    The same goes for politicians. Their job is about maximising the number of people voting for them. That means making as many promises to as many people as possible but never fulfilling those promises, because as soon as they do that those people have no reason to support them any longer. The incentives of their job are aligned for them to promise everything, deliver nothing, and to take credit whenever someone else helps fulfil any of their promises. If anything they'll try to quietly make things worse to bring their cause more support. If you have an important cause for the love of god keep it out of politics or it will never be solved ever.

    • @sdfggdfg5fgdfg
      @sdfggdfg5fgdfg 6 місяців тому

      and when they don't deliver someone will tell you you should have voted for someone better...
      ultimately, they pretend not to be responsible
      with voting and manufactured consent it's ensured that the interests of as many people as possible is ignored for the gain of others. That's the point

    • @r3dp9
      @r3dp9 6 місяців тому +2

      So then, what would you call a man that actually keeps most of said promises, and gives credit to the other persons who help those promises get fulfilled, has a list of problems to solve so long that there is no risk of ever running out of problems, and actively works to reduce the total number of laws thereby promoting simplicity and reducing the number of things 'solved' by politics?
      I believe the US has someone like that on the ballot for president this year.
      Just because interests don't align perfectly enough for unconditional trust, doesn't mean they don't align more than well enough to get by on a working relationship.

    • @oldsoul3539
      @oldsoul3539 6 місяців тому +28

      @@r3dp9 Politicians always seem great *before* they get elected, they're not being held to anything they've promised yet. If you're depending on a politician you're better off doing it yourself. Create a business or organisation, or join an existing one for as long as you believe they're still doing the right thing, but politics is worse than doing nothing. Never confuse the idea of doing good with actually doing good, it's easy to get so caught up with the former that you never do the latter.

    • @sdfggdfg5fgdfg

    There is no such thing as perfectly aligned human interests, just like there is no such thing as a perfect circle. The closest you can get though is a healthy marriage. In marriage, you and your spouse will not have aligned interests, but it is possible to have the *honest goal* of aligning interests. If you say "my interests might be different than yours, but I *want* them to be same," your spouse says the same thing, *and you both mean it,* that is a really good first step towards having as perfect a circle as can exist in an imperfect world.

      Trouble is, this assumes a definition of 'good person'. We need a pillar or base that enables us to define 'good' as opposed to 'not good - neutral' and 'bad'. Then we need to share that with enough other people to influence additional people for our understanding of 'good'. There are cultures that rate treachery (trickery) as the highest virtue, eg Yali in Irian Jaya.
      I've just been listening to sections from Brian Merchant's book about the Luddites where, apart from Lord Byron and a few enlightened mill owners, the establishment of Parliament, Church, and monarchy assumed that, given the chance, you had a duty to maximise profit and minimise wages as that was how the world is and how we should function as human beings (nature red in tooth and claw).
      The Old Testament prophets (very interesting to read with a time chart and history book in the other hand) rail against regimes and a majority populace who assume you should make the most of every opportunity and crushed opposition that called for conscience and qualms.
      Boris Johnson, as a classics scholar, has a very different core morality from people with a more Judaeo-Christian undergirding to their world view. Concern for others is a weakness and a flaw to be despised and exploited by those who don't care.
      The problem for us is... how robust is our understanding of 'a good person'

      You see that's exactly the issue with this kind of video.
      He makes points that sound perfectly resonable and presents them in a professional manner so people will immediately believe him. However, what he's presenting is actually only his own opinion and not some scientic truth that a lecture would typically want to be. If you dive a bit into the whole topic surrounding youtube money, you'll probably find that he paints a very onesided picture that leaves out a lot of points that don't really align with his story. That's true for all the examples in this video but let's take focus on the UA-cam one.
      Now, it's true that some networks are only out to milk the creators under contract as much as they can and that was expecially true in the mid 2010. Of course, there are some who still work that way today as well.
      However, what Loyd is leaving out is that there are also many networks and agent who really do make the job for their clients easier and enable them. They do this by mostly taking care of paperwork and other background stuff, like sifting through mails, helping with accounting, make sure the videos don't violate any laws and in case of a legal dispute, they often have good ties to very experienced lawyers in the field. They can also help by setting up collaborations with other creators under their contract or bigger entities that operate from outside of the UA-cam space. In general they just take care of the annoying little tasks so the creator can focus on actually creating his content, where they'll also help with technical knowledge or locations to film.
      So as you see, the story is really not as onesided as "never trust an agent" and the video is more of a "Lindybeiges bad experiences with agents." than a factual lecture. And sadly, this didn't happen for the first time either. Now, the history related videos are, as far as I can tell, great. No wonder, as that is also the field in which Loyd has by far the most experience and expertise. But many of his videos on philosophy, politics or economics are not on par with that quality and tend to be heavily opiniated, which often leads to being very onside and not balanced.
      Not to say that you can't like them or should stop watching Lindybeige. I too like the man's videos a lot and will continue to watch him, even if I might not agree with everything that he says.
      I just wanted to let you know that not everything Loyd says is necessarily true so please take his videos on topics aside from archeology and history with a grain of salt.

