I am so happy to see Sam back on The Dice Tower! BTW, I bought Memoir 44 and all the major expansions thanks to Sam's original review and love it since then:)
Bought the game around 2010. Went looking for videos on UA-cam and stumbled upon Dice Tower and specifically your reviews Sam. From that point on, bought everything I could get for memoir and my boardgame collection has been growing since. Thank you very much for everything you’ve put out there. You’ve been a catalyst for the hobby for me. Still love this game so much. Doesn’t get on the table enough.
Great revisit, Sam! We absolutely love Memoir ‘44 and play it all the time. Contrary to what some reviewers say regarding the set up, I find it very therapeutic and really enjoy the set up aspect of the game. 10/10
This game is one of the greats! My personal favorite of the Command & Colors system... mainly because of the theme, but also because of the huge variety in this version of the game. Definitely an evergreen game.
So cool of you to put a Heart on the subject. I have the same feeling you just described about the remembrance that people were put through so much suffering throughout history. That's why I made a historical guide with pictures for my Sekigahara copy... so people who are not that much (or not at all) into history could understand that "this game" is not just black and yellow blocks. Thanks Sam =)
Love M44, it’s so fun to see you revisiting this game. Keep doing these! I remember getting excited for it when you talked about it and the various expansion packs way back. It’s a bit lucky with the dice and card draw but that makes it fun to see how things play out. I wish I had time to play it more often. I’d be interested in seeing you revisit Rum and Bones too, I haven’t pulled that out in ages and I wonder if it’s still fun for you.
Oh hey I just picked up Memoir 44 over the weekend and decided to watch some vids on it and hadn’t realized Sam was back at The Dice Tower! Great review, and I’m loving this title already. My wife and I finished 4 games in our first night and planning on continuing tonight. Definitely see what all the hype was about.
Until I understood the thoughts behind the cards it was very frustrating for both me and my son. But when we stopped playing it to win and instead played it to have fun it all changed. We sometimes ad two cards per player to give some more options. But as some of the scenarios is pretty impossible for one side to win it`s kinda fun and interesting to play them several times to see what can change when you get different cards. I love this game.
The big con to me is set-up. Hunting around for the darn tiles. DoW tried to alleviate this by using the terrain set. The GMT maps are 'simpler', but at least with Memoir, it's easier to find the right the units for set-up.
My friend recently started playing board games and he love war themes. I've been thinking of either buying this game or Undaunted: Normandy. Not sure which would be a better option.
I have a new copy of this game, plus all 16 expansions in shrink I'm about to put on sale, I simply won't get it to the table, so its good to know people are still interested in it.
Shame if you never get to play it, but I wouldn't think it would be a problem to sell the items you have. People are often always seeking for the expansions and they dip in and out of being in print.
I have been able to check out, set up, play, and check this game back into the library at Meeple Con (precursor to DTW) in 30min…jussayin’! Granted, both of us were well versed in the game and there was no teaching time involved at all. But setup and tear down are far less egregious than many other games.
@@adamwilson2706 No sorcery utilized at all. Me and my buddy were just dialed-in! It's now a tradition whenever he and I are at DTW, we play M44 together...at least! Good times!
I want to like Memoir '44, but I just feel like Undaunted does it better. Specifically, I feel the card draw and dice throw combination in '44 make it too swingy.
I have Undaunted, played it a few times, and liked it, but it didn’t even come close to M44 for me. I’ll have to revisit that one, too. Thanks for being here!
@@adamwilson2706 Yep, both swingy, but I feel like I have more agency in Undaunted, both in being able to pick the cards' abilities and the fact that I'm picking and choosing what I put into my deck.
My only con of this game is the laborious set up time. When you start throwing in expansions and you have to get pieces from multiple sets it gets worse. Once it’s set up it’s great fun. If it were easier to store and set up it would get to the table more often for sure. I find myself turning to games like Summoner Wars far more when I get the itch to play a head to head battler simply because you just shuffle a couple decks and off you go.
Tide of Iron is a really cool one... especially since it is more granular and customizable with the groupings. I wonder if there is any chance of that one being printed again.
Unfortunately ToI isn’t available anywhere. I have the second edition base, but never tried it tbh. Would love to do this sometime, but I’m afraid I will like it so much, that I want all the expansions. Those aren’t for sale right now.
I dial it back to -46db while I’m talking, if it’s going at all. I’ve dialed that back a bunch, actually. Do you mean the style/genre of the music? I’m a metalhead…sorry.

Really appreciate the “revisit” video format here! Stirs me up to bring this to the table again. Thanks Sam!

Agree!!!
Disagree. Ancients or Napoleon are much deeper with more variety.

Happy Memorial Day Sam and a beautiful send off to those who have sacrificed everything for our country.

So true! It’s more about trying to figure out the scenarios’ puzzle than just winning.
Thanks for the revisit, Sam! I’ve yet to try this one but I definitely need to.

It’s one of the few games that has remained popular as it has been for over a decade. It’s a real testament to how great a game with its longevity.
Sam is BACK!!!!
Miami Dice!!!!!
Bought this 4 years ago largely based on Sam's old review. Awesome game, play with my 10 year old son.
Thanks for the review Sam!
It is good to see you Sam!
Amen Sam, those that do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. I always try to read the background text in games like this.
One con that I see some people say is the setup time of the game! But for sure this is one that I want to try!
It's on BGA, there are some issues with usability but it is a great way to play the game, no setup.

@@SamHealey6 That had to have been a smaller scenario... or you used sorcery.😄

Thank you for the review.

They are both swingy, I play Memoir more online but they are both fun.

I think the system just works better Napoleonic era or earlier. I much prefer the command and colors system in those games.
I am quite surprised this isn't a 10 for you considering how long and how high it is on your top games of all time.
I explained that in the video, but yes, it’s truly a great game!

I’m not a fan of the card mechanism. Tide of iron is a better game imho.

@@KabukiKid I don’t think it will be. Thankfully I bought all the expansions when it came out.

ToI is really great. Played again after many years and it's terrific fun.
music is too loud. huge turn off
