  • Did you know that lightning causes more deaths and injuries in the U.S. than either hurricanes or tornadoes? And many times, lighting strikes with apparently no warning; sometimes with nothing but blue sky overhead. And while that may sound rare, experts say it's not uncommon for lightning to travel far from its originating cloud. Lightning can actually strike as much as 25 miles from where it originated. Scientists refer to this as a "bolt from the blue."
To learn more about this weather phenomena and what you can do to stay safe, tune in to WeatherBug Meteorologist Aaron Shafer as he investigates "Bolt From the Blue" in this month's Classroom Connections video.

Researchers have found out since that these types of lightning are in fact negative strokes. The leader extensions horizontally are predominantly negative from within the storm and encounter screening layers which deflect the leader onward until it finds an opposing layer where it can move downward. That does not mean that they are not positive, but research has shown that they are in fact mostly negative. :)

I have recently come across a few studies which describe these strikes as negative, and to me it was mind-blowing given how the media seems to absolutely take for granted that these are positive strikes. That said, if you have any links to studies describing BFB strikes in detail then I'd love to have a look. Thanks!

i had to look this up because me and my wife were out looking at this crazy weather at night. Real windy and raining yet we could see the moon and stars and out of nowhere a bolt of lighting above our home flashed. Went right infront of the moon. We must be 10 miles from a storm. As a matter of fact I walked around the property just to see where the storm was. Nothing. Baffling.
