I would never have imagined that a video on chess clocks could be such a compelling watch. There was information, humor, drama, and surprises (cat toys!). Bravo!
As ugly as is it, everyone knows it. With this clock, at least there is always someone able to set it up Please forgive me, I try my best to defend it (I don't even know why I do so...)
I bought my first chess clock 2 years ago off ebay just before my first competitive tournament and practiced, making the move pressing the clock with the same hand and writing the move all night long before the first game to control my anxiety. Now its so second nature to me that I was playing a simul against GM Gawain Jones at GCL and was acting out pressing an imaginary clock after every move that I annoyed the kid next to me and I think I made Gawain smile.
I have recently revisited chess after losing a friend that played chess with me over a decade ago and I am thinking about trying a tournament for the first time in my life🫣 I am trying to learn how to write the moves and work the clock and don’t want to embarrass myself. It is in a month and I am having some anxiety about it 😩 great story though thanks for sharing
When DGT2500 was released, it was presented as a replacement for DGT2010 which makes a lot of sense. As it lacks some of the versatility of DGT3000 and also the option to connect to the e-boards, the assumption was that it would be followed by another model aiming to replace DGT3000, providing all its features (including the e-board connectivity) combined with better display and easier to recognise lever of DGT2500. But for some reason this never happened. As for DGT2010 and other models only showing second once you get below 60 minutes (or even 20 in case of DGT XL, I think), what I dislike most is that there is often an interval when one side still shows hours and minutes and the other already shows minutes and seconds which can be quite confusing. Thankfully I mostly meet them in rapid games which either already start below the threshold or get there soon.
My favorite chess clock is the Z-Mart II, or ZMF II, chess clock. Bright old-school LED displays, perfect if you're playing in low light, and easy to spy your time across the room. It has different color options too (my favorite is orange). Buttons respond to a light tap of your fingertips; no need to push or slam down buttons. It has all the standard programmable options for USCF or FIDE tournament play too. I wouldn't call it an "off-brand" clock, as they're a pretty popular second option with (after the ubiquitous DGT clocks) players at clubs I habituate. They're actually a modified version of the original Chronos clocks that once ruled the digital chess clock world.
At a super GM level using the chess clock on an app is no longer an option because you have to leave your mobile phone hidden in the toilet (or in your sock for the oldschoolers) and also you are wanting to run some other apps during your game of chess.
Does using the phone with the Tempest keep the phone screen unlocked like a video would? Would there be an awkward moment when you have to unlock your phone mid-game to resume using the clock? Great video, very useful!
I feel like a simple USB device you can plug into a phone would work well with an accompanying app. Something tactile to press for phones with cases that allow them to stand on their side. And much more portable than the Tempest thing.
I stopped playing it because it’s a fun surprise weapon but not so good for a full time repertoire :) it’s better to play e4 to get a sense of all different kinds of positions and keep b4 for bullet or a surprise!
I own the DGT 3000 faux wood a DGT PI and a Chronos. Why do you want back lighting? Are you playing chess in very dark bars. I can understand the seconds display gripe you have but back lighting is not a needed feature. Even when playing outside and in direct sunlight it is easy to see the time on all my aforementioned clocks.
DGT clocks are very expensive. I bought a broken one for 10$ from my local 2nd hand market and it just works but not recommended cuz I had to repair it.
I ran an in-person tournament last month for beginners, and first prize was a fancy "old-fashioned" clock. The winner was absolutely thrilled -- had never seen one of those in person before
PLEASE---Tell me how to set both primary AND secondary time controls on a DGT North American clock. (Example: G/90 and 30 min. secondary) Direction book in the box doesn't say, and tournament directors expect one to "just know" this. 😖
The DGT 2010 is not a bad chess clock at all in my opinion, and the situation you mentioned seems very superficial. After having played in many Fide rated tournaments, seeing the seconds before you're under a hour shouldn't really matter. Except DGT, the LEAP clocks are good budget clocks as well.
I first started crushing my friends at chess in 1965. You whippersnappers may not realize it, but chess with a clock is an abomination. What's the rush? Clocks are for people who secretly hate chess and want to see the business over and done as quickly as possible. It's like seeing how fast you can finish off a box of expensive cigars, or how quickly you can blast through an art museum without slowing down to see the exhibits. Or maybe eliminating fine art portraiture and replacing it with paint-by-numbers, and later thinking it's just as good. All this is the fault of players who have allowed self-styled Federations to turn a classic game into a mere stunt. You win a real chess game by your moves, not by your time. Admittedly, I do have a clock - an oldie with dials and stuff - but have never used it; I inherited it and it just doesn't feel right to treat it like it deserves, by pitching it in the bin. 99% of people reading this will have not the foggiest idea of what I'm talking about. Too bad. Chess by the clock has made the world a poorer place.
My friends and I suck at chess but we like to play for fun. We can play more games in the same amount of time with a chess clock. One of our friends is halfway decent at chess so we give him less time on the clock to give us a chance to beat him. We don’t beat him but we have fun anyway!😂
Hey there old timer, I respect your comment but politely disagree. Truth is… the clock adds a competitive aspect to the game. I go to chess club at 2 and expected to be back by 6pm when my wife gets home. Sorry, but don’t see myself playing til midnight cause it’s a rook endgame and you played bunch of rook moves and only 2 pawns moves in one whole hour and I missed dinner and a movie with the missy’s ; ) Capeesh?
This video is just as accurate as my DGT 3000
I would never have imagined that a video on chess clocks could be such a compelling watch. There was information, humor, drama, and surprises (cat toys!). Bravo!
Me who knows nothing about chess clocks: yeah screw the DGT 2010!
all my homies HATE the DGT2010

