I work with PVD machines, some ideas for you. -Etching: you can use hydrogen (effective but dangerous) or even argon plasma, going to a separate anode, to clean your substrate -Use reverse osmosis water or distilled water for your cooling. -Clean your substrate in an ultrasonic cleaner
The vacuume bell-jar is borosilicate glass and at the minute I carnt stop oversputter from coating it.. but it dose kinda wipe off when layes bulid up and oxidise ... luckley the vacuume chamber is big enough that it dosent just coat the howl thing as soon as its turned on ...
I can reccomend some research articles to read, but a scholar search with the terms "ammonia nitride sputtering" would probably be enough to familiarize yourself with the process well enough to adapt your setup.
@allangles4020 would also be cool to know if reactive ammonia sputtering would be the only way to deposit a nitride coating or if it's possible to just buy and use, for example aluminum nitride wafers, as a target. I don't see why both wouldn't work but I'm curious
I chouldent get the map() function to work with float values as far as I'm aware they dont match although I've only been programming arduino for about a month or 2

Yes you chould this magnetron has the potential to create the same coating you see on drill-bits and endmills such as TiN (titainum nitride) and AlTiN (Aluminum titanium Nitride).... the best one for ware resistance and low friction is TiAlN however if the material you are coating is soft I whould assume the coating whould chip off alot easier with impacts but if all your after is abrasion resistance TiAlN is mostlikley the coating your looking for

Sup bud, how you do to avoid ions from completely cover the vacuum bell? I mean so it doesnt cover the plastic in metal. Thanks

You should do a video using your sputtering setup with ammonia gas and nitride coat your homemade shell mill

I like that idea... think I might get a few blank drillbits and make a video testing diffrent coatings untill I find a decent combination 👍
