My ladybug supplier recommended spraying the ladybugs with simple syrup (half sugar and water mix) at time of release. This keeps them from flying for a few days and they become habituated to the release area.
I have been very lucky as to not having any pests ....yet.... but I will definitely refer to this video if I do... great information! PS.... SOOOOO glad you're back!!!! ❤
I got a bunch of these cheap flat 2" x 2" plastic dishes that have a little lip on them from the dollar store to dump my pirate beetles and the husks in right next to the stems. They're perfect for releasing and then afterward I just remove them and don't have mounds of unsightly husks on my soil, which makes me worry about mould & bugs hiding in them. -oh btw, I started using pirates bc of you, so thanks! I am surprised you don't ever have scale - the bane of my existence.
oh thats smart!! I cover mine up with a bit of worm castings afterwards and hope it just becomes organic matter haha but your way sounds much cleaner!! I'm sure scale is in my future 😆 can't keep em away forever!!
Hellooo! I’m really enjoying all of your videos and I’m glad I found your chanel! I’d love to see a video about successfully moving plants out of a plant cabinet! You mentioned before that you might do one and I’d like your advise on that 😁 Have a lovely day! Xx
Awesome video!! So cool to see the thrips being eaten 🤩 I've tried using beneficial bugs a few weeks ago but was only able to spot a few... They probably all died T^T (sprayed my plants w endall 2 weeks before introducing the predatory mites).. 😅 will def check out your links! Ps: i really appreciate you including the canadian amazon links as well! 🙌💜
Great video. Very thankful when I saw Canadian flag on your post. Good I learned good stuff to spray again with neem oil every week since I just got my plants in and sprayed them. So far so good but can you just how many times should I spray them with neem oil solution to kill all those larva sitting in my soil from when they were left outside in the summer. Thanks 😊💚
I’ve read that pirate beetles bite…have you had any issues with them biting or going all over the house? I am so tempted to get some for my cabinet…but I’m nervous lol Btw I’m so happy you’re back! You’re definitely one of my fave plant tubers💕
I have actually intentionally handled them a bunch and never been bitten! Then ONE GUY snuck onto my ankle and nipped me when I was in the greenhouse and it reminded me of a mosquito! Annoying enough that I noticed but not painful from my experience! Thank you 🥺❤❤❤
@@PlanteriorDecorator Thank you! I’m definitely gonna place an order..these thrips and spider mites are relentless this year! Do you have any difficulty keeping them alive during winter? I see there’s a bit of a disclaimer on the website.
@@AlohaAdri I would avoid ordering if it's super cold! They do a great job packaging, but -30 is more powerful than any good packaging haha. Also they do well if you have the right indoor climate in the winter :) they do great in my greenhouses since they're warm with high humidity! They probably wouldn't be very helpful in my cold, dry Canadian livingroom right now haha
Important Topic. Great video. Wonderfully put together. This video is going to be my reference when fighting bugs. The magnifying mounted glasses are the best. Thank you.
I recently added soil dwelling predators (name started with an S) because I found out from a growliv rep that 30% of the infestation is pupae in the soil😱. I follow a pretty similar regime as you. Though when my thrips population were high, I released orius weekly for 4 or 5 weeks. They reached my rare plants section and I wasn't messing around lol. I'm from Medicine Hat, 6 hours from you!
Hi Alina, thanks for this! Super helpful, as I’m also in Canada (Vancouver) and literally found a new breakout of thrips two days back after I thought I’d cleared them out over the summer. I’ve also been using Safer End-All, but haven’t tried systemics (Canada 😞) and I’ve been wary of using beneficial bugs inside the house because I didn’t know how they worked, or if they would get out all over the house after running out of thrips to munch on. A follow-up question for you: most of my plants are in LECA / semi-hydro. Have you had any experience using the beneficial bugs (pirate beetles specifically) in semi-hydro? Anything to be aware of or would they behave the same way and still work? BTW, thank for the link to the online bug shop, they have free overnight shipping to my location which is fantastic. 👌🏽 Thanks again for the awesome videos - great to see you posting regularly again! 🤘🏽
The worst bugs are thrips IMO for how long they'll be gone for, only to return 😫 That's a great question... it shouldn't be a problem for mites since you place them on the leaves... and you can place the pirate beetles anywhere and they can fly (prefer to walk) so that also shoooouuuld be okay 🤔 maybe a good question to ask the company prior to ordering to be safe!
Hello Nice to meet you New Subscriber here from Amman Jordan The Middle East Love plants and have quite a large collection Thanks for all the great information
Hi. Great video. Thanks a lot. What glasses did you use in your video? I've tried few magnifiers and never had luck with any. Only one I found has to be connected via usb and it's not practical for plant shopping trips as I like to give the plants quick check first purchase. Thanks!
Great video. I have gladiolus plants and they are dried and dying by thrips, i think. The leaves are dried and yellow. The other plant continue to have the same presentation. They are green but the yellow colour begin. What can i do?. Thank you so much for responding.
I never even heard of thrips before, so glad I saw your video so I can tell what it is if they ever show up! So, what about scale? I’ve had scale happen a couple times, ants were farming them in my bay laurel that I summer outdoors and bring in for the winter. I practically had to drown it last time it got scale. It worked, but would rather not be trying to do that when it gets big. Any suggestions?
Thrips are the worst, it's good that you haven't heard of them and I hope your plants never get them 🤞🏻 but at least now you're prepared if you do! Ooo scale is a great question... I think green lacewings, but I'd suggest contacting the bug sellers first to get their recommendations. Once scale has entered the 'armoured' stage it's a pain to treat.
I use systemic granules, works awesome and protects plants for 8 weeks, in between that I use insecticidal soap. I would think that a pest that has fed off a protected plant and then eaten by a beneficial would also kill the beneficial insects. Same principle of rat poison killing a snake or owl that has eaten a poisoned rat.
Crazy bc I've dealt with aphids outside in my garden on Lillie's, and the bush literally must've sent a 911 out bc lady bugs came and tore the aphids up. Sadly I always kill aphids by hand. I'm thorough I smash them by hand and spray with peppermint soap and water. I am always successful but this year I was about to order lady bugs from Amazon. I mean they hit every single type of lily I had. I was mad as hell. Next I use rubbing alcohol 70% and a small paint brush for spider mites. I dip wipe with the brush rinse and repeat on each leaf side ,stem, and I do the pot. Then rinse after 6 hrs..keep an eye and repeat of necessary. I have had my dahlias, hibiscus, Mandevilla, petunias, begonias all inside since Sept and just found stupid spider mites on my dahlia. Out of nowhere. I checked repeatedly and still I just found the bastards. Ugh so I am doing that this Evening. I'll treat every plant as a precaution. I'm currently going through a Mandevilla issue leaves wilting for no reason 😩.I shall figure it out. I've just gotten grow lights. I'm hoping I get the hang of it bc last year my dahlias lasted but we're leggy. Anyway I liked this video and I subscribed, sorry for the length.lol

