Budget LS Swap Miata EP.20 Ford 8.8 Diff Swap pt. 1/2
Вставка
- Опубліковано 11 лют 2025
- This is definitely one of the hardest parts of this swap. Swapping the Ford 8.8 diff which requires making axles, subframe modification, basically taking apart and re-assembling everything in the rear suspension plus more.

Let me know what you thought of this video!
Factory Mazda rear hubs & bearings are known failures on track Miatas, we've seen lots of them go bad in road racing. With drifting and running a dual caliper you'll heat up the rear brakes more than normal which will transfer more heat into the bearing. Replace these regularly, track Miatas should replace these once every other season.
Also be careful with the extended studs, measure the knurl diameter of the stud and the hub. We've found aftermarket rear rubs vary in the knurl size. The factory rear hubs have a slightly larger knurl compared to the aftermarket hubs you get online. If you put the studs designed for the factory Mazda hub in the aftermarket rear hub they explode on track. It’s a great way to end up in a ditch.
careful with the what? edge of seat here
Ace Futura the factory rear hubs have a slightly larger knurl compared to the aftermarket ones you get online. If you put the studs designed for the factory hub in the aftermarket rear hub they explode on track. It’s a great way to end up in a ditch.
its not on stock hubs. its on hubs from a 180 or 240 so a much heavier car with bigger bearings
Hello just wondering which hubs exactly did you use Taylor?
Off from work + cold beer+taylor ray video = Ahhhh.
Daniel Brown that's what I'm missing. *Cracks a cold one*
I work nights on the railway in the UK, nothing better than coming home from work making a grilled cheese sandwich, a couple ice cold beers, then seeing notifications for Taylor Ray, Adam Lz, Gingium and so on
your energy is contagious. you are often a bright spot in my day brother
I recently got my first couple of Milwaukee tools (just some M12 stuff for now) and you(r videos) convinced me to join the Milwaukee family. Definitely not regretting it :D
Glad to hear you like it too!
Everyone like this video for Taylor's struggles
Great build video. I have an NB and I get motivated when I see the videos. Bought my 04 not running. figured w/broken motor I could concentrate on a swap. Changed the ignition timing sensor, I noticed it was loose. It must have wandered into the timing plate behind the balancer . Knocked the points off the plate.
I love driving this car.
Just gotta do what you can with what you got! Stay positive
everyone follow this guy to see the mad G35 swap he's got going on
Sloppy brought me here 🤙
I know youll probably weld the 8.8 because its the cheapest and it works but the 8.8 has a ton of aftermarket lsd/locker/spool options for CHEAP, you can put a detroit truetrac in it and have a gear driven lsd for about $500 diffs for 240s are 2x that
Tanner he should go spool for ultimate reliability.
Ilikeboost nah off road lockers >
there is a little trick for getting races out! weld a bead on the race where the ballbearings ride, then let it air cool. and it should pound out with a race punch and a hammer. stuck races are a common thing on large trucks with floating axles where the hub rides on an axle housing. I've used this on many stuck races that cannot be reused. prevents damaging any other parts and makes repairs way cheeper if your trying to be cost effective. keep up the cool build! its nice to see someone actually building a car the way they intend it to work and still keeping cost low.
17:00 You want to use moly (molybdenum) grease on those joints. Thats why the grease looks black. ;)
Taylor Taylor Taylor take your mig welder , lay a bead on the race in the knuckle. When the bead cools it'll shrink a few thousands and should come right out . Done it many times .
For future reference you can just put the shaft in a vice and hit the Cv-joint off with a copper Hyde hammer, it won’t damage it. I’m pretty sure that wasn’t Cv grease either you used for the shafts. Those Cv band pliers are defo for the clips in the picture, and are the best clips for Cv boots.
Keep ripping it man love the build, always learning!
Hey Taylor when I built baja bugs at an off road shop in the 90's we would get the longer studs and weld them in. VW bugs have lug bolts that thread into the drum and are notorious for loosening up. The stud kits available were screw in and not much better. So we tig welded the studs in 4 spots. Strong enough to hold in place but easy to cut if a stud broke. The nut and stud will be fine when tightened. You have already spent the money on those so just tig them in place. The torque of the stud and nut are fine the spline and press is just to keep them so they don't spin when trying to tighten. I have dozens of cars running around that has been done like that and are fine.
