- Chicago Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir Georg Solti
Recorded live at Bunka Kaikan, Tokyo on March 26, 1986
00:30 - I. Trauermarsch.
13:00 - II. Stürmisch bewegt.
27:10 - III. Scherzo.
44:21 - IV. Adagietto.
54:37 - V. Rondo-Finale. Allegro - Allegro giocoso.
Chicago during the ‘80s, under Solti, produced some of the greatest performances and recordings. Not only the mastery and finesse of Herseth, but the beauty of Clevenger on horn and the power of Friedman and Crisofali on Trombone, all held together with Arnold Jacobs on Tuba. It was the greatest brass section of all time!
Amen

Best brass section in history of orchestras ;-)
The best brass section ever.
Certainly awesome. I'll put in a bid for the LSO with Maurice Murphy, Dennis Wick, John Fletcher etc though as sharing that honour (sorry can't remember who was on Horn then.) Ok maybe Chicago win, by a whisker!
Such power from this brass section, from Herseth all the way at the top down to Jacobs at the very bottom❤️❤️❤️
How does this not have more views???? I'm singlehandedly going to get this up to 1m.
my left ear enjoyed this a lot :)
Sorry about that
@@surfercrow Can confirm, right audio channel is missing.
@@surfercrow Your gaslight is not effective.
@@GLC-1979 Um, no. There was no attempt at gaslighting 🙄 Somebody commented (sarcastically) that they only heard audio signal in their left ear. I am listening right now with headphones and have output signal from left & right. If the right channel is truly missing, and it was mixed to mono from left channel source, both ears would still be enjoying the music as I am right now. So my original point stands-Instead of sarcastically complaining & trying to be clever, just try to appreciate the document in it’s imperfect form - we are all lucky to enjoy in *any* form.
I learned all the Mahler Symphonies from the CSO in the first row of the upper balcony of Orchestra Hall in the late 60’s and into the 70’s with Solti, Giulini, Abaddo, et al. Solti’s tempi here are much slower than I recall. (Bud Herseth’s playing is exactly what I remember, since I’ve never heard anything like it since.)
Sir Georg and CSO, Mahler 5th. It can’t get better than that!
I remember very fondly when Sir Georg and CSO were in Vienna in Nov. 1990, playing this symphony. It was an amazing evening!
They recorded this and won a grammy.
What a fantastic performance of one of the greatest symphonies of all time composed by i think the greatest symphony composer ever! And a concert from a time that you,ll never ever see like this ever again, Bravo !!!!!

I went downtown and tried to see Mahler 5 around this time.... could not get a ticket, went home.
That legendary brass section. Absolutely amazing 👏
Watching Solti’s conducting, he hardly had to take care of the brass section...
One can see how much he trusted them...
I heard this great piece with CSO and Solti in San Fransisco. The greatest symphonic performance of my life.
I heard it in Vienna in 1991, when Sir Georg and CSO were touring. Great evening!
The fact that we are lucky enough to even have access to this performance should be celebrated. Thank you! Now why don’t the complainers find some place else to showcase how miserable they are.
I am most amazed by the fact that Bud Herseth makes this look so easy!
Even more amazing when you consider he was nearly 65 when this was recorded (and still 15 years from retirement!). And a very nice man, too. I had a friend who was one of his students and positively idolized him, both as a man and as a musician.
@@stubloom4870 I was at this one, I think he was 78 then: www.bing.com/videos/search?q=mahler+5+cso+barenboim&&view=detail&mid=638DFE8D0051FCBF0CEF638DFE8D0051FCBF0CEF&&FORM=VRDGAR
Bud was surely one of the greatest principal trumpets ever.
Farkas, who played principal horn with Herseth for ~ 10 years, said he never once heard an imperfect note from him in performance or rehearsal - not once.
The best brass that ever was
Defenitely. Today's Berlin Phil is pushing hard. Not quite up to these GOATs. But the best going today.
Herset ❤️
Thank you so much to whoever it was that improved the sound! I've seen this same video in the past, but the sound was terrible! Is there any other orchestra in the world that is more suited to perform a masterpiece of Mahler's? BRAVO!!! Mahler symphonies are some of the greatest works of mankind!
I had a similar upload 10 years ago and decided it was time to do it again. I bought a new vhs to digital converter. The quality has certainly improved in the past 10 years.
Solti 75 years old here. Quite a spring in that step.
Lived in Chicago for 30 years and caught the CSO at least once a year. The brass section was such a brilliant musical force. Herseth, Scarlett, Vosburgh, Friedman, Jacobs, Pokorny.
これぞマーラー5!ショルティがシカゴ響のシェフに就任して最初にとりあげ、全ての楽器が歌いまくる驚異の録音を成し遂げたおはこじゃありませんか。歴史的名演!
Brilliant.
Like queen at live aid
Why do all cameramen focus on the bells on the brass instruments? I would rather watch the person play.
Bud!!! Listen to him SOAR above the orchestra in the finale!
40:55 horn player are looking for this
Yes, yes we are
Always love hearing the Japanese audiences shout with such delight! Terrible sound but what a performance!!
The only classical music where I prefer not wearing headphones
素晴らしい動画ありがとうございます!
ショルティ/シカゴは最高です😊
どうもありがとうございます!

何故か?右チャンネルの音が出ないです?
Bud's bell looked good... Sad they wouldn't just leave the camera on him though.
The Adagietto...
This symphony gives me the courage to triumph over every day. Thank you

Solti, The Puppet Master. God Damn.
Actually, the musicians said that Bud Herseth actually conducted the orchestra from his first trumpet seat.

Who is playing horn 5 and 6 please?
5 is Gail Williams
@@boneclubceo4531I was wondering if that was Ms. Williams or Ms. Ethel Merker.
Both were exceptional players Horn 5 and 6 are just as virtuosic as horn 1-4.

Shame for the mono sound. Still has a wonderful energy though!
Was thinking the same thing. Tried listening to it my car and couldn’t get it to sound correct as it only played in my left speaker, even with panning it to the right.
Yeah, sorry about that. Trying to figure out how to fix this without totally removing the video and starting over. 😟
I wonder who has Jacobs' might Holton now.
? He's on the York in this. Not sure he ever played a huge amount on his Holtons?
The CSO owns both of Jacobs' Yorks
体操のおじいさん、ショルティ。とにかく良く動く。ひじ、手首の回転運動は秀逸だ。

I do too!
