I never understood that line of reasoning since you don’t need to know how to make a cake to know it sucks
Its a arguement dumb people make when someone doesnt agree with their opinion about something they feel emotionally connected to
Legitpenguins69 Most people who make the argument haven’t made any music themselves. It’s basically an example of hiding behind an undefeatable bullshit argument, that is if you aren’t actually making music. Otherwise, the argument just falls apart, like in Melon’s case. Most people who make music don’t actually care about opinions because they understand that there’s always someone for your art. If you like something, it’s likely someone else does too, more than you even. If you hate something, vice versa.
You do need to know how to make a cake to know WHY it sucks, though.

I mean the led zeppelin discog is very "safe" in terms of ranking, while I would love to see him rank all led zep records, I'd rather see him do the queen or pink floyd records, as their discography is larger and the preferences can vary wildly amongst listeners/fans.

shhh
"You Have to Make Music to Review Music" is a misguided response to a legit problem - reviewers are increasingly less able to engage music on its own terms and tend to review it with reference to gossip, lifestyle, trend aesthetics. Describing artful sound in useful words is actually really hard and is arguably a dying art. I think Melon does it pretty well and I'm willing to wager that his background as a player helps him unpack and describe what he's listening to as well as he does.
Nah. I dont respect his opinion. I think he is smug
Then you have to criticize music to criticize music critics!

Being serious, maybe being a musician could help you understand the whole process and effort behind someone's work, but in the end, what matters is the final product. The only thing you need to review music is listening to it and knowing how to arrange a set of objective criticism and subjetives opinions and interpretations in an understandable fashion.
i want to agree, but i find it really difficult to, especially when it comes to instrumental music.
people who dont understand what its like to PLAY an instrument - any instrument - just dont seem to appreciate instrumental music the way musicians do. something about knowing what it's like to play, and imagining the person making the music as you listen to it, just adds so much to the experience
Did the man who invented music reviews, go to music college?
Hmm, okay then.

Yes. Your opinion is more valuable the more insight you have about the thing you’re talking about. The more you know about playing basketball, the better you will be at discussing it. Same with music
Oh Lizzo, that is honestly one of the most b******* things she ever could have said.
What did she say...
@@miaomiaumiaw pretty much the title of this video. actually, she said anybody who reviews music but doesn't make music should be unemployed.
I've seen a lot of musicians questioning the technical knowledge of people criticizing them. But I've never seen they doing the same with compliments.
Exactly, it goes both ways.
Oh hey, it's my favourite music reviewer; Screamthany Foodtano.
Thank for you this! As a musician myself (I produce music with FL Studio, play the drums/acoustic guitar, as well as study music theory), but, more importantly, as a FAN OF MUSIC, this mindset always baffled me. It's along the same lines of, "You think my video game is bad? Well, do you even MAKE games, bro?!". Art is meant to be critiqued, as it is a part of the enjoyment process. Rock on, Melon! - Kevin
I like the semi subliminal vegan propaganda featured in this video.

That point you made about tasting food and cooking is the exact same point I always use when arguing about this. I love how you say that what makes you appreciate or dislike the food is not your ability to cook, but you ability to taste. I'm happy we are seeing eye to eye on the matter :)
exactly, so put cal on the reviews to review music more. he does have an album after all
0:01 When you tag someone
IMO it definitely helps when thinking about the actual structure of the songs and how they sound (ie: a piece of music sounding so terrible because it’s played out of key or something) but it’s hardly a necessity. I agree with what you’re saying here, Anthony.
Day 9 of acknowledging that Anthony is a good person
I like that number
why didn't you give it a 10
Raúl Pérez come back tomorrow
There's no such thing as "bad guys" or "good guys." We're all just... guys, who do good stuff sometimes and bad stuff sometimes. And all we can do is try to do less bad stuff and more good stuff, but Anthony's never going to be good, because Anthony is not bad.
I'd argue that its the other way round, since producing my own music i can't listen to music without analysing everything and understanding how artists achieving the overall sound as a whole and therefore hearing a song or an album as a "puzzle" if you ill rather than a full composition.
It's true, and this is the main reason that Cal is vastly more qualified to do the music reviews on your channel.
Its just a fact that musicians understand music better than non-musicians.
Have a Bass-Off with Davie504 and you can keep reviewing melon
Hey, Fantano. Do you have any advice on how to promote music. Not my own, but others. I want to do it in an engaging way so that others hear the music/ film that I'm into while the creatives in question get more publicity. i was thinking something on Instagram stories and reels.
Thanks for providing this insight anthony, very cool (:
"Not the terminology millshake thats going to bring the boys to the yard"
Well said boss
exactly how i feel on it, very well said. literally every person who uses this logic is a fangirl of whatever artist is on the table, or under 13- those two usually go hand in hand as well
I need to hear this so badly st this moment. Thank you.
As a jazz musician, I generally talk about specific music theory if I’m debating the effectiveness of that technique with someone else. Otherwise, it’s pretty easy to tell things such as confidence and execution by simply listening to a lot of music and allowing your ears to expand. I hear a lot of details in my favorite songs that I never noticed 3 years ago.
i let my ass expand too im glad someone else does it
You have to be a human being and not a Melon to review music!
I'm not a musician, I don't really play any instruments sans some piano lessons when I was a kid and some theory from that, but my boyfriend is a musician and I definitely value his opinion very much but I feel like the only thing that I refer to him for which I can really can't asses on more than surface level is the technical ability on display- right, like he understands the chord progression and the difficulty of moving through that finger positioning or employing that technique or staying on the beat in that time signature- but hey if I really wanted to I could learn about that through doing some ear training watching guitar lessons on youtube and live performances without ever picking up a guitar myself and honestly learning through music criticism. I feel like it just really depends on how much a critic has grown their knowledge of a subject, how much of its history they've dug into, how much theory and criticism they've read. There's nothing you can't learn and music is meant to be accessible by nature...why are you publically releasing music if you don't want it to make an impression on listeners and you don't want them to think about it or talk about it. You don't get to dictate how your art is interpreted anyways and if no one "understands it how you meant for it to be read" you did a shit job at communicating. The people who the music was meant for, ie everyone, have the right to form an opinion about it....musicians are capable of having bad takes on music anyways, sometimes they're too close to it and overvalue certain aspects such as really technical playing and composition.
the intro gives me the vibes of the "ALL MY STUDENTS ARE MORONS!!!" video