Also a cheap press is well worth it. Makes hub bearring changes in minutes. Just did my kids Focus hub bearrings yesterday and it was under an hour from driving in and back out. A bearring splitter is worth the money as well. Yeah you can weld or grind to get it off but doing it right is faster with a cheap press and some random metal scraps to space things etc.
Just got done watching your video of you talking about all your cars, nice to come back to your channel since before you got your doors hit in on the miata lmao. Cheers Taylor.
At least your humble enough to share the good, bad, and the ugly with all of us. We all have days like that, just keep on keeping on brother.
The part about the red grease was hilarious man. Fucking best car channel on youtube. No stupid bullshit just quality vids! Excited for more, keep it up!!!
This is the curse of the DIY car guy ... you may save money and gain priceless experience, but you trade hours and hours and hours for it
I haven’t really been watching your videos but I’ll tell you that I really should be. I love how positive you are in frustrating situations. Need more of this positive attitude in my life keep up the great work on these vids. Can’t wait to see this little beast rip up the track
Love coming home from work and seeing you have a new video to watch. You should do jet tags.
levi smith garage built jet tags would be dope
Much love and respect! I can't wait for the Miata to be completed! Keep shoving the content in our faces! We miss you!

Hey Taylor. To get the rest of the bearing out you can weld around the whole circumference (preferably where the ball bearings sit). This will make it shrink and you should just be able to push it out with your fingers. I had to do the same thing on my BMW, so I know it work and I know that you're good with a welder
Perfect time for sure ! Have a good day Taylor!!
Taylor, on that race that's stuck, run a bead of weld on the ID of the race from inside to outside on an angle in at least 4 places. It will shrink the race and will come out. Have used this method on front wheel bearings on numerous Fwd cars
Awesome vid. That mount rattle in the intro bout has me rolling every time. Thanks for the axle break down too. Never had the courage to bust one apart.
Yo Taylor you should forsure check the play in the pinion input on the yolk. Each Diff will have specs for clearances and things like that. Making sure it is correct is simple and will ensure that it delivers the power properly to the wheels.
@taylor ray, the ups the downs, the every day life. You got this man! Thank you for bringing us along the way and seeing this build. Its like a movie with twist and turns. Have to turn in next week to find out if Goku can save the world
this is the first drift youtuber ive seen who gets more views on his detailed build videos than his drift videos. that's pretty damn impressive
Love that you have a duramax, glad you’re enjoying it! We got our pickups about the same time. I just put on a MBRP SLM 5in exhaust on mine. It’s a must!! Gained about 1.5mpg and it def runs cooler. Sounds amazing too lol.
Excited to see you rip the Miata
not sure if anyone mentioned this below but best way to get the outer race out is to use a dremel to cut a slit along the length of the race then smack it with a screwdriver and hammer. It'll crack the race and come out fairly easily.
Ball joint press w/ the extra master press setup from harbor freight is a great tool for multiple suspension components. I used it on my wheel bearings, not trying to be a know it all, just friendly advise
The outer races in the hub are easy to get out when you have a welder. Just run a bead around the race and they shrink when they cool and should fall out.
17:00 it’s the moly grease, it is usually jet black, new.
Really stoked to see this completed! Keep going man, you're doing awesome.
13:06 exactly this... :-D
I think you are using the wrong grease for the CV joints. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Alex Rodriguez I believe you are correct. It looks very much like Taylor is using red wheel bearing grease in a CV joint. That isn't going to work well for long. I hope Taylor sees this.
Yes, I've never tried red grease in a CV but agree it is not correct.
Handled that way better than I would have, auto parts store, you had one job!
You tube could be a youtuber's best friend when it comes to research on how to build axles and replace bearings.
Pro tip. Run som weld on the bearing race. It will shrink as the weld cools and then fall out.
Don't forget to pick up grease seals on your next parts run(if you haven't already), and are you doing a conversion from the 4 lug to a 5 lug pattern, so that your rear tires are the same bolt pattern as your fronts? If so you would want your pointy studs on that, and not on the hidden ones.
Rockauto my dude! ALL THE PARTS YOUR CAR WILL EVER NEEEEEED. I live in the city so the parts stores around me are trash
Next time with those CV's, clamp the shaft and hit the end with a punch. They come right out. If you're worried about nicking them, use a brass punch.
“Parts don’t work and you have to wait 2 days for new ones” SO. MUCH. YES.
Good guy Taylor closing his garage door so he doesn’t bother his neighbors. I have to do the same thing 😂
well done, such a considerate neighbour, some people can be thoughtless, keep your chin up like you do, keep moving.
