Extraordinary footage. Thanks a million for sharing. I wonder which song Renee Geyer had banned at the time (which Shirl mentions). Scary how much of a stranglehold the immoral religious brigade had over Australian society. Scary how much it still does, but fortunately we've progressed. RIP Shirl...gone way way too soon. We miss you buddy.
In 1983, Mondo Rock featuring Ross Wilson on lead vocals had their song “Come Said The Boy” banned on Australian Radio because the Catholic Church had some connection with a radio station back then and considered the song immoral for some strange reason.
At 5:30 minutes Michael questions Skyhooks moral responsibility. This is the same man who later in his career seeking to out do all the other journalist during police operation in NSW where a suspect who had kidnapped two children and was then holding those children in a farm house, the press had gathered to watch the police who had surrounded the home, Michael ignored any moral responsibility to those children, he telephoned the suspect on the house phone. He was the last man who should be questioning another mans moral responsibility Skyhooks were the true origional one of a kind band. No one ever copied them.
That's surprised me. I always thought the kidnapper contacted him. Willisee was integral in getting those children returned home. If there was anything untoward, I would like to think the police would have laid charges. It certainly was sensationalism in regards to television viewing at the time.
Haha moral guardian issue, Shirl moved to children's TV and was a legend. He was not a paedophile, he inspired and interacted with kids. Many generations will miss Shirl. never forgotten. PS I am still living in the Seventies🤣🤣
Fred Nile was a religious crackpot that worked for an organisation know as the “Festival of Light” back in the early 1970’s in Sydney. Fred Nile was married twice. His first marriage in 1958 to Elaine Nile, and his second marriage in 2013 to Silvana Nero. He has always had some strange hang up about sex for whatever reason he knows. He obviously must take a shower dressed in his suit in case anyone sees him with no clothes on. He is now 87 years old.
Music is and always has been part of the arts, an expression of thoughts so to speak unlike right wing political reporters such as Willesee that have an agenda! I can tell you right now that my childhood or indeed the australian lifestyle in general would not have been the same without Skyhooks and the freedom of music that they provided to the public. Good on them for standing their ground
This is the first time I've seen this 'interview' or I've chosen to wipe it from my memory. It is the worst and most uncomfortable interview I've ever seen, Mike has been told by the Producers and Director to take this approach. Anyway, all the guys in this Band are way too smart for not only Mike but in general. 1975 was still a very conservative time. Mike's suit was meant to be cool and groovy for the day. Hard to believe I know. The 'taboo' topics that the Hooks sang about were let out of the 'closet' for society to openly discuss. Liberation of thought. They were the first Australian act to achieve Gold sales status. They are called The Mighty Hooks for good reason. 2 years later THE SEX PISTOLS were causing an outrage with their lyrics, music and clothes. Have you heard the lyrics to BODIES, about abortion, Fred Niles would love that one. LOL!!!!!!!!!!
Shirl was an appealing combination of smart levelheadedness and irreverence, Such a legend.

Pretty sure the Banned Renee Geyer song Shirl mentions is the first single (I Give You) Sweet Love from her album "Ready to Deal".

Thanks for sharing this- Talking about the indignant religious brigade. Rev Fred Nile in the audience. RIP Shirl :(
Ground breaking band. Loved it.

No one could've imagined at the time that Graeme "Shirley" Strachan would end up being a renowned television star in his own right.
On his own kids tv show!
This is GREAT footage!
the good die young missing ya shirl
I still can't believe Shirl's gone :(
and Mike Willesee passed away today too.
@@petergreen2534 Good riddance to Mike. He was an idiot, he was vile to Skyhooks and Boy George.
Mike Willesee is 33yo here, and doing his best to act like a 73 year old.
Rest in peace Shirl and Michael....
Shirl’s absolute gold with his responses!
On ya Shirl!
Miss ya!

gee these days noone would raise an eyebrw
This is a classic they destroy Willesee
sad how Shirl died miss him & Shirl's world with Claude
The Hooks were ahaed of their time....sadly Willesee was not.
I usually really like and admire Mike Willisee but Skyhooks (especially Shirl!) were better phrased and more able to get their point across. 😂

Greg is trying to get through the tension of this annoying interview by plucking the bass.
Anyone else here watching this in response to the news that Willesee died today?
Not me. Mike Willesee died on 01 March 2019 and it is now 02 July 2022. That was over three years ago since he died.
