  • Retrieval is a task that can assist many disabilities. In this video I demonstrate three methods for teaching such a task, as well as two methods for teaching "drop it."

    I've been working with my alert dog for over a year and we're now having to transition her into mobility. Thank you soooo much! She has noooo interest in chasing, retrieval, or holding. But with your lesson and a sock filled with treats (because she's super treat motivated) I now see light at the end of the tunnel. ❤️

    very helpful tutorial, thank you!! another tip for "drop it", if you have a smaller dog that can easily and comfortably be picked up, lots of dogs will drop things when they're lifted! i have a small dog (shih tzu) and we taught her drop it by giving her a toy, lifting her, then saying the command. it worked really well!

    I love Harlow! She reminds me of my Ella! Ella is an Aussie mixed with a golden retriever and she has the exact mannerisms. I also love your videos. We started transitioning Ella from an ESA to SD recently since we all kind of decided it would be more helpful for me in the lung run.

    2019 :) now!
    She was waiting for the treat after she picked up her leash :( u forgot.
    You dropped the keys so fast she was trying to swallow the treat from the first keys retrieval.. I hope inexperienced persons are careful with taking the keys from their doggies teeth, , gentle does it .......
    You look so lovely here l. I always learn so much from you.
    Very greatful. Thank you

    THANK YOU! I've looked all over UA-cam and the internet for a free easy to understand method to teach a dog :\ It's been terrible as every method I do that people recommend only makes my dog hate me or fear me :< I don't want my dog to fear me.

    So, I have a GS as a service dog, she is amazing, we have been training for sort of a month or month and a half, but I have a serious issue, first, she doesn't really love treats, she eats them and she knows she did well when she gets one but she doesn't melt for them, and my biggest issue, she doesn't know how to play, we have tried with balls, toys, squeaking toys, socks, kong toys, but nothing works, how can I teach her to "hold, leave and retrieve" with that issue? 😟

    I know this is old, but I'm curious as to if anyone would have an idea. My dog is trained with snaps, mostly as a corrective action, do you think a clicker would be too similar a sound and confuse the dog?

    • @愛-t9w
      @愛-t9w 6 років тому +1

      Aspen I personally wouldn’t use a clicker because of the snaps.
      You should try instead of a click, a verbal word! I use the word yes in place of a click and it works splendidly.

    my puppy is obsessed with socks, she'll search them out and then destroy them. She is very much still a puppy (10 months). Do you have any tips on how I could discourage this or prevent it? This is just the beginning, she loves to shred towels into strips as well. Shoes too. She'll go after a blanket if I don't catch her. Any advice would be great!

      Jane Budde Redirection is the best thing for that in my opinion. Have a rag tug toy and every time your dog goes for something they shouldn't, put the toy infringe of their face and make it really exciting and get them to tug on that. If you're confident they learn that the only thing they can tug on/chew ect is their toy.
      Also teach them a 'leave it' command so that they know to leave the things that aren't theirs, then redirect them to the roots they can mess with.
      Hope this helps!

    Hey there!
    I adopted a mini schnauzer from a high kill shelter.
    his only skill was house training (which is Fantastic).
    But I've had him for 6 months now and we're working on all of his advanced skills.
    I too have epilepsy, low blood sugars and low blood pressure issues from a brain injury. Toby alerts for my seizures and low blood sugars.
    But, he is Totally disinterested in playing and doesn't seem to have a favorite item besides his training treats.
    This skill would be Invaluable for me, but I can't think of anything he wants to pick up?
    Any suggestions?

    • @mjturner6291
      @mjturner6291 7 років тому +2

      SP C If he's interested in treats only then wrap some treats in an old sock or bag ect and when he goes to sniff it, click for interest. He'll mess around with it for a while but if you keep watching he'll eventually pick it up just as a new thing to try, click and JACKPOT!! Tons of treats, reward like crazy. Then repeat, eventually he'll get the idea that picking it up is what you want.
      Hope this helps :)

    • @caylafluck

      richard thors she says in another video that she only uses pieces of kibble for treats, so it's not unhealthy for Harlow to eat a bunch of the training treats.

    My dog is REALLY struggling with this :( Every other task he literally learns in one or two training sessions, we've been in this for a month and he still isn't getting it. He loves fetch so i tried making it a game but he just tried the item around the room, so I'll try the taking it out of their mouth before he has the chance.

    Does Harlow take things she is not allowed to take with out permission as Kai always is taking things with out being asked and chews them

    • @ChronicallyJaquie
      @ChronicallyJaquie  8 років тому +3

      +Rachel Meehan No, Harlow does not do this. If she does take something before I ask her to, she always brings the item right to me. This is because she fully understands retrieval and LOVES doing it. Word of warning: If your dog has taken something/is chewing on something that you would like for him to eventually retrieve, don't scold him. It could lead to him not wanting to get it for you in the future. For example, my friends dog chewed up a rather nice leash, and she punished him. When we began teaching him to retrieve, he was very reluctant to put the leash in his mouth for fear of future punishment. I am not indicating that you punish Kai, just letting you know what could come of it if you do! Instead, use it as an opportunity to practice "give." A good "leave it" command can also come in handy here.

    • @emilybrown8334
      @emilybrown8334 7 років тому

      Arcane Goddess I would suggest training the dog yourself, depending on if you are physically able and doesn't really interfere with a physical disability. There are plenty of videos like this one and others that teach how to teach a command. Just a suggestion.

    This is really helpful. I recently got my dog approved by my PCP to be my E.S.A but I also have dizzy and fainting spells in public due to my Anemia and Low Blood Pressure. I asked my PCP if Peanut Butter (My dog) could possibly go from being my E.S.A to a possible Alert Dog since he senses naturally when I'm not feeling good and he scratches at me and whines or whines to other people around him. He also calms me down a lot in public with my anxiety around men due to past incidents. If you ever read my comment I would love if you could talk to me about E.S.A's, Service Dogs and the process of training and stuff. I would love tips so I could feel safer in public as well as having an improved Peanut. Thank you if you read.

      terry brown Actually, it's been found dogs love to work and feel like they have purpose. Harlow, if you watch some of Jaquie's content, shows no signs of distress or passive aggressiveness towards Jaquie. In most cases, she'd run to her if something bad is happening. Jaquie loves Harlow and vice versa. Service dogs are not slaves. They love their owners and want to care for them too. Please research before you comment.

    How would you teach this to a dog that is aggressive with possessions. So if you try to take it out they growl and are aggressive.
