I'm a Colorado native and I went to Casa Bonita for a friend's birthday in the late 80's. It was really fun, but the most memorable part for me was the wishing well
Honestly I can see where you're coming from, but I'd say meteor shower trilogy if I could pick any starting point for a fresh viewer. It doesn't just have a great story for the boys like this episode, it has 3, and 2 for the adults. And "I DESIRE.... MACARONI PICTURES AND POPCORN NECKLACES!!!!"
Same. Casa Bonita was my first South Park episode and I'm glad it was. My exposure to it was my dad getting into South Park first, finding this episode hilarious, him sharing it with me, and then me finding it hilarious, and then I got interested in exploring the show further.
Three points here, One. It never dawned on me until now that Cartman is so shortsighted, he never had a plan for what to do after Cassa Bonita with butters. He just didn’t think of it. Two. It’s sad that there’s still a decent chance that butters got grounded after he got found. Three. I like it at the end when everyone is standing around watching Cartman float in the water everyone looks mad except Kenny who just kind of stares like “yeah that looks like something he’d do.”
It’s wild to think that this show could have never had Butters in it and without him South Park just wouldn’t be South Park. Butters steals every scene he is in and it’s all thanks to their animation director.
He’s always been my favourite from the start although I went on to fall in love with many more since like Stan, Cartman, Craig, Timmay and Steven. I still watch it daily/weekly all these years later.
I went to Casa Bonita last week!!!!!! I cannot stress enough how correct it is to call it tbe Disneyland of Mexican restaurants. It's genuinely magical. I went with my parents and my brother (we're both 22) and none of us felt like it was just for kids. We even loved the puppet and magic shows. PLEASE GO IF YOU GET THE CHANCE!!!!!! I'm not even in the same state but I already wanna plan my next trip
it's magical. Was the food any good since they bought it? Matt and Trey said they wanted to improve the menu. It used to be AWFUL but that was kind of special part of the experience.
No dude. If they'd all decided "you go to Casa Bonita yourself, we need to look for Butters" he'd have probably enjoyed it more. See also: Cartmanland.
@ I don’t disagree but I don’t think it makes my point any less true. If he had just experienced it by himself while everyone else searched, we still would have seen Cartman rejecting genuine human emotion. Albeit in a less funny way
I went to Casa Bonita as part of a summer camp when I was a kid in Fort Collins. It’s every bit as awesome and magical as they make it out to be for kids. I went a few times with my family too before the episode was aired and they capture the energy of what that place does to a kid perfectly.
It's interesting the boys are worried about Butters' disappearance in this episode when just two seasons ago in "Butters' Very Own Episode" Butters was missing, presumed dead, and at the end when he came home Stan casually asked "Butters was missing?" unaware he was ever absent.
It never donned on me, why didn’t Cartman try to manipulate his mom into convince Sheila to invite him so that way him, Butters, Kyle, Stan and Kenny could all go to Casa Bonita (or better yet, Cartman could’ve asked his mom if they could go to Casa Bonita at the same time Kyle had his party there).
Good point. I'm guessing that perhaps Cartman wanted not only to get to go to Casa Bonita, but he also wanted to do it specifically through manipulating Kyle into letting him go despite initially not wanting to allow it. It's a way to get something he wants, while sticking it to Kyle in the process. I guess the thrill of manipulating Kyle is like the sprinkles on a cupcake that would make the Casa Bonita experience just a little nicer for Cartman, but idk, I'm just speculating.
I see it like this, Cartman wants to go to Casa Bonita - but his ego probably took a hit when Kyle didn't allow him to go. He wanted Kyle to tell him he can go so he can "win"
Casa Bonita has a Hitchcockian quality to it in part due the way it handles the tension between what Cartman wants and the things continually getting in his way, with the dark secret of what he did to Butters getting closer to being revealed.
I just realized that all my favorite episodes are Cartman and Butters episodes. I knew before that those are always great, but I didn't realize how many of them are just so much better than the rest.
10:57, It was nice of Eric to give Kyle a present despite not being invited, plus after Kyle got him Ants in the Pants instead of the red Mega Man, which led to Eric throwing a temper tantrum and ending his party.
Y’know whats funny; the ending of this episode reminds me of the ending of the anime “Death Note” where Light/cartmen are exposed and both their faces go from joy/sadistic glee to “oh shit im caught” in a second. And just like light, eric decides to make a run for it 🤣
Man, South Park is amazing, me and a friend I work with always talk about it a lot. cat orgy was the very first episode I watched. this was back when South Park used to air on the CW, I don’t know if anyone remembers that but I do.
I LOVE this episode, but honestly I think Make Love Not Warcraft takes the cake for best single episode. Or Imagination Land if you wanna talk about multiple episodes. I also love the Snooki want Smoosh Smoosh episode (Forgot the actual name), or the like Lesbian 300 Parody against the Persians 😂
I went to Casa Bonita several times as a kid. When this episode came out as an adult, my friend's reaction when I told him the depiction of Casa Bonita was literal and not exaggerated at all was hilarious.
14:56 Some people could see what they imagine VERY realisticly, like if they are imagining holding an apple it just like real life. Some people dont have it at all, some people have it weaker (I really like this topic)
I don't have it. No visual mind or memory whatsoever. It gets embarrassing sometimes if I walk past a relative i haven't seen for a while - I just don't have a saved image of them. Also, you should see how bad I am at drawing, if you saw my stickmen you'd think I was deliberately drawing them badly. Nope, that's my best effort.
At 5:30 I think the idea is to layout early on all the things Cartman wants to do at Casobonita so after beating it into your head, its funnier when you see him soeedrun through all of it in the order hes been planning out.
There is something with cartman losing things he loves and gaining shreds of humanity from it. Similar to the future episodes where older cartman had turned a new leaf as a jew after losing his friendship with the main cast, but then when they changed reality and got them the basketball game, he turned out to be a bum
I’ve been watching South Park for so long and I was definitely way too young to watch it when I first saw it. Love this episode though I have no clue how to even begin to decide what is my favorite South Park episode
20:09 - Bro, fat people are STRONG. And I mean really strong. I’d take the fatty over the shredded guy because the fatty is naturally powerful while the one who looks chiseled has nothing close to the fat dude’s raw power. I’ve worked with both types for over 25 years in warehouses and factories and construction sites. Everyone overlooks the strength of the fat guys. Women too.
i used to go drink beer at westfax brewing company for the Bills games because theyre a Bills Backer Bar. its the building and company immedaitely to the left of casa bonita when you show the real life photo. its weird to think its techincally right there and it brings back memories since i dont live in the area anymore
13:45 that's definitely annie, one of the girls from south park elementary. shes always shown in a brown shirt, while tweek is always shown in a green one.
My first South Park episode was “Miss Teacher Bangs a Boy”. Loved the episode; really made me think Ike was a savage (true), but also made me think Cartman was just a good dude (definitely not true).
I live like a block away from Casa Bonita. That place used to blow ass before they bought it. For a good like 10 years they had this gift shop that sat untouched and the food was crap. They definitely made it better.
Here’s the thing you’re 100% right this puts a lot of pressure on avowed but just like everything if they deliver an excellent product nobody cares about the context
I just couldn’t believe everything they said about casa Bonita was real. It’s like when I read a review about a car wash by house and they were talking about how they got lunch at the cafe there and about the barber and the masseuse and I just assumed they were trolling or on drugs until I went there and saw it for myself. 😂
I struggle to believe Cartman was being sincere when speaking to Kyle. This was just the next step in his journey to learning how to pretend to be good. First he thought it was a nice sweater, then hurting people that are mean to Kyle would be nice Kyle and finally pretending he is ok with not being invited to Casa Bonita.
Might be wrong but I think detective Yates actually appears in an earlier episode than hard rock. He’s actually first in little crime stoppers but just with a different hair color. Probably before they expected him to be a reoccurring character. Same voice office and everything besides hair and shirt.
I think this episode is really good because for once Kyle doesn't suck. He's actually written likable and not obnoxious in this episode because he's most of the time just the self-rightous version of Cartman. Because when it comes to actually moral characters in the show Butter, Kenny, Stan and Jimmy typically fit the bill better than Kyle.
I'm a Colorado native and I went to Casa Bonita for a friend's birthday in the late 80's. It was really fun, but the most memorable part for me was the wishing well
Same. I remember the first time I went to Casa Bonita. I’ll never forget seeing the gorilla man walking around and seeing the cliff jumpers
i went as a kid too, i remember the atmosphere and decor the most tbh, as well as the Sopaipillas
It's truly the most magical place ever wedged into a strip mall next to an orthodontist.
Did you ever go back now that Matt and Trey bought it? I heard it got entirely remodeled because the food sucked or something.
@gc8568 I haven't made it back, but I do plan on going at some point
The fact that this was my first episode makes this even better, I think it’s the best place to start if you never watched South Park
My first episode was butters bottom bitch. Kind of crazy I still watched more after that B story lol.
Bruh mine was 'big gay Als big gay boat ride'
Same. Casa Bonita was my first South Park episode and I'm glad it was. My exposure to it was my dad getting into South Park first, finding this episode hilarious, him sharing it with me, and then me finding it hilarious, and then I got interested in exploring the show further.

