amazing how much this subsequently changed but is great to watch. Leeds has a lot of rivers and streams thats underground in and around the station area.
Really nice addition to the layout and some great progress already. Love that towpath, it adds a lot of character. Looking forward to watching this project progress :) - Sim
Excellent! Very inspirational, I was about to suggest the towpath through the tunnel but see that you've already done it. Great work and also very good quality video. Cheers Richard
I have to admit Richard that canal scene ties in better with the allotments looks so natural and the tunnel mouth is superb puts my canal scene to shame top job. Kev
percomotion Thanks Kev. It does sit well with the allotments. I'm going to put some junk on the right thats been thrown by the people in the allotments. Perhaps an old wheelbarrow of something.
I've always been very inspired by your modeling, and I have to tell you that after watching your recent layout update, I headed down to my layout and ripped up a section to redo... Your work here is excellent as usual. I love watching each new installment, and I'm anticipating part two of this video :)
Hi.Not been on your Everard Junction Long, but Subscribed to it because the Excellent Work Carried out throughout the whole Layout. With your Patients Whilst Working also Explaining as you go along is Fantastic. Really Enjoyable with your Updates etc. Plenty of Projects to take in. Looking Forward for the Canal Scene P2,P1 Fantastic,How you Changed from a Motorway to a Canal,Realy Afective Indeed. Looking Forward with your Future Tutorials. Regards Lee
Great video as always and have avoided the use of realistic water on my canal and pond scene for the same reasons. PVA layered and poured have been used and have worked well on my layout. Goodluck to you. Susannah
You have a very nice layout and I've enjoyed watching your videos. I think this is a much more balanced look versus the highway. It fits the scenery better.
Great looking scene, great layout and I'm really looking forward to part two to see how the water goes, by the way you need an angler on the towpath. ;)
It's looking great! I do the same thing with my tunnels and scenes that people are not going to see ( I detail the insides ). I like it a lot! you are a great modeler with awesome ideas. Cheers RT
Just a couple of suggestions, you could add a canal boat coming out of/going into the tunnel to hide the back of the tunnel. You could also add some small pieces of rubbish that have been flown in from the towpath. Other than that, a great scene on the railway. Look forward to Part 2.
Great video as always. Just thought id say, if you pour some realistic water onto a baking tray and leave it to dry up and add them to the cannal behind the cannal boats it will make it look like the ripples. Keep up the good work cant wait for part 2. jack muxlow
Excellent work, its shaping up nicely. Will be interesting to see how you get on with the realistic water. I see the Class 101 in be blue/gray has arrived in stock as of yesterday.... Its a fantastic model, picked up the BR blue version a few weeks back...
kevintregunna Thanks Kevin, I always thought the motorway cut the two boards in two and never really liked the effect. Looking down the track it now looks much better.
Been watching your videos for quite a while now and am continually impressed with your progress and projects. You have a knack for creating believable and realistic scenes. While we don't have much in common with regards to our modelling interests as I am an N scaler working with North American themes, I have a keen interest in British railroads and layouts, and yours is truly one of the best. Keep up the excellent work and I am looking forward to what you bring us next. Best regards from Canada, Frank.
How do you do the brick weathering? Do you give it a base of mortar coloured paint and then dry brush sponge etc with the brick colour? What is the shade of brick you use?, it looks just right. Would like to replicate that colour as I do some practicing on my plasticard embossed sheets in prep for walling at the TMD in the future. If you could take me through how you did and what paints you used then I would appreciate that. Cheers Dave
DaveClass47 Ahh, you wish to know my secret brick painting formula? Took me a while to get it right. Use equal parts red, orange, brown and then two parts white (tamiya acrylic). That should get a reasonable red/orange brick colour. Add more brown or black to age the bricks if you want. Once painted you can add washes of brown, black and beige to weather the bricks further.
EverardJunction You've revealed your secret! lol. Thanks for that, I have never done brick work painting and am using plasticard for the retaining walls on other parts of the layout. I used the Sclaescenes for the station but want to try another material for the tmd retaining walls. Life's all about variety after all!! lol I will buy some embossed material and have a potter around over the spring/summer to hone my skills, but I do like the shade of brick you've got going on! Cheers.
Richard Looking brilliant Just a thought although it may be too late I have a similar scene and what looked great for mine was to place a piece of mirror at the far end inside the tunnel. If placed at the correct angle you get a 'deeper view' looking into the tunnel that seems to show the canal / river continuing much further
Richard looks good so far, was going to suggest a shopping trolley, but someone's beat me to it, my only suggestion is to use the the woodland scenics textured water, (it's thicker) along the edges and in the corners to give you a good seal before you add the realistic water. You will find the realistic water will find its own level and the smallest of holes you don't even notice and start to leak out, also use thin coats other wise it can blister and bubble up Andy
Andy Hudson Thanks Andy. I made a shopping trolley last night to throw in the canal. I've also got a bike tha might find its way in there. I've sealed everything will filler so far. Fingers crossed it doesn't leak!
The only thing I would mention is that most of the tunnels in Birmingham have a small walkway that goes through the tunnel itself, whereas yours currently doesn't. I might be wrong though, I've just walked along a lot of the canals here in Birmingham
Not all of them do. When narrow boats were pulled by horses, the kids living on the boats would use their feet to move the boat through the tunnels. Some have steps up to the bridge.
