Knowing street food can be a little sketchy for travelers in Nepal (and refrigeration capacity is often weak), I called in the help from my local guide, Kanti of the *Backstreet Academy Kathmandu*, who takes me inside of Nepali breakfast foods and signtseeing of Kathmandu (Thamel) I couldn't fit all this deep fried amazingness into one video, so this is a part one video of exploring Nepali foods. Get ready, for more food videos on Nepal!! Read my review on Backstreet Academy tour if you want to book your spot: wp.me/p9430J-dik
GRRRLTRAVELER | Christine Kaaloa hi !! love your vids... did your guide know the right places to eat so you don’t get sick? is it still a risk and how did you find her?
+Dorian M Yes. As a food guide in a tour company- Backstreet Academy-, she takes you to safe places and will make sure the food preparer gives you freshly cooked food. I research activities and tours to see which companies have good reputations but also offer unique cultural experiences I feel would be fun, interesting but also safe for my audiences in the case anyone wants to use the operators I use. If I feel/experience un safe or 'iffy' situations on the tour, I will note that in my blog review and/or express that in my video like i have done so in some of my videos. If ever interested, check description box for blog links. When the post is published (1-2 weeks later), it will have further details.
Temple shown in 5:01 is known as goddess annapurna, the goddess of food and grain. This temple is important part of this ason bazaar, as it is the oldest market of Kathmandu. This is also known as first departmental store of Nepal, This temple is located in the centre of this medival period market surrounded by six streets, and each street used to be trading for different unique item. such as one is street only for food items, one for utensils, one for cloths, one for worshipping material, one for electronic/electrical appliances etc. Worship of this god mean to get success in trade.
Love the Nepal episodes ! I have been there twice Please go outside Kathmandu to pokhara, lumbini, nagarkot, or Chitwan Such a different vibe from the city I am planning mustang In Kathmandu, try some more Newar food ! Also Tibetan food is good
I've gotten to the point where I am just at a lost for words. I sit here and watch you explain and show us the many places we may either never will see or never thought existed. for me its truly hypnotic.
Finally i see something except chowmin and momo . Nepal has different varieties of beautiful cuisines but sadly youtubers dont care to show them . I hope you find some other traditional dishes . (Please god make someone feed her nepalese bizzare foods like bhudi and chustaa) 😂
+Saksham Shrestha A momo or two will eventually pop in (sorry) but missed on the chow mein. Having a local or guide show you around makes a huge difference in getting behind the tourist wall with food . 😁
Never seen this side of the earth before. Thank you for giving us your point of view on your travel to Nepal and particularly some of their food offerings. Keep it up. I may one day travel there and you will be one of the reasons why.
I love how you travel to... well let's say less touristy places. And I also love how you present each new place. It really makes me want to venture to non popular touristy places. I mean, this place looks awesome and the food looks super delicious.
I agree! It's why I'm glad I'm not in a major city in Korea, like Seoul. It's a small place but its big for me and even Korean's don't know much about this place. That's why I'm trying to make lots of videos about Seosan (and other parts of Korea) and your videos inspire me!
Sel roti is Nepali bread. It’s not dessert, “holy food”, or other nonsense. It’s a round bread, plain and simple. You can have it as a breakfast, lunch, snack or dinner. We have many breads but this holds special place. You can make it sweet or blend, you can have it both.
GRRRLTRAVELER | Christine Kaaloa Yes. We do. If you ask me one country that's closest to India culturally and historically, its Nepal. We are proud of Nepalese people. We love them. I can't comment about the govt's behavior towards Nepal. But one thing is true, that the heart of every Indian has a special place for Nepal. Our friendship is as old as the Himalayas and the Mount Everest.
im gaurav Same same but different! Nepal has its own unique and special vibe! I am a Kathmanduite and have studied in India. India is great in its own way but Nepal has its own identity. Nepal is amazingly diverse despite being a small country compared to its giant neighbours, India and China. I may be biased but I feel (and many agree) that Nepal packs quite a punch considering its size...
