    This method is so exceptionally good that after a mere 15 minutes, I had become native level fluent in all dialects of Chinese, including from ancient dynasties. I also somehow learned Korean, Thai, and Japanese. Strangely, I also learned music theory and UNIX. Incredible. I can't walk anymore, but I can speak in several languages. Win win.

    As a Hong Kong person, this is quite useful for foreigners even though it’s impossible for them to master it

    I got confused with Meng...If i just use it for Name the tone is go down (4) but when use for famous The word Meng changes Tone to numb 2 Actually
    The caracter 名 is same

    • @CantoneseClass101
      @CantoneseClass101  6 років тому +1

      That's right, some characters have different pronunciation depending on the context (sorry! XP)
      For 名, when it's in writing, it's usually pronounced ming4 (eg. 姓名 sing3 ming4 "full name"; 名字 ming4 zi6 "name")
      When it's in speech, it's usually pronounced meng2 (eg. 我個名 ngo5 go3 meng2 "my name"; 出名 ceot1 meng2 "famous")

    There are way too many English speakers who go to Hong Kong and elsewhere and dont bother learning the local language. Hopefully this will change with all these online courses and videos.

      Agree! Although people can get by with English in HK, knowing Cantonese will definitely bring them to a deeper level of understanding the culture :)

      @@CantoneseClass101 I'm going to Hong Kong the end of January travelling from the USA and am trying to learn the basics so that I can speak in Cantonese instead of English. I want to be a tourist that at least tries! Cantonese is the primary language, it almost seems rude of me not to at least try to learn a little. Your lessons have been the best to listen too and the most enjoyable that I've seen, and you all teach it well! Thank you!

    31:40 the "tong" sounds like a rising tone but it's marked as 4?

    • @CantoneseClass101
      @CantoneseClass101  4 роки тому

      The tong4 is the lowest tone, that's right. In this case, you might hear a slight rise at the end of the word because it's the last word in a question.
      Feel free to ask if you have any other questions.

    This is my question formation: nei5 sik6 ping4 gwo2 hai6 mat1?

    • @CantoneseClass101
      @CantoneseClass101  5 років тому +1

      Hi Louis Adibe,
      Nice try. The first part is correct - nei5 sik6 ping4 gwo2 "you each apple"
      If you put a question mark at the end it'd become a question.
      But ...hai6 mat1 means "what is...", so that become a little strange. You can say - ping4 gwo2 hai6 mat1? "What is ping4 gwo2?"
      Feel free to ask if you have any questions.

    You can't learn to speak Cantonese in 40 Minutes, you can learn to say different things but that's about it, to fully learn Cantonese I'm sure it would take a hell of a lot longer than 40 Minutes.

    • @CantoneseClass101
      @CantoneseClass101  5 років тому

      Hi Teodoro,
      The numbers behind the romanization are tones. Since the same pronunciation in different tones has different meanings, that's an essential part of Cantonese language. :) To learn more about Cantonese tones, check out our other video here: ua-cam.com/video/XmmktTDoS04/v-deo.htmlm18s
      And for more in-depth explanations, check out this lesson on our site! www.cantoneseclass101.com/2015/11/06/ultimate-cantonese-pronunciation-guide-8-cantonese-tones/

    Cantonese has 9 tones. Please check

    • @CantoneseClass101
      @CantoneseClass101  6 років тому +2

      That's a theory we can't get behind. All our lesson materials use the 6-tone system, which we believe is more straightforward and user-friendly.
      The extra 3 tones in the 9-tone system are actually glottal stops (-t, -p, -k) that shouldn't be considered tones.

    You said that if you can speak Cantonese will give you more “job opportunities “
    However, if an employer in Hong Kong knows a foreigner can speak Cantonese they will NOT employ you. So what “job opportunities “ are you talking about?! (Not to mention that Hong Kong people don’t even try to use Cantonese with a foreigner- they will ignore them and speak English)

    • @CantoneseClass101
      @CantoneseClass101  6 років тому

      Thank you for your input. From my experience, HK people and company really appreciate it when a foreigner can speak Cantonese. It shows that the person put in the efforts and has a better understanding of the HK culture.
      It will definitely be a bonus point during the hiring process, I cannot think of a reason why one would have to pretend that they don't speak Cantonese in order to get a job in Hong Kong.