Three points here,
One.
Butters: I can’t survive an apocalypse, my parents will ground me!
I don’t think Cartman cared about the consequences to be honest
@@theastonvillaseal585 Cartmen doesn't care about anybody else.

Butters didn't have a speaking role until the middle of season 3. Before that, he was just a background character.
What about pip? He's kinda similar to butters
@@jettSki-123Pip is Butters if Butters was English and therefore gay and bad

Overrated tbh. Good sure, but it's all chock-factor.
@axelkjell2320 I'm not saying it's my favorite episode, but it is definitely the most infamous.
No one you said “this one”
@@hometown.5841 I don't know what this means...
@@axelkjell2320I really like it, because it was where I feel like cartman really hit his stride
I think Cartman didn’t like how being left out felt. I think we see Cartman decided to be unhinged instead of experiencing genuine human emotion

Everything changed once Butters invited Kyle to his last birthday party
The montage of Cartmen calling Kyle a Jew and the musical segment always makes me chuckle.
Definitely one of the greatest South Park episodes of all time. Loved the analysis, dude.

I don't know if this was intentional, but when Cartman jumps off the waterfall I think it was a reference to The Fugitive.

The best part of this episode is that Cartman could’ve just strongarmed his mother into going to Casa Bonita instead of kidnapping Butters.
