Is see that .37 acre building lot in Swamp rd only costs 78,500 usd. That is in fact nothing as compared to what we have to give namely 6 times more. We don)t have much building ground.

I had met a guy with a dome home. It was a honey comb style made of 6 sided panels small enough that him and his brother could lift them and bolt them together. The whole inside was open so it was a giant shell before he build walls on the inside. The outside was shingled like a roof so it was very energy efficient.
when you say honey comb style are you referring to like the framing of the dome or like multiple domes connected together...or.....?
Dome homes are not what appeals to me aesthetically… but… living in Florida they are a fantastic option for several reasons. Thermal and as you mentioned: Hurricanes 🌀. The reason they are such a safe hurricane structure is they are rounded… no corners (eaves) for the wind to get underneath and create uplift. The wind simply goes around the structure. They’re quite an interesting option for Floridians and there are several in my county.
Dome home communties for seniors, foam domes are cheap to build and you can heat them with a candle

Great video, the dome homes look like the best option, especially with crazy weather being our new reality.
One thing about tiny homes that the elderly would find problematic is stairs! A lot of these tiny homes have ladders or stairs to the bedroom. It’s fine when you’re younger or if you’re not handicapped. But for older folks like me, ramblers are best!
Re elderly, also need clearance for walkers, wheelchairs, proper height toilets after hip or knee replacements.

That’s great about the new outgassing rules. People with asthma can have difficulty with formaldehyde, glues, carpet backings, and the plastic panels that used to be put in manufactured homes. Nowadays, you see Sheetrock panels in the manufactured homes instead of the plastic panels.
My friend added onto a double-trailer a foam and plaster 2-story dome bedroom/bath with one of the coolest windows I've ever seen - it fills up with little pellets to create privacy. He's nwo building a barn out of the same materials and has 3+ tiny homes, a log cabin, a regular house, and a huge workshop on site. I wish I could move there but wasn't meant to be.

I love the look of the Dome home, and the strength of it. Hopefully I'll be able to get some land in Texas and have a few of those built.
Please understand when you have this dream. You must have septic in almost all counties. You have to drill for wells. You have to run electricity. We built a log home and just the foundation amd well and septic cost us over $40,000 and the land was gifted to us. So it’s a much harder process than you amy understand

In Florida, with the hurricanes, a concrete dome home would be GREAT. Safety is priority, and a dome with hurricane windows would be so safe.
My first house I bought in Pennsylvania was a resale manufactured home from the original owner & it was built in a factory & between the main floor & the basement, it was about close to 3000 ft. plus it had a two-tier deck with a swimming pool on 2 acres of land & even though most people talk bad about a manufactured homes, they are so much more durable because they’re not built like stick homes that have to deal with the elements of the weather where the lumber is usually left outside at the build site.
A manufactured home is built in a factory & in my opinion is well constructed & unless I told somebody that came to my house that it was manufactured in a factory, they would never have known but I did have a little trouble in the beginning trying to get a mortgage but when a major bank sent the appraiser, they saw how well-built and solid it was. Also in my new neighborhood there were a few developer lots (similar to a car lots) which had so many different manufactured homes to choose from - some were 2 story homes with 5 bedrooms and en suite bathrooms, it was just endless of what they could build in a factory plus the plans or the set up of how you wanted the rooms in your manufactured home are more flexible to change then it would be with a stick built home.
I am living back in a stick built home but just wanted to give my personal experience about a manufactured home built in a factory as opposed to on site.
One last thing, when I went to sell my manufactured home (that was permanently on my property because as I said I had a full dug out, below ground basement), I did make a profit selling my house so it’s not always something that depreciates once it leaves the lot, like a car does. JMO 🤗
I hope that the 3D and dome home technologies will merge together. I think that this will be the next level of the house building. Can you please ask the 3D house building companies about dome home building and tell us in one of your next videos?

Well. It's on its way. Every year design cost etc is becoming more affordable more beautiful etc.
Dome homes are built so easily that 3D printing would complicate it.
Thanks, girl... the variety of info you provide is truly awesome. I remember as a kid some here in Hawaii used Quonset huts to live in. I imagine that vast improvements to materials and construction have been made over the years making them affordable options today. You could even divide the large huts into individual units making it even more accomodating. Perhaps even a solution for the homeless if govt can support such an idea.

Yeah domes are way more energy efficient and Stronger especially If it’s made out of concrete Don’t have to worry about the roof or Any External Maintenance Wind resistant earthquake resistant Fire, and Termites etc

You could add hobbit houses and or earthships to this list as well, if given land suitable for them. Keeping in mind that it's not off-the-shelf technology and requires a more intricate design...
I live in a manufactured home in Virginia. We are on just under 3 acres. We found the land and everything was rolled into one purchase. Until this home I have always lived in a traditionally built house. We had some issues with the county with the permits, but we moved in right before the pandemic, and it has been smooth sailing since then. I have had no problems with the quality. There are a few things that we want to change, but nothing drastic. We replaced the storm door on the front of the house with a storm door that has a dog door in it, and that’s awesome! The dogs love it! I think container homes are very interesting as well as the monolithic dome homes.