😤😤 finally some taylor content !! What more to ask for !
Weld a bead on the race and they will pop right out. I do it all the time 👌🏼
@Taylor Ray you need a Freud steel demon carbide tipped blade for the sawzall, that will rip into the bearing races.
Awww yes...the feelings of defeat...my honda decided to go no spark suddenly last monday....and it was midnight by the time i got it towed home....had to leave for work tuesday morning...which yeah im gone all week so now i get to play diagnostic man this weekend
#GETTAYLORTO1M
It's videos like these!, that make your videos a hell of a lot better then Adam Iz's !! Keen to see the miata finish mate.
with the end of those axles just gotta put them in the vice then angle the end down and use a copper hammer to hit it off and it will just slide straight off
Stay positive
Taylor you're rad
Put a run of weld down the bearing track . It will either crack once cool and fall out or come loose and will knock out
I'm working on the axles right now. I was looking for the right way to fasten those bands on the ends of the boots. Did I miss you finishing those?
Taylor looks a lil' bit yellow at the start of this, no?
#nofilter #valencia
They don’t call him jaundice for nothin
He's a Simpson
dirty spots on mechanics shirts are a badge of honor!
Interested in coilover video info. I can't determine what series to go with on my Miata.
Axles "problem" Bigger axles is driver side (more power goes to this wheel) Smaller one is helper side... #itsjusta6
Can’t wait to see u rip some tandems with this bad boy it’s gonna be sick🔥
Stay positive man it’ll come together
Totally understand the haunting of the dreams. Quickly becoming one of my favorite channels. Keep being Awesome. 😎
Did you get a phantom itch on you nose as soon as you dipped your fingers in the grease. It happens every time I start a dirty job. Haha
Taylor do you have an extra Miata Roll bar laying around I can buy? Great vid btw
What lights are mounted on your garage door? Also how do you have them wired to go up and down with it?
cant wait for this to be done fam keep pushin taylor, cheers.
Did you use the correct grease? Pretty sure it needs to be molybdenum grease .
Sweet ive been waiting for this video so long! Thank you taylor! keep up the good shit!
No Turbo; No Problem= Supercharger?
Dustin Steele no boost = no problem
Mike G, you might have a point there lol.
NAWS!
Whos ready for 3rd gear burning rubber?
ive wondered if you read these but im glad you opened the door today....
Not defeated, just delayed. Keep up the good work Taylor 👍
You rock Taylor good job on staying motivated
Hey Taylor do you happen to know the part number for the orylies ford cv 29 spline
Each time I hear you intro i want to drop school and go study into cars haha
A press makes wheel bearing and studs for that matter a walk in the park. As for the studs that hub probly isn't from a Miata and that's why the studs don't fit?
Best build on UA-cam
next time an air chisel will get the race out. love the video
Yes im so excited ima put a 4.3 v6
It's amazing how much power those little balls can take.
Loving the new intro 😎
Talking about sitting there at night thinking about working on your car and how horrible it might be instead of just going for it. Hahahaha that was right on point.
Love the Miata Taylor, good luck
White balance off or are you rocking that Hulk Hogan orange tan?
Ah, you need to use CV grease, no wheel bearing grease in CVs.
Air chisel that bearing out ,, always works for me
I want the work vfkf you had on the vet still have them
Did you say parts authority? I used to work for them like 5 years ago. My sister still works there lol.
Of all the luck, just how it goes sometimes. Love your videos and I'm loving this build. Keep at it, I'll wait however long it takes because I know you won't let it just sit. Take your time and get her done right.
Every time I try to click the link ( in the description) for the music it always says that it can’t find the song
Keep it up man I love your channel!
My OCD goes up whenever you talk about your shirt. It says "No TURBO no problems" but you say TURBOS lol
you don't need a knuckle you can just get a seal driver and put it on the inner race of the bearing and punch it out
You're going to jig'em?! Drift Dad is turning into Fab Dad.
Really good love watching your channel and thinking about doing my own Mazda mx5.. 👍👍
Do a budget big brake kit on the Miata!!!
You gotta take the good with the bad man. Just think towards the end goal :D It's going to be soooo sick. Keep on trucking man
8.8 Gang in our Japanese cars!
Lil finesse goes a long way
12:59 all the time 😂
That Alan Watts intro 👌
Ok man, I gotta ask. Why not use your bench vise for the axle rebuild instead of that struggle juggle we witnessed?