I'd really love to see you play bass, I know you have snipits of you in other videos but it'd be really cool, imo, too watch you jam bass by either writing your own stuff or play covers of your favorite bass lines! Just an idea, much love, and love your videos!
I've always wanted to write about music because i love it, but i didn't play anything, just a little bit of bass, so this resonated a lot.
Just a couple of weeks i just started a blog, my goal is to be a freelancer and to sell reviews of albums and concerts to magazines, i don't care how long it will take but i know i i will make it 🤘🙂

I’m glad ur covering this
Reviewers on Pitchfork, a reputable "review site" rarely seem to have any theory or instrument background. Not that that's a good thing. Fantano here knows more than most of them. Playing experience does help, but his point that it skews is totally valid. Trust the ear.
Yes thanks Fantano. I’ve been waiting for your opinion on this topic even well before Lizzo’s tweets. I’ve trying to pursue a career in journalism for such a long time and especially in music. But was always hesitant because I worried that no one would take my work seriously and that I’d have 0 credibility to write about music. Nervous that know one would care what I had to say. Especially having friends asking my how I can do this without ever making any kind of music. So I quit my efforts to pursue that goal and went into other things I had no joy in. Glad to say I decided to get back into something I’ve been wanting to do since middle school
Sorry for the long pointless comment 😅 it’s just a topic that’s been bugging me for a while
It’s just something that stressed me out for a long time and made me not want to pursue those dreams anymore. So to see you talk about it helps give me some motivation to get back to it
I'd love to see you make a new album though. I mean, how long has it been since Taiga?
True, you can tell if it is good or not but knowing why it is is vastly important.
"food doesn't scream."
Are you sure, MELON?
Obviously you don’t have to make music to review it. However, it is easier to miss what makes certain music great, especially in unfamiliar genres, if you don’t have a basic understanding of how its made.
I have rarely, if ever, seen fantano talk about sound design, but any musicians knows there is a big difference between completely sample based music that utilizes whole samples, and an electronic artists who creates every single sound in the song from scratch. You are basically inventing new instruments. Someone who has never made a synth will find it hard to quantify the value of great sound design.
Coming in 2 years later… I like this video. What do you think of Rick Beato’s channel then? I love both of you and you review things from your own different angles/perspectives.
I already know this is probably a response to Lizzo’s tweet