The trouble with roads and light traffic they always (in my opinion) look wrong unless some vehicles are moving, mind you a road scene with a traffic jam and freely flowing trains is like a benefit of travelling by rail advert. I was wondering about the embankment of the back scene too, the canal certainly gives you what you want above and below the railway line level, and the wider bank to the left, as a piece of open space, something we often reluctantly model, always improves and de-clutters an area, it's looking good. :)
freightuk Thanks, the road always bothered me. It was like a big cut through the layout. Also as you say it looked odd without the traffic moving. I'm much happier with this scene.
Taking shape really well. I agree that the water scene definitely fits in to the overall look far better than the motorway did. Just to add......i have only just started subscribing but have been watching the "Everard Junction" videos from day dot as i did with a few previous vids you did on your last layout. Great work !!
Brilliant mate!! Thats gonna provide such an attractive scene, esp with a loco running over the top! Gud call to switch frm river to canal, and ur doin a cracking job on the project so far! Cnt wait to c water added :)
Really enjoyed this video. Have you considered a canal boat coming out of the tunnel, rather than one moored next to the towpath. Looking forward to video 2.
Looking good mate I love canals and will be hoping to be living on them in the future! You deffo need a backlog of canal boats on the tow path side and with it looking quite modern you could have a set of traffic lights and a load gauge above the tunnel entrance. Maybe stick a warm white LED right at the back of the tunnel to look like a boat coming through and the traffic light on red. Have a look at Dudley Tunnel on Google images it's a lot like yours, minus the tow path and no lights though.
It is going to good. Nice work so far. I was about to suggest that you bring the black down to the bottom of the water and then I noticed you did later in the video. Looking forward to the next one. Rob
Looks great exactly what I want to achieve. But please refer to the footpath by its proper name towpath and depending on size of tunnel may continue through it.
I didn't know if you needed to like add it before u added the water so it looked probably submerged in the water or so u could do a wash behind it in the water etc I sure it will look great however you do it :)
Looks really nice. Love the idea of putting a tunnelled canal there... Also have a small question. I'm planning to create a canal scene on a diorama I'm planning for a display case, but am failing to find scale drawings of old narrow boats (as they were seen prior to WWII, as the era I'm depicting is 1942-1944 GWR... Would you have any idea where I would be able to find that (web, book ? ? ? ) Thanks in advance, Eric.
Eric Sainte Hi Eric. My knowledge of narrow boats is very limited I'm afraid. What I can say is that many would have been of wooden construction and steam driven in the 30s and 40s. Steel boats started to appear under grand union ownership in the 1930s. As for dimensions they varied a lot depending on the type of boat, builder and route they were designed to take. Your best bet is probably the web, some sites should have some good history on the earlier boats.
EverardJunction just reading comments thy were iron boats as well as wood with old gardener and Lister desel or oil engines as thy wer e called so you had steam like fellows Morten and persevered boat President lots of good clips on u tube to give you ideas on moter there are some good kits for 1.76 scale narrow boats available as well lock gear and the rest is up to your imagination also Kennet and Avon cannal and grand union were passed by gwr lines that were active during the war with women being assigned like the land girls to boats for war efort
***** Its on hold at the moment while I work on the canal and suburb areas. It will be easily damaged if it was fully detailed as i have to keep reaching over to do other stuff behind it.
you could put some tracks along side the canal as the cross city line in Birmingham runs along side the Worcestershire and Birmingham canal at parts heading towards new st and it was opened in the 80's
Love the videos as always. Given me some ideas for my river scene on my small layout. The canal really fits very well. Did you consider using the Dapol version of realistic water that you can get from Hattons?
Have to say this is looking great and works much better than the motorway - the whole thing 'flows' much better (pardon the pun) - as others have said I think you need to think about adding some elements of urban decay, as canals in built up areas were quite often neglected and tended to be crime and antisocial behaviour hotspots - graffiti would probably look quite good here, particularly around the bridge area, where street gangs would probably hangout! Anyway looking great, can't wait for part 2.
hi everard junction i have a small model railway set in network southeast and i was wondering how do you make your network southeast signs on your railway if you dont mind telling me feel free cheers alfie
Nice scene, I 'walked' a canal boat through the Dudley tunnel once, I suspect that's the inspiration for this? ( you all lie on your backs and push the boat through the tunnel by 'walking' on the walls, I kid you not!!! because they don't permit the use of engines inside - it took about three hours!!! ) It's money I know but a canal boat waiting to go inside - many are one way systems changing direction at a certain time wouldn't go amiss but I think it's a good choice of scene regardless.
Limestone Mills Thanks, the tunnel is indeed based on Dudley. I'll be adding a boat but not sure what to go for yet. I've made the tunnel larger than Dudley so its boat passable. Perhaps a cabin cruiser will be added instead.
hi not nit picking its tow path not walkway and canal bank not river but to lay man would look like that but far better job than road but im railway canal mad me self and do love all your tips and been following for ages keep good work up peter
Looks like a fun project Richard. It's amazing how we view are layouts and always find things to improve on. Nice job. Mike
KU4PC Thanks
A much more interesting scene than a roadway. I enjoy watching your videos please keep them coming. Love that muddy dirt road to the right of this new scene.
Glad you included the tow path into the tunnel. I was a bit worried that you were going to miss it for a while.
Hi Richard , the canal and tunnel area are looking fantastic they blend in great to your scene
Can't wait for part 2

