  • My son and I are back on the road again now that I’ve healed somewhat from an Achilles tear back in march. We found ourselves at SLEEPER STATE PARK this weekend. The campground was packed as expected for such a great park but to my surprise the beach didn’t have many people due to the rain scheduled is my guess so we took advantage and got some fantastic photos to print later.
We did a lot of biking on the trails at the campground which are smooth enough for a 6 year old to take on, went to visit the Huron county nature center and also rode the wilderness bike trail up the road and had a great time on our 1st camping trip of the year.
I love the fact that they don’t charge for showers at sleeper and they even have HOT WATER! The staff was friendly/welcoming, facilities were well taken care of and I always saw someone cleaning the bathroom throughout the day or refilling supplies. Around 11pm camp got quiet and wasn’t rowdy at all like I have experienced at some places in which if I’m solo or with friends I’m cool with it but when I have my son I like for him to have peaceful sleep.
Sleeper State Park is 723 acres of forest, wetlands, forested dunes and half a mile of sandy shoreline stretching along Lake Huron’s Saginaw Bay. Visitors can watch both sunrises and sunsets, roam the forested trails, relax on the beach and enjoy the shade of the modern campground. The day-use area is located directly across M-25/Port Austin Road and features a half-mile of sandy beach, a beach house and a picnic area. A pedestrian overpass bridge provides easy access.
There is a fully enclosed kitchen and dining hall available that features a commercial kitchen, a walk-in refrigerator, dining area, outdoor picnic area and parking. To make a reservation or learn details, call the park at 989-856-4411.
The park was renamed in honor of Albert E. Sleeper, governor of Michigan (1917-1920) and Huron County resident, who signed into law the statute that created the state park system.