That's almost as stupid as saying that you need to make reviews to be a reviewer

Hmmm. Anthony- wanna know what you think of Caustic Crush- A Jury Of His Peers. Aggressive, tapey, distorted, and occasionally thoughtful sample-free beats. Kinda different.
Great video Anthony but when is the second Taiga album dropping?
Only time I see people react that way is if they are personally offended and trying to cope or make a rebuttal to someone. When someone says WELL I BET YOU CAN'T DO BETTER I feel tempted to tell them to eat shit.
"you have to be a dentist to become the best teeth in the game!"
Knowing the work that goes into making music does make it more enjoyable no matter the genre.. that’s just a fact of life: having knowledge of a topic will make the topic more intriguing and.. understandable 😂
That argument is pretty dumb but it certainly helps if you make music. Your opnion isn't worth less if you don't make music though.
However, what does make me cringe a lot of times is when critics try to review electronic music and they decribe sections as ''random electronic noises'' or call everything techno. Like, could you do some research. It takes 5 seconds to find out what an 808 or a hihat is.
Thank you, Melon. This topic is one of my biggest pet peeves. It's right next to ''I listened to ( Insert Musician Here ) before it ended up in a movie OST'' We've all discovered new music through movies, tv shows, video games etc. It's very hypocritical
The art of critiquing is very underrated. Being able to communicate effectively what you think about an album (or other piece of art) is quite hard to do imo.
thank you for stating facts mr. melon. bless you
Have you ever reviewed vocaloid or specifically songs by kikou? The most recent one is really experimental but the rest arent like that. "Love me love me love me" is my favorite kikou song.
Suprised by your openness to kyarypamyupamyu and actual enjoyment of it so id like to hear that for some other stuff.
Making music helps you to understand music more, as well as music theory, so you can learn how to critique music in general. The key factor there is “understanding music”, learning how to actually play music does lean you closer to that factor so you know what you’re talking about.
Even if you can’t play music, what matters is you know how to READ music (instrument tabs, chord structures, time signatures) besides deciphering the lyrics and their meaning, how tone and pitch is played in a song, and importantly what the artist is speaking about through his or her songs.
As long as you understand all those factors, then you know how to study good music and how to critique music in general and which are good or bad.
I definately agree. I like to think Im good at writing music and playing guitar but I cant tell if an albums good or not. Well at least I cant communicate it that well. I rely on looking at wiki pages to see if an albums good or not which is a bad tactic if your listening to new albums all the time to get ideas for your songs. Unless the albums piss poor like st. anger It becomes grey for me. I just cant tell.
That is dumb. It's subjective, if it's a grey area, boom it's a grey area, That's your opinion. You don't have to look at validation to know something sucks or is awesome.
musings on the matter, from an artist:
all perception of art is subjective...so it doesn't matter if the critic is accomplished in the medium that is in consideration.....however, Hemingway said it best "critics are men that watch a battle from a high place, and then come down and shoot the survivors". it's easy to rip someone's life apart, and satisfying to call bullshit on marketing ploys and industry plants posing for authenticity.....
however it might not be the critic's job to be the artist, at the end of the day the critic is nothing more than a small dog. bark bark bark....not too much bite, and overall easy to punt into the next county. the assertion of proficiency the least and accomplished at best just sinks the dogs bite deeper.
Music critics apparently don't like it when people criticize how music criticism is done...maybe they feel that you can't criticize music critics unless you're a music critic yourself?
I’m an avid movie critic, I write reviews sometimes on movie websites and I would always get one fanboy replying to me about how I don’t make blockbuster films so that somehow invalidates my opinion.
"They are in their bedrooms, diddling away-" PAUSE.
Tbf, you could probably afford to be at least a little bit more technical. It's nice if A music review says more than "hello, this record exists, i like the rice, I didn't like the peas. The broccoli sounded like that other record's sauerkraut", etc. Something a little more involved than opinions about aspects someone's likely going notice on first listen. More about the music, less about what listening to it is like, if that makes sense.
My friend literally made this argument to me. Whataboutism isn’t a valid argument either
Where is FISHING FOR FISHIES MELON?????????
You don't have to be an actor or director to talk about film, a chef to talk about food, or an athlete to talk about sport. Good, well formed opinions can exist with or without experience. Glad you're standing by that.
Great video. True. I play an instrument and have tried diff. instruments, I know something about music (+theory) but that is not a requirement. I'm quite bad at drawing too.
Honestly reviewing music is one of those rare jobs like professional poker players where you are contributing literally nothing to society (not that that's a bad thing)
Actually he saves a lot of peoples time to dive in records they otherwise wouldn't care about or havent heard. You cannot hear all the music out there in your lifetime
loving the shirt fantano
You just gotta understand music to review it. Like being in a band then you'll receive a basic firm of music theory. That's all ya need.
Shout out to that Tiaga video that you can be seen playing in
...and the cooking/chef analogy was spot on. I don’t have to know how to make ice cream to know if a scoop sucks
That’s like saying you gotta be a writer to criticize comics
"you've got to be an architect to like a skyscraper"
"you've got to be a fisher to like fish"
"you've got to be a youtuber to like a frikkkin' video"
Yes, that is exactly what it's like. So mutch like it in fact that most people who think one of these think the other as well. So I think you need a less perfect comparison like the ones mentioned by Pietro Ferrari above me. They aren't exact one to one comparisons but illustrate the problem with this idea better.
"You've gotta know to cook to tell the chef your steak is raw"
Lmfao you play the bass most musicians know that’s like being a kicker in football
You gotta make terrible life decisions to review terrible life decisions
true though
"they're in their bedrooms, diddling on whatever it is they play".