Graeme Morrison Thanks Graeme, part 2 should go up this weekend.
looks brilliant richard mate....the dirty tunnel has made a huge difference to how that area now looks and definitely fits in so much better than the motorway did. im sure its going to look fantastic when you finish it.

Looks great and fits in lovley.
Great setup for sure! I always wanted to make some huge ongoing project like that. Very cool.
Its amazing how much this subsequently changed but is great to watch. Leeds has a lot of rivers and streams thats underground in and around the station area.
Another great 'how to' vid, Richard. Liking the progress. Keep 'em coming!
Looked great as it is already :D
Can't wait for the second part :)
That looks awesome far better than the motorway it blends in very nicely
Really nice addition to the layout and some great progress already. Love that towpath, it adds a lot of character. Looking forward to watching this project progress :) - Sim
Superb work mate, liking the whole scene. I really like the towpath going into the tunnel. Cheers, Jack
nice idea with the canal, like the walk way next to it.
Great video, looking forward to seeing how it comes along!
Very, very nice project. It does look a lot better than the road did.
Great start, looking brilliant already and cant wait to see the finished product :D
Great project. Yes we have many canal scenes here in Birmingham, some nice some not so nice.
Excellent! Very inspirational, I was about to suggest the towpath through the tunnel but see that you've already done it. Great work and also very good quality video. Cheers Richard

You have a very nice layout and I've enjoyed watching your videos. I think this is a much more balanced look versus the highway. It fits the scenery better.

nice change of scenery mate looking good to . lol i like the idea of the shopping trolley or old bike it to that a few people have said...... Glen

oorail.com My 101 arrives today. I'll do a review sometime next week.
I think it would be really cool if you added a racing crew shell with some rowers and all. We had a regatta once in a canal a lot like that.
Hi Richard nice bit of work on the tunnel mouth, looks better that scene than the motorway ,will tie in well cheers Kevin
kevintregunna Thanks Kevin, I always thought the motorway cut the two boards in two and never really liked the effect. Looking down the track it now looks much better.

Nice work EJ. Like the way you tackle everything without fear!! Not my period or layout style but lots to like here. Keep up the posts. :-)
Looking great. Keep up the good work. Are you going to have some canal boats?
I would like to see a flotilla of ducks and maybe a couple of swans guarding the towpath.....great job so far !
scooby2142 That would look good. I can see a group of angry hissing geese on the tow path already!