I need those glasses so I can be sure I don't see thrips😬, my eyes aren't that good, but I'm hoping NOT to see any.
@@PlanteriorDecorator I'm so sorry. I have been using it for quite some time and have had no pests since. I also do something most say not to do🤷♀️...I immediately give a new plant a peroxide bath, treat it and repot it. I figure I'll shock it all at once instead of several times. It works for me, and I rarely lose a plant because of it. Why don't they allow systemic in Canada?
From the info I found online it seems like systemics are believed to cause issues for bees! So Canada has had them banned for quite a while now. Makes it difficult to fight off bugs... but does force us to trial some natural options I suppose!
I think the beneficial bugs are TOO EXPENSIVE. And everywhere I've looked, the companies who sell them also charge a mint for shipping. Everyone can't just afford to throw hundred's of dollars a year towards some bugs. IF I have an extra $100, that's gonna end up buying plants...

So then what do you do with preditory bugs once bad bug infestation is over? Do they just die off?
Yup! They die without a food source :)

I also live in a dry cold area.
Do you have a video that shows how to transfer plants out of the greenhouse?
That's the next video!!! 😁🌿 will be released as soon as I recover from my unlucky bought of Christmas COVID hahaa 😷
Any recommendations for flat mites?
How often do you recommend to release orius insidiosus and or cucumeris for preventing bugs??
Soooo do you think my fake plant might get infected with bugs
The chances of your plastic plant getting bugs are low, but never zero 🕷
Thrips WILL infect your fake plant just to taunt you. They are nasty little monsters.