Hahaha I’ve done this too 😭

Thank you! Good timing, I was looking for my first chess clock!
I got u
Things I learned today:
-lula is indoor cat
-dgt has a near monopoly for no discernible reason
-chess clock backlighting is a thing?
I always have the phone app for the sole reason that I just won’t remember to bring one. But it’s def always fun to have one
W yap , can’t wait to see what you do next
Similar to the chess sets video, your takes here are spot on. I want to see seconds!

Interesting video !
I use to play with friends at the bars and restaurants, with quick time controls (
the second i got in time trouble i would accidentally launch the phone off that stand without question

I’ll have to check them out!! 📝
New Lula vid hype!!!!

Surely one player using their own clock gives them the advantage of familiarity and increases opportunity to tamper with the clock
Yeah it’s weird. it doesn’t happen outside of the US as far as I know

Great video, very useful!
Yes it does!
"chess tournaments are plagued with children"
I love it!
Awesome review. To the point but fun. All my homies hate the dgt 2010

Nice video. Can you do another polish opening video. Why did you stop playing it ,is it that bad.

I used to think the DGT2010 was a sturdy piece of hardware, but it just got demolished in less than 15 minutes....
I own a rare gem- the German engineered “silver schachqueen” , FIDE approved, official in Bundesliga. Rare in US, at least
Informative and funny 😂
What about the old time wind up clocks?... I'd get one of those too because they don't use batteries.
As far as I know, the old fashioned clocks don’t have increment!
@@lularobs Oh yeah I forgot about that. Great point.👍
I cant believe you did not buy 15 chess clocks for this review 😅. In all seriousness, great video. Keep up the great work.
can you use a app on your phone because possible cheating with a chess program on your phone ?
I'm not playing timed games yet, but when I start, I'll probably use the phone app.
How do the cats like the feeder?
they are still figuring it out!! it’s harder than their last one

that's cool! i've never seen them available second hand before :)
I think Carlsen uses a DGT Easy plus at home, but dont quote me on that
I have a old fashion wooden chess clock with the flags not fide approved anymore.
Cute piece of home decor now!
I ran an in-person tournament last month for beginners, and first prize was a fancy "old-fashioned" clock. The winner was absolutely thrilled -- had never seen one of those in person before
DGT 3000 is only 60 USD in India

In Europe the arbiters set the clocks for you so I have no idea

such a beauty, am I right guys?
You look like my ex but with a British accent
You are so cute.

Some say looks don’t matter, but who wants to learn stuff from an unattractive person when you can learn from someone who looks great? 💛😹💛
Marry me and I'll subscribe, is that too forward? Might be why I'm still single.
What a rude person. Never judge a book by its cover. Unsubscribed.