This is looking great so far. I'm still hoping for a fisherman on the towpath, or some ducks. ;)
ListerDavid Fisherman are on the list. I'm going to focus on some more anti-social activities first. Dumped bikes, shopping trolleys and graffiti.
Brilliant mate!! Thats gonna provide such an attractive scene, esp with a loco running over the top! Gud call to switch frm river to canal, and ur doin a cracking job on the project so far! Cnt wait to c water added :)
Matthew Snowden Thanks, the water will be done over the weekend. Fingers crossed it goes well!
Im sure it wil!!
Really enjoyed this video. Have you considered a canal boat coming out of the tunnel, rather than one moored next to the towpath. Looking forward to video 2.
Barry Clayton There will be a boat of some sort on the scene. It will be one of the last jobs I do.
Looking good mate I love canals and will be hoping to be living on them in the future! Have a look at Dudley Tunnel on Google images it's a lot like yours, minus the tow path and no lights though.
MickMaan The model is roughly based on Dudley tunnel. The lighting is a good idea, i'll add it to the list.
EverardJunction Thought so :) Can't wait to see it finished, it already fits in a lot nicer than the motorway.
Nice work again. Do you think a mirror angled slightly downwards at the back of the tunnel would give the illusion of the other side?
I see the transport hub already made this suggestion. Great minds think alike ;-)
It is going to good. Nice work so far. I was about to suggest that you bring the black down to the bottom of the water and then I noticed you did later in the video. Looking forward to the next one. Rob
Rob McCrain Thanks Rob
Looks great exactly what I want to achieve. But please refer to the footpath by its proper name towpath and depending on size of tunnel may continue through it.
You could add a mirror to the back of the tunnel to create the illusion of a longer tunnel with another portal
You NEED shopping trolley in the canel
Or an old bike frame. Lol
Damn beaten to it lol
Maybe A Crashed Car Or A Rotting Wagon?
A shopping trolly being pulled out by people with grapling hooks?
Danger Geezer The shopping trolley will be a key feature. I've made one and also have a bike to throw in there.
Love the new scene can't wait to see the water in part 2! Will there be a canal boat on the canal? Exciting
MrTimmsy1986 I will add a boat. That will be one of the finishing touches I do at the end.
I didn't know if you needed to like add it before u added the water so it looked probably submerged in the water or so u could do a wash behind it in the water etc I sure it will look great however you do it :)
Where do you get the plastic for the wall and tunnel opening?
Looks really nice. Love the idea of putting a tunnelled canal there...
Also have a small question. I'm planning to create a canal scene on a diorama I'm planning for a display case, but am failing to find scale drawings of old narrow boats (as they were seen prior to WWII, as the era I'm depicting is 1942-1944 GWR...
Would you have any idea where I would be able to find that (web, book ? ? ? )
Thanks in advance,
Eric.

Steel boats started to appear under grand union ownership in the 1930s. As for dimensions they varied a lot depending on the type of boat, builder and route they were designed to take. EverardJunction just reading comments thy were iron boats as well as wood with old gardener and Lister desel or oil engines as thy wer e called

on moter there are some good kits for 1.76 scale narrow boats available as well lock gear and the rest is up to your imagination also Kennet and Avon cannal and grand union were passed by gwr lines that were active during the war with women being assigned like the land girls to boats for war efort
I enjoyed that off now into the loft to work on my railway far behind yours only just started really
looking forward to part 2...something that keeps interesting me is you scrap yard, what is happening with that? (i know it is a little off topic!)
***** Its on hold at the moment while I work on the canal and suburb areas. It will be easily damaged if it was fully detailed as i have to keep reaching over to do other stuff behind it.

tjf4375 Thanks, I've got plenty of ideas for part 2. I've got a shopping trolley and a bike to dump in there so far.
Ha ha, awesome! Looking forward to Part 2 :)
hi everard junction i have a small model railway set in network southeast and i was wondering how do you make your network southeast signs on your railway if you dont mind telling me feel free
cheers alfie
I draw them up in MS paint and print them out.
Ah, but you haven't glued the platform bits down so it's something you may have been planning already!
Nice scene, I 'walked' a canal boat through the Dudley tunnel once, I suspect that's the inspiration for this? Fab!
Maybe add a brick border on the other side to make it look like thats the same thing on that side. Or a fence.
You could have a gravel path coming down the hill from the rail yard
Canal's a good choice man. You could probably put some skin'eads on the tow path
You HAVE added a walkway...teaches me to comment mid vid!
hi not nit picking its tow path not walkway and canal bank not river but to lay man would look like that but far better job than road but im railway canal mad me self and do love all your tips and been following for ages keep good work up
peter
