Anything over 5mph is good speed in my opinion, common sense has to come into play at some point. You are right, excessive speed tears up and is just not worth the time one might save. I think one does a better job cutting with a little less speed, the cutter isn't bouncing so much and is down cutting hay where it is supposed to be.

Looks good! I could hear you cutting last couple days. What's cake worth now? We haven't fed any in about 15 years.

      About $300/ton.
We don't buy any lick tubs or other supplements, so we feed a little cake through the winter and spring into calving to supplement the hay. Usually figure about one bale per cow per winter, but that depends on the winter. Was able to get up about a hundred and twenty last night of second cutting, but sounds like rain in the forecast tonight, so not sure how that will go

@@OldGlory1776 i see some new bales on that field. we finally finished on 12 mile. weather really slowed the process over there! now its on to my place, then to clear fork over by the twin buttes, then maybe some on l.o. creek then maybe some second. I'm getting weary of putting up hay, but you have to appreciate it. should get a good stock pile built up anyway! take care and hope you get that second rolled up in good shape.

@@johnowen6507 yes it's getting very tiring, Machinery is starting to have some breakdowns too. but as long as we can keep making Bales I think it's probably in our best interest in the long run. Done with the main Fields just trying to get this second put up. Which is really odd for us. Have covered about 150 acres of second cutting now, hoping to get another 200 Acres up, but the weather the next week does not look good for haying at all. May be the end, they're talking about a cold September.