Manufactured homes are fine. Just budget in a storm shelter. I don't take anybody's word when it comes to the safety of my family.

I had a 30x30 by 12 metal building built for $14,000 no foundation. A loft can be done as the center is 15’. I did notice a two story Home Depot home I saw in lays on arizona was 29k and is now 58k. Things need to settle down and zoning needs to ease up so we can get building !!

Have you ever checked on storage sheds built into tiny homes/cabins. I spent many years in a one room log home with sleeping loft in the middle of no where, and i think it was the best time of my life.
@Kristina I also love the Monolithic Dome Homes. However, I also like two other styles of unique homes: Earthbag and A-Frame.
I believe one of the University of California campuses (prior to pandemic) was teaching a course on how to build Earthbag homes.

I think it's time more people go with these non-traditional styles built with better material and better shape. Too many people are too content with these bland houses that just aren't that great. Then it's like we got people developing tiny homes like boxabl that lack character.
Love your videos. thank You for a cross reference to the many options a person has. As for me I want to build affordable communities made of dime houses. DIY etc. There is a need and a way it can be done. I keep looking into different government agencies. Etc. It will happen. .

In my job, l visit about 10 houses a day and last week l asked to a modular and double wide independent technitian about their quality. He told me that they are stronger than other homes because they have to have special glue besides the nails all over, this is for transportation over 70 miles per hour at the interstates, the surfer a normal stress cracks but nothing extreme around the doors and That is part of his job for final adjustments. Their standards are higher than a normal build house.
Hey Kristina. I have been following you about tiny homes since you started. I have a brand new mobile home in a park 55 and older. If you are interested I can do a video to show people how gorgeous them can be. It’s all about the builder. Our home is tied down to handle 80 miles per hour winds. We have 4 “ of insulation. Double pane windows.
My home looks just like a bungalow with a front porch and concrete driveway and a huge shed. I am in a rent control city which is a big help. Also my owners are a group of lawyers that have four of these in So Cal and do very well and have no intentions of selling to big builder companies. Love your videos and still hoping to find that tiny home dream for retirement.
I used to be able to go in the homes and film them. They kicked me off the lots now. They don’t want me filming their homes. 🤷🏻♀️. I don’t understand why they wouldn’t want free advertising?

I text her yesterday amd said, well are you swimming in sales? Riverside and Corona was supposed to be the second Orange County, Ca. Never happened. Anyway she said “ no one is buying, no one has money, and hardly anyone is qualifying. “. You are so on point. As always you are the best teacher out there. And a lovely heart as well

@@TheMocao you are correct. it was a hit in the early 2000, but now it’s a mix of tons of homeless and owners. when they dismantled much of the homeless camps in santa ana etc, they bled out to us because we are still close enough to make it back to OC. i live in a gated community and homeless try to set up every single day outside our wall. thankfully Riverside Police won’t put up with it. I must add, these are not homeless who would accept help, it’s full on drug people and criminals. we have even caught them climbing over our brick walls and steeling mail from our boxes. a street nearby a 70;yr old lady was stabbed to death while walking her dog on a super nice street

Has the geodesic dome owner and builder in an accidental contractor affordability boils down to standardization. My dad wanted to build a dome we cannot even find a framer to frame the inside of it because the complexity I had to figure out how to do it. Costs are kept down by standardization this is why manufactured homes are less expensive things such as container home staying home to even small homes you really need to pay attention to what you're putting in and keep things simple and non-custom as possible if you're looking to save some money. My experience with the domes is that they have some really great upsides it's a really bad downsides biggest upside is that great for extreme weather biggest downside kind of bad if you have a lot of rain such as Florida. As an all concrete structure they are very difficult to Waterford in great care must be taken when doing the exterior concrete work. Due to the slipping roof there's also issues with losing quite a bit of space on your second or third floor but they're very energy efficient and very secure.
I have plans for a modular Geo-Dome Home, so not monolithic, but still structurally sound due to the geodesic triangles that curve into a half sphere. 3 to be exact, one will be the main living area, second a master suite, and third a garage :)

@@KristinaSmallhorn Besides the ground water threat, Louisiana has a humidity/ condensation threat. Snow houses work well in some places. It takes less than one day to build an igloo and the snow is dirt cheap.
Pioneers built their own houses. America has made affordable (low quality) houses illegal. Homeless don't live long; that is the idea --- cut world population.

Actually not. I responded above. Almost all counties and municipalities will not allow this type of building. As Kristina stated, you can but 10 acres in the middle of no where and you still have to abide by state, county rules and regs. As long as the government can take a chunk of all building and. land, it will be a long time before it happens. We were gifted 2 acres and our well, sewage and electricity cost us over $40,000
Depending on the area you can run into some issues. With that being said I know of a company that makes these homes for the elderly sets them up gets them rented out and then investors can buy the little neighborhood.