Not the same at all. No women in India anywhere. You don’t see them working in shops, restaurants nowhere in India. Kinda gay. All guys. Nepal there’s women everywhere
I spent a month in Nepal earlier this year delivering aid to Sinduli deaf school and other remote schools in need. The traffic in Kathmandu was unbelievable, and i spent most of my time there lost, lol, because the streets were a maze
Nepal...going in April. Would you say it's a good season to be there? Also will be doing a 9 days hike...any tips on altitude sickness precaution? ? Tgx. Xo
I am also traveling in April. For hiking it’s a good time but October is the best but you have better chances of cheaper accommodations in April during hiking . Popular tourist Cities in south like chitwan and pokhara would be boiling in high temperature 30-32 degree Celsius . If you are a good hiker ABC would be best but if you like casual hiking Langtang would be best. personally I have been to both and I like langtang. Very good place. You can also continue to gosaikund from lantang if you want more hiking. But gosaikund is little harder than langtang. If you travel slowly altitude sickness can be reduced. You can ask local recipes which you can chew to reduce altitude sickness. Good luck with your travel
You seemed to have awesome guide there!! 😀 Must be a fun and interesting food tour just watching this first part of your vid. Looking forward to the next ones! omg i loved the masala chai too! I brought some home and made the tea for my parents 😀 sharing the experience with them!
GRRRLTRAVELER | Christine Kaaloa included Nagarkot in my ITI but I had to tweak my plans when I got there. 😐 Explored KTM, Pokhara/ trekked to Poon Hill and I kinda chickened out in Janakpur after a day 😣😂 I found it challenging in the beginning maybe because of KTM's busyness (I wanted my way out of KTM after 2 days... but ended up enjoying every bit of it on my last 2 days), weather and trekking (I have my winter essentials but learned it's not the best combo for me lol, I dunno how I freakin survived 3 days, ahhh the viewpoint made up for the struggles haha got a bit sick after). Midway through the trip, that's when I started to appreciate Nepal. Met the nicest locals who showed me around and looked after me! I think I almost cried on the plane stairs on my way back to KL/ MNL. Lol
For some reason, I don't get notified of responses on YT. Just found this now. Hats off to you for doing Poon Hill +Leah Luna. I was tempted but I didn't have many days left. Nepal has some of the kindest, gentlest people, but yeah, going outside of KTM is nicer- the roads and dust make it look miserable. Anything "country" is lovely and chill tho. Why didn't you buy winter clothes at the shops? Omg, what happened in Nagarkot-- too much culture shock? Or too much marajuana?
Bhairav is not the evil manifestation of lord Shiva(the god of destruction in hindu Trinity). He isa fierce (aggressive) manifestation of Shiva . Evilness is different from aggressiveness. Bhairav protects his devotees from the enemies. In fact ,Bha means creation, ra means sustenance and va means destruction. Therefore, Bhairava is the one who creates, sustains and dissolves the three stages of life.
I went there for last 2 weeks. I havent tried those street foods. I wish I had. I eat more on fresh vegetables and fruits and in the Hotel I ate only vegetable Chowmein . I really loved that :)
Only avoid some street cart foods. The one from stores are made well prepared. The people who make them do not compromise with food. They always keep it clean and fresh.
Always love watching your videos, Christine! I am looking forward to watching part two! I sure wish I could get over to Nepal sooner, rather than later, your videos make me want to travel sooooo bad! As you know, Kathmandu is high on my list. I remember being in Bangkok when that earthquake hit. There was a doctor in our hostel that was trying to get there to volunteer, along with another woman from Austria who had just spent almost a year there, that was also trying to get there to help out. It was so sad, and I am sure they are still devastated from the disaster. I hope the tourist industry is bringing a few needed dollars into that area.
Early in the clip at the temple that you visited. It's not "evil manifestation of Shiva" It's an "aggressive form of Shiva". Like Kaal-bhairava. The difference being that Shiva is usually worshiped either as an ascetic or as his avatars. In this avatar, he is a killer of demons. Ergo the "aggressive" version. Evil is not worshiped by Hindus or Buddhists in any sects.

Wow, you should do more videos where you talk to locals. You are a natural interviewer. Every time you interact with locals it is such fun but this video really showcased your giftedness in this area. Looking forward to the next video.
Thanks! But I also was lucky to get Kanti, who was an awesome guide and great on camera! Within minutes of meeting her, I knew I building her in as a cohost on this video. I pummeled her with questions and she had fun jabs back! She's the kind of guide you'd actually like to be friends with!
I just love how you travel so locally and you do this alone. How did you get so brave to go away from the touristy things? I don't think I could do it.

your guide is so cool, such a smiley and welcoming gesture of her
+8bit Yong Yes, she was a perfect guide- very welcoming and knowledgeable ! =D
Bhairav is not the evil manifestation of Lord Shiva. Actually, 'Fierce' would be the right word to describe Bhairav.
Yup, that would be the correct term " Fierce " not evil. Evil obviously gives it a whole new "negative" meaning.
absolutely!!