    @johnturner7790 6 місяців тому +13

    There are times where motives align very closely though: the keygrip and sound tech both want their band to look and sound as good as possible to increase the rate of high-paying gigs. The vocalists may bicker amongst themselves about who should get the prestige of lead so the entire band may never be perfectly aligned, but the various members of the support crew (so long as there's only oke per position) will be very aligned in that goal.

    • @PaladinJoshs
      @PaladinJoshs 6 місяців тому +8

      Within certain contexts interest often appear to align. But the point of this video is that they still don't because people are individuals. Maybe the sound tech has a crush on a vocalist so they have an interest in making them sound better than the others (or other drama). Maybe they are drying to impress someone with their personal talent so they take actions to make themselves look good that undermine slightly the overall performance.
      You can't ever separate a person from the role they are in and say that "within the role" all interests are aligned. Even simply differences in the idea of what is better within that context will create different interests and opposing forces.

      As a person with a band which did tours and recorded fancy albums - no.
      Most of the support crew are in smaller bands themselves, or are sound techs. Here's the 4 people in your crew:
      - Sound tech: wants everything to go smooth so he keeps his job.
      - Amps guy: plays guitar in a band. Secretly hopes to be considered as a replacement for your guitarist should things not go well.
      - Drums: same as amps guy, but is a drummer. He is also a sound tech, so he wouldn't mind replacing the sound tech as well.
      - Driver: wants to get stoned as much as he can until 4 hours before he has to work again.

    Speaking as a real estate agent, I want to mention that it's important to not spend too much time on the market because the perceived value of a home diminishes the longer it's sat around. The seller can lose more and more bargaining power with a potential buyer, so listing at a price that would likely get in competing offers (ie lower price) can end up being more beneficial than listing at a higher price and negotiating down from there. When listing your own home as an agent, the lack of having to pay a commission does not encourage you to spend more time on the market than if it was a client's- and if you mean spend more time working on the listing before going to the market, well... yeah. You're the agent *and* the client. It's up to the client how much effort they want to put into sprucing up the place before they go live. We can *encourage* them to do more, but we can't force them or anything.

    Thanks for the great advice, the main reason agents exist is because they have wormed themselves into industries not because they are necessarily helpful for you. Since being a yter you don't need to find work per se then it makes no sense because these groups have no special in with the industry, the industry is just yt. There's also many ways they can cause problems. All the advertisers who want to have people represent them seem to be mostly scammers, too. So that is not a great route to get extra money that doesn't rely on yt. You could just ask your followers to give you a dollar and keep them from getting scammed out of 50 dollars so you can get that dollar.

    I think there's a good point to be made expanding on the common interests of a group. While the interests of a group and the individual may not align on a particular objective, and in fact seldom align perfectly at all, it is often still advantageous to take the hit of small misalignments for the benefit that comes with participating in a group. I think it's especially clear in areas where an individual can do almost nothing about something on their own, but a group can accomplish results that, while not exactly the same as what the individual would wish accomplished, is close enough to be worth participating in.

    I love this creator. Just about everything he has produced offers a great deal of value to myself and my friends. I hope he wasn't or is not getting scammed by mcm grifters. God Speed be with you Lindye😊

    For some reason, my brain included the word "secret" between "your" and "agent". I was very confused for while on why he was talking about MCN and acting agents.

    Since there is only one of these on the channel I'll just assume this is a re-upload for some reason. I wish though that Lindybeige would post some sort of explanation for it. Oh well... 😉
    Edit: After reading some posts I see both confusion and an answer to it. I STILL wish the host would say as much in the title/description feed. Most UA-camrs do, I know I did when I made content. Not essential I know, but it WOULD save some confusion in the comment section. 😛

    I think dear Lindybeige, that problem is there, same as it was for all my favourite youtubers.
    I bet you story goes like this, you are very passionate about sth and try to share your passion with the world, production may be mediocre but your soul is out there. I followed you for years now, i remember when you first uploaded 15 min video...not a 3 min discourse on sandals but a 15 min rambling about some interesting obscure thing. Then one day, and i shit you not, i was excited like hell, first 45-60 min ones, about Hannibal, ladders in siege, white headhunter, gladiators- one could not possibly ask for more.
    But there something happened, war in Ukraine, the interviews got many views- of course, but i havent watched a single one of those- too much saturation of the topic as far as im concerned. But thats beside the point- for many youtubers (like Skallagrim, or Big Herc ((prison chanel, very intersting and highly recommendable))) passion became a job. You have your audience, you have your sponsors, so now you have to bang out 3 videos a week and a bunch of shorts too. I get it, thats where money is.
    There are very few that still hold fast and resist becoming youtube pest, even fewer that found the middle ground(like Thoughty2 or History Buffs).
    I have only one thing i beg of you, because for the longest time you were an absolute ray of sunshine in the medium that is youtube: with all the love in the world- please go back to your old formula ❤
    Loads of love from Iceland!!

    Many people recognize that when buying or selling a house, their interests are not aligned with those of the real estate agent. However figuring out what the real interests are, and how big the misalignment is, is difficult. When I was selling my apartment with an agent I was initially focused on just what Lindy said. The agent just wants to sell quickly get his share and move on. It sounds logical but in reality the motives may have been different. In my case the agent seemed to like having an extra option in the books and did nothing but a photo in the window and an occasional little visit for the record. It cost him practically nothing just to wait, maybe even similar to the actor story. After some time we found a buyer ourselves without much hassle.