I am interested in Cob. Don't hear much about them these days. Straw bale homes were all the rage a while back but seem to have fallen off the radar.
They are hard to get approval with zoning. I’ll look into them more if I can find valuable information.
@@KristinaSmallhorn You can build them in Florida but must be careful of mold, but it can be done. Most counties in north-central Florida don't care what kind of home u build as long as it is built to code. Most also don't have a minimum size requirement either. Just build to code n they are satisfied.

Like think of it as a container without walls, so you just have the structural frame, which gives you plenty options on height, and width..
Then you can put these finished boxes down, and stack together as you wish..
Hello Kristina. Great video. One thing about concrete come homes. Many fail due to moisture problems. Also care must be maintained re the concrete mixture. Do a bad mixture job and mechanical failure is not uncommon. Repairs are very expensive due to the monolithic build. Boxabl sold a home to spacex at Boca chica tx. Lots of videos about this!!!!!!. Any luck with arched cabin?. I still say these kits are cost effective. Considering thy come in sizes 8x8 to 50x50 there is a size and price point for many applications.......homeless shelters. ......rentals......arbnb.....off grid. We Have an 84 mod home. We got in cheap and fixed it up, roof paint kitchen bathrooms double pane windows. We did it one thing at a time. We own it, no rent or home or mortgages We love our place. It was a wreck but had decent bones. And it was on a lot
The only thing I am not happy with is, it was built with 2x4s not 2x6s like a stick built. 1150 Sq ft. 3 bedrooms
You also didn't talk about cob (aka. mud brick, some with straw in them) houses, which can be very cheap, and even free (if you have the dirt and grass, and can do the brick-making and building yourself), the only possible costs would be the doors, windows, and the coating of the walls or individual bricks, as well as the foundation. To not need a conventional roof, you can have a domed roof or conical roof, and even a window on top, but you will likely need to have at least a tarp initially, and likely either a metal roof or some long-lasting waterproofing tarp with a cement roof, and have the outside painted with oil-based paint (which could be homemade oil paint, or flour paint, or whitewash, or milk paint, or a mix of more than one of those kinds of paint). I think some people will be able to build a cob house for $1000 to $2000, including some of the tools needed. Granted, that price might require more work done in a year or two, and the total cost raised to $2000-$4000, but reusing the tools for multiple homes could cut another $500 from the price, and having the cost split into a smaller initial investment and compensating later, could allow a lot of the people who have no savings or very little savings to afford the house. And, if you make an inner shell for the house, then an outer shell for the waterproofing, and then use cheap spray foam or aircrete (aerated concrete) in-between them, you could even have it a lot cheaper in terms of heating and cooling costs, in the long run. And you can start with a spring or early summer inner shell being the only shell, then add spray foam or aircrete on the exterior, then paint that directly or add another outside layer, and end up with a well insulated home by the beginning of the autumn or middle of the autumn at last, if you manage to get enough income.
I have looked into many of these homes. I think that is how I found you channel in the first place. 🤔
There are so may great options now days if the zoning people will get on board with this idea.
I especially like the dome homes but covering them with living earth instead of concrete. This can still be done in a way that insulates the home well while giving you extra space to grow things.
Correct and that will be a fight for decades.
For the dome home, you talk about monolithic, but your first image was a geodesic dome. Very different animals. I was very interested for a long time and learned a few things along the way.
1. Because most building materials are rectangular and 4x8 based, there tends to be a lot of waste. There was a leading proponent of geos in the 60’s and 70’s - literally wrote the book, that subsequently came out completely against geos in large part for that reason.
2. For monolithic construction, be careful of embedded energy. While it is wonderful at resisting temperature swings, if it heats up, like from the sunshine, it can be extremely difficult to cool. It is a huge thermal mass. Thermal mass in the right place is beneficial but can be equally detrimental in the wrong place.
For off gassing, the build show has some great videos on the topic and do some wonderful video collaborations.
We have a home with the ability to split the back into a separate lot and hoping to be able to build a strawbale/post&beam.
I do like the dome homes. That would probably be my second choice if I cannot build a hempcrete block house.

I actually grew up in an east Oregon town of 500, where everyone lived in the old style manufactured homes, and they weren't too bad. Maintenance wasn't too bad, and they lasted their owners for their entire lives.
I, however, an definitely trying to go monolithic.
Pretty much all you said about manufactured homes is true. Replaced both tub drains within months of owning a brand new one.
7:18 is clip of I-80 E in Fairfield, California which is the exit I take to get home. I definitely had to rewatch it few times to be sure.

The house affordability isn't usually the structure itself, it's usually the location's land value that's been hyper inflated.
Love container homes
as for 3d printed home, you can have a fall, but it's just easier for the printer to be on a totally flat piece of ground.
A monolithic dome home costs about the same per square foot as a custom stick built home in any particular area. So, if it costs $150,000 to build a 1,500 sq ft stick home in your target area it will cost about the same for a monolithic dome.
