    The first break down on my Breville 920 was after 5800 Espresso shots. Two " O " rings on the steam boiler needed to be replaced. Cost of the repair was about $3 and I hour of my work. It was esy to fix it. Now steam valve is getting trouble but still workable.

    Please help!
    I'm wanting to upgrade but not sure how. I have a barista express. My upgrade is solely for the purpose of better tasting espresso (I also have milk drinks).
    With all the talk about the grinder being so important, I'm not sure if I should just get the bambino or bambino pro, and then spend more money on a grinder (looking at the Eureka specialita) or will I really benefit from going with a dual boiler too. Making back to back milk drinks is not a big issue. I generally make one or 2 lattes in the morning. And am wanting to get into more straight espresso and Americano style coffee.
    (Also thinking about getting a v60 but that might be another topic)

    Breville DB is actually best machine for real end users, contrary to retro style things from Lelit, Gaggia and such.
    Just disassembly all machines and you will understand it all, as you are comparing 21 century machine to machines from 1960s.
    On portafilters - it is no such thing like "standard 58mm" as locking ears on them are slightly different for different EU firms, some are angled even.
    For Breville it is all good - you can get steel portafilter with bigger ears and just file them down to proper size, all will work.
    On Ali bottomless portafilter with 2 cup basket is around $15-18 delivered if you search good.
    Grinders prices are real mess, as it is not hard to put motor, two metal flat burrs, fine microadjustment and do it for less than $150.
    Issue is that almost all grinders are either niche (sic!) small firms made, where they just need 200-300% margins to live, or they are pro grinders that become expensive exactly due to expensive motors and very sturdy construction (and it is still small volume product).

    If you were to buy a new espresso machine today, which would you choose for 2 lattes a day? I have the dual boiler and it's been great, but it's starting to have the typical leaking issues (and it's in for repair right now).

    Hi! Great video! I will miss the dual boiler in your video LOL but I’m very happy because that means that you channel is growing up. I’m thinking about to upgrade from my gaggia classic pro with PID to the BDB. • @LifestyleLab_

      What grinder are you currently using?
      The BDB will give you the POTENTIAL to make better espresso, but playing around with the pre-infusion settings, and because of it's superior temp stability, but you'll need to have the desire to play around with that. If you primarily drink just espresso / Americanos, the Dual Boiler would be a bit overkill, as you're paying a lot for the faster and simultaneous steaming.

    Hello- I have an Apartmento. At 7:50 you say "the temperature stability that an E61 does offer if used CORRECTLY" The lack of temperature stability is my biggest complaint of the Apartmento. I added the digital temperature gauge to the E61 per your other video but as you also describe the overheating problem (and I also have this problem) you said it can take up to 45 seconds of flowing water thru the head to get the temp down to 200 ish range. I end up having to refill the water tank every day. Can you please explain how to use the E61 Apartmento machine "CORRECTLY". THANKS FOR ALL YOU HARD WORK ON THESE MACHINES!!

    • @LifestyleLab_
      @LifestyleLab_  Рік тому

      Flushing is all I’m referring to when I say “correctly” once overheated water is cleared, it is very temp stable.
      With the probe you are using, keep in mind that it reads warmer than at the group by about 3-4 degrees. So don’t flush all the way until it reads 200, that will certainly waste a lot more water

  • @REMY.C.
    @REMY.C. 3 роки тому

    Very nice review before that beauty goes!
    Does the top shelf warm the cups (double V12 boilers inside 😂) or is it cold like the infuser?
    Is the tray level and wide enough for a Hario scale? Maybe a Acaia Lunar? (Isn't this model tray that can be cut to fit the Lunar?)
    When you say it's a 58 but not compatible with other 58 PF, at least is it compatible with any tamper or distribution tool labelled 58mm, what's the exact inside diameter?
    Thanks.

    • @LifestyleLab_
      @LifestyleLab_  3 роки тому +1

      The cup warmer works considerably better than the other purely thermocoil machines!
      The portafilter is still compatible with standard 58mm filter baskets, so the ID will depend on what basket you put in. But you can still use 58.4mm baskets and accessories without issue

    Coffee machine technician here: Great video, love it, and I agree with almost everything, but would love to add something. Don't descale your breville dual boilers/oracles. Have seen it ruin the steam boiler too many times. You may do the descale cycle but know there's a chance that your steam boiler goes, and the repair isn't cheap nor fun. Cleaning cycles, frequent water filter replacement, and using filtered water are all highly encouraged, along with an annual/biannual service, pressure and leak test.
    Feel free to ask me anything breville!

    • @personalview7388
      @personalview7388 3 роки тому +1

      What exactly happens?
      As logically not descaling can lead to much worse result due to issues with heat element.

