You two ladies did a fantastic job with this conversation!! The conversation was very open, upbeat, professional, and super informative for people of all ages. The African American population has historically been understudied in the health communities, so it is wonderful to see two beautiful black young ladies provide their prospective in real time. Thank you again! Fantastic job..

Awesome interview. My son was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes last year & he’s in his late 20’s. That’s still young & as a parent I worry about him too. He lives alone, so I always check on him concerning his well being. He doesn’t like to talk about it too long & seem to get agitated if I pry too much so I back off. I pray even more than before for him now. I love Shelomi’s attitude about it though. You can tell she’s taking care of herself & has a very healthy attitude about it now. I guess that comes with time. Thanks for sharing. Be well & I can’t wait to see her do her thing on the court next season! #SKOBUFFS!

So grateful for this! My family is in the DFW and my dad favors Sanders so much it's crazy. My 8yo bby girl is the T1D (dx @ 4). She's my firecracker soccer player that slay, slay, slays all day, lololol. I appreciate Shelomi sharing her story and positivity! It is so heartening for me as a parent. God bless!

Although I’ve never considered myself an athlete, my story is similar, but 53 years ago. On the track team, so the thirst, excessive peeing, and weight loss was attributed to that. It was when I peed 15 pounds in 6 hours that my mom made the appt. I don’t remember exactly, but my blood sugar was north of 1100. I was just shy of 16. From then on, it was glass syringes and peeing in a cup to test urine.

My husband, of 45 years, was diagnosed when we were in H.S. He played football and baseball, and went on to play baseball in college. I have admired him so much, for his overall attitude. Unless you know him personally, you would never know any of his personal struggles getting through college, medical school, internship & residency. He's had his challenges, to be sure. However, he has never been a fan of anyone treating him differently than others, thus, unless absolutely necessary, he's never really shared. That has been his decision, and I've respected that. I equally respect you two intelligent, beautiful, young women, for being so candid in sharing your journey w/diabetes. "Be unapologetically yourself." I LOVE THAT maturity! I sincerely send so much positive energy & blessings to you both!!!!🙏🏽🥰😉

Thanks for sharing! I have Type 1 diabetes. I was diagnosed when I was 24. I found out from a pre employment medical exam for a Fire Department.
I pushed forward and became a Paramedic with the Fire Department.
I'm 42 and I'm studying to be a Surgical Assistant on a Trauma Team.
    I don't use a pump. I use a insulin pen.
I swim, snowboard, surf and weight lift.
Stay hydrated with water. Drink protein shakes. Foods high in fiber will stabilize blood sugar. Chicken is great.
Sugar cravings happen. Just make sure to limit foods high in sugar. I drink diet soda. Pizza tho is my weakness!
Keep some candy on you because lows can be scary; weakness, excessive sweating are common symptoms.

Random feed, but I love it. Beautiful ladies. Glad they (she’s) brave enough to share. Parents this is why you have to instill healthy eating habits in your babies. It’s not the kids fault - we have to teach them. I know there has to be a cure for it, but this country is wicked and rather have you on meds for your entire life.

Type 1 diabetes is genetics. Type 2 is from unhealthy eating habits.

    • @timsteinert2342
      @timsteinert2342 8 місяців тому

There are no healthy eating habits that prevent or "cure" Type 1.
Type 1 is an autoimmune disease.
It is caused by a person's body confusing the Beta cells in the pancreas as a foreign body.
There is only ONE treatment substance for Type 1. Insulin.
For the rest of her (and my) life, synthetic insulin will be required.
A good diet and regular exercise helps control blood sugar, but it will never cure it.
      Ever.
That's why they talk about the reason that Type 1s don't disclose their disease: People being "judgy."

I feel Bossy on the family and for me it was friends and shipmates (I am retired Navy) people don’t understand what you go through. I have type 2 due to Cushing’s Disease. No one understands that you can only do what you can do because it’s internal. They treat you like you did this to yourself. Sad. I use those moments to educate people, but sometimes it doesn’t even matter….they will continue to choose ignorance.

There is no GOOD time to be diagnosed.
    I think 13 sucks, because it's a difficult time WITHOUT Type 1.
But it can be good for your ability to understand that you need to take care of it.
My BROTHER was diagnosed at 13. I was diagnosed 38 years after my brother (when I was 43).
It didn't even occur to me that I had Type 1. In retrospect, I feel like an idiot that I didn't connect it-- but I WAS in First Grade when he was diagnosed!

The host said she was 15 when she was diagnosed and then went to diabetes camp the following summer. Each time Shelomi shared an emotion or life challenge in managing her condition, the host acknowledged her response and then shared antidotes from her journey that were similar. The name of the show is Type 1 Diabetes. Not sure how much more detail you are looking for. ❤ These ladies did an amazing job!!! Awesome interview!! 🌟💎😇
