- It may not be Kakadu or Uluru, but Katherine Gorge/Nitmiluk is a dramatic landscape, and its deep gorge carved out by Katherine River is worth seeing during your trip to the territory.
Just 30km north-east of the town of Katherine lies Katherine Gorge/Nitmiluk. A place of stunning rock formations, palm lined walks giving the feel of an Arabian Oasis and ancient Aboriginal paintings done by the Jawoyn people.
The best time of year to see the gorge is between May and September in the dry season and although this is the cooler time of the year in Australia don't be surprised if the temperatures a still extremely hot.
There are many ways to experience the gorge, we choose to walk. The Baruwei Walk gives you an opportunity to see the gorge and river from multiple viewpoints and a chance to see some of the sides gorges.
The Baruwei lookout out walk is a highly recommended way to start. It's a steep stair climb of 900m passing by cliffs of ancient river rocks and pebbles embedded in the narrow rock walls. At the top, you're greeted by an expansive view of the beginning of the main gorge and the Katherine River below.
Next, we continued on and took the Yambi track that leads to Butterfly Gorge. This is a one-way 1.4km shaded walk and home to a large number of common crow butterflies. The narrow track follows a small stream before you eventually reach the sandy banks of Second Gorge. Unfortunately, the area at the end is quite small and hard to get a good viewing spot if there are a few people there nonetheless Second Gorge is still very impressive.
We then back tracked and made our way to Jedda's Rock, an awesome natural rocky lookout with expansive views up one of the bends of Second gorge and the upper gorge area. Then we took a quick little detour down to the bottom of the main gorge via Pats Lookout and the Bamjon track. This is where the rock paintings we saw are located.