    • @caffeinefix2751
      @caffeinefix2751 3 роки тому +2

      @@personalview7388 the machines descale program sometimes causes the machine to be confused after filling the boiler with descaler then draining, where the water level probes get caked with this descaler and the machine thinks it's full of water when it's actually empty, then engages the heating element and poof. It's scary how quick this happens. Search "breville no steam" or "dual boiler steam beep"

    • @personalview7388
      @personalview7388 3 роки тому

      @@caffeinefix2751 Sorry, but this is very strange.
      First, original DB do not even have descaling program, only updated one has. Also description is not accurate as they are not "caked", they are ok, just wet, because on normal usage you have high temperature in steam boiler and also water always go very slow via steam.
      Second, as I do descaling - I remove all probes from both boilers and just fill them with descaling stuff, after this suck it up back, and fill with water (repeat 2 times). No program and no issues ever.

    • @caffeinefix2751
      @caffeinefix2751 3 роки тому

      @@personalview7388 this is the correct way to do it. Sadly, when you do the descale cycle as per the manual, that's when the issues arise. A lot of people online complain about this cycle breaking their machines, and from my experience with customers a lot of the time, the steam boiler stops working after a descale

    • @personalview7388
      @personalview7388 3 роки тому +2

      @@caffeinefix2751 You can try to contact someone at Breville about it. As they need to make change to descaling program, obviously. They need to ignore level probes, just drain all stuff and assume it is empty, and fill it up. Another option is to add 20-25 minute pause to make all level probes back to normal.

    I was so close to buying this. Learning that their portafilter is proprietary has changed my mind. It's not that I want to use another portafilter, it's from pure principle. Why make a 58mm portafilter that's proprietary? SMH.

    The Rocket machines aren’t "that" high quality… Especially the apartamento

    • @LifestyleLab_
      @LifestyleLab_  3 роки тому

      I'd have to disagree there. Most of the parts in the Appartamento are trickled down from their higher end models

    • @naf4361
      @naf4361 3 роки тому +9

      Can you give some examples? Because from my understanding, the higher models uses rotary pumps, whereas the Apartamento uses a vibration pump. No PID with the machine, which should be included, considering what they are charging for it. Almost every machine in that same price range includes PID, and some even cheaper like the Magister Stella Prof. Next are the boilers, the higher end machines used stainless steel, as opposed to copper. This is why I stayed away from Rockets in general, for the money, the build isn't particularly that good. Also, if you repair your own machines, the internals of the rocket is a rat nest, and not very well thought of. If it works then great, but when you have to do a major repair, it's a bit of a pain. I would recommend the Profitec Pro 500, it's $100 more, with much better materials and design than the Apartamento.
      I've tinkered with a few Rockets, not a big fan of the internals. But this is just my opinion. The only Rockets I liked is the R60, but at that price range, the ECM Synchronica, Profitec 700, even the Lelit Bianca at slightly lower budget blows the Rockets away. Once again this is IMO.
      Once you go into R9 territory, you might as well save up a bit more and get a Slayer, at this point were getting past home use machines and going into commercial territory. For me the prices Rocket charges is not worth the build quality.

    BDB is a better machine than Appartamento, but just like when people trash the Decent espresso machine line, the only weakness they can come up with are aesthetics, sounds the machine makes, and the espresso creating "experience" ... which is valid, but I think it's a bit overblown and ultimately value for my money and the quality of espresso you can make should win out over these aspects. If I was just buying the shiniest, coolest, retro-inspired design when looking up espresso machines I wouldn't even bother doing research and just pick what looked cool in an online shop.

      I find myself firmly on the fence between wanting the best possible espresso, and also a classic looking, pleasant to use machine... the Decent is on our radar to get into the lab for sure!

      espresso is a hobby, and enjoyment is a very big factor to consider. For some, the enjoyment comes from the tinkering of settings and tweaking of parameters, and for others, it's the actual process of interaction with the machine and it's tactile feedback. This is why both models are very popular.

    Seriously? „The temperature stability the E61 offers“? On an HX machine without PID?
    Come on, please do some research before giving such wrong information to people …
    A ring brew group (Lelit Ellizabeth, Profitec Pro 300) - especially when it is (electronically) saturated as for La Spaziale (and BDB) - is far more stable than any E61. E61 might be famous but definitely not for its temperature stability.

    • @LifestyleLab_
      @LifestyleLab_  2 роки тому

      With proper flushing, an E61 can provide great consistency. Yes, there are absolutely more advanced group types that require less active management, but I think you're underestimating the potential of good 'ol thermal mass
      Also, a PID on a heat exchanger will still require proper flushing, purely by virtue of the way a heat echanger heats the brew water.
