TLC's Lisa Left Eye Lopes brought the adolescent Rap duo Illegal to Dallas Austin. He signed the group to his Rowdy Records and put Jamal and Malik in the studio with legends. However, things started to go wrong with Illegal when the guys stayed in California and started rolling with Suge Knight's Death Row Records. Dallas details flying to L.A. to meet with Suge and attempt to retrieve the guys after a half-million dollar investment from Clive Davis and Arista. Dallas Austin recalls the story in this clip from part 2 of his Questlove Supreme interview.

I'm Migit from Jena-si-qua. (LEFT EYE PRODUCTIONS) along with Blaque..And we and Jamal lived with Lisa(Left Eye) in Marietta Ga....on Windy Hill Rd. He was a little bad azz. When I saw him at Lisa's funeral he looked like he was doing bad. Hope he's OK. That's like our little brother...Lisa got him from Philly.
illegal was dope...Malik had the illest flow for a kid his age and he had a verse on a song from Doggystyle but Mally G ended up really stepping his game up ..." Fades Em All" was incredible ...in fact, his debut album was solid...Def Squad was a great fit for him!
You're right! He was on the song Pump, Pump on Doggystyle
Questlove, start doing interviews by yourself, for some reason your side host is getting on my nerves with their 2 cents!
@siqaraminmassaquoi1999 they were on too shorts thangs change from cocktails they had that many connections in the industry
I remember running into Jamal downtown Atlanta and buying his solo CD I was so excited to meet a Def Squad member impersonal Illegal should've had a lot more success !
I saw Jamal about 6 months ago on Jimmy Carter....fresh out of jail...with a handful of Philly mixtapes.....i respect dude, still hustling, pushing, ain't asking nobody for nothing. Showed love.
Jamal’s last chance no breaks album is majorly slept on..
Shout out to Illegal definitely a part of the 90’s fabric of hip hop 🏆
Hershey Loc was on Too $hort's "Things Change" from the Cocktails album and Monica's "Like This, Like That"
Jamal was on things chande too
@@NatHenrickClarke sure was
I totally forgot that was him on Monica's song but I can still recite the verse. 😅
He was Snoop and Tha Dogg Pound albums too, he even had solo song Malik Goes On but it didn’t get much play.
Mr Malik Hershey loc DPG and Jamal in the Def Squad with the Eric sermon, Redman and Keith Murray 🔥
Bruh, I lost it when he got to Malik saying he didn't even know Jamal and that he said he had to sleep with one eye open...... that's wild.
I need this story in animation.. ASAP!!!! 🤣🤣
Malik had arguably the best verse on Doggystyle...That lil nigga was cold...
Facts! What happened to that dude
Illegal doesn't get enough credit. Shout to Dallas Austin Jamal, and Malik. Their album was dope. Hip Hop in the purest form. I also heard somewhere that Biggie wanted Jamal in the Junior Mafia group and Malik was on death row with Pac and Dogg Pound.
Jamal was on that first Junior Mafia album. Never knew Biggie wanted to recruit him tho. Makes sense.
Jamal ended up with Def Squad...Erick Sermon and Redman had him spitting flames over their dope instrumentals...I heard he went to college and ended up getting a 9 to 5 mean while Malik ended up...going back and forth to jail or serving time at a state pen!
@@MichaelBrown-ti1un I heard about Big wanting to recruit a few dudes. He was really about to get his mogul on.
@@twocents6951he was definitely bout to leave Puff and Puff knew it.
Back in the Day was the hardest shit they put out. I remember Jamal popped up on some cbs drama series and Malik was on the Doggpound album. That's about all I remember on them. Can't believe they won a billboard award over hip hop hooray. 🤦🏾♂️
There First Album The Untold Truth CD Is So Underrated And Slept On By People That Whole Album Was Dope
Man...Illegal basically sabotaged their own career, SMH.
They were children.
@@plantbasedministries9233 Adina Howard also sabotaged her career at a record label. She wasn't a child - she was in her mid 20's.
Do you know how young they were at the time lmao
This episode was great. It could have gone another hour, easily.
It's crazy...I remember the ATL episode, of Yo MTV Raps...still got it, on tape...The Dungeon Family, Too Short and Dallas talking about Illegal...they were playing the Jamal, Instrumental during the interview! Crazy how time flies!
I remember that episode too, you should upload to YT, the whole episode. I know I ain't seen it since the mid 90's!
@@lexico8165 It's on vhs, in storage...I just moved, you got my word though...if I find it, I'll convert it and do just that 💪🏼💯
@@dnachistatrax1029 Much respect!
*Hersey Loc was signed to E-40 Sic Wit It Records too. His album cover was on the back of one of E-40 albums but it was never released.*
He was mentioned in this interview?
I saw Jamal a few months ago in ATL. He looked to be in bad, bad shape. I hope he gets his self together.
He left Philly and lives in the ATL? You sure it was him? Bad shape like drugs?
Mall be all over he be in Erie from time to time he'll bounce back he always been like that
Jamal was the first to go solo right?
@@Ah-ed6ie
I just remember Malik being on the last track of the Doggystyle album.
@@Stanlayy-em4fk He was also on Warren G's Whats Next and We Want Yo Hands Up
Crazy story lol. Whatever happened to Malik aka Lil' Hershey Loc? Seems like he was with the Dogg Pound, then Warren G, then we never heard from him again. Had verses on Doggystyle, Regulate: G-Funk Era, Dogg Food and Like This and Like That with Monica, a big commercial hit, and nothing ever happened with his career afterwards.
Yo this is very informative and crazy. D. Austin a great story teller.
Excellent interview. So much stuff I had no clue about. No disrespect although I gotta say this. I wish Laiya would tone it down just a bit. There are times where she interrupts the guest unnecessarily and they aren't able to complete their point. I dig the conversational atmosphere of these interviews although at times there can be a bit too much cross talk, especially when some are having a fan moment and forget that there are thousands of other people listening to this interview. Although I can appreciate the difficulties in striking a good balance with conversational tones and pure interview style, it's not easy although there is room for improvement and a bit of restraint regarding hosts chiming in loudly and unnecessarily.
DAMN, Illegal fucked up a perfect opportunity, SMH!!! 🤦🏾♂️ And Malik is my lil homie from middle school, hope all is well with him...✌🏿
Jamal was a beast hope he releases more heat
Keep it real yo gotta keep it real yo that was a dope track Jamal put out in 95
I remember When illegal won that award, I was scratching my head because I thought Chief Rocka would've won
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
This was an amazing story. Yo! Dallas, you're a fantastic storyteller. You need to give us some more gems like these.
Oh now i see how malik got those dope features with snoop and warren g...Illegal would have been bigger than kriss kross if they had worked with deathrow imo
Fades ‘‘em all was a classic!
I remember Malik on Warren G first album
And snoops
@@trevarid yep
He was on Dogg Food too. Crazy he never blew. He had verses on like 3-4 of the most important west coast albums in the '90s
L.
Still bang 🎶 Illegal & Jamal to this day ✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾
Illegal was the RAWEST kid's group ever!!!
You know I used to wonder why this group illegal came out of nowhere caught people's attention disappeared and the next thing you know you see malik on the Southside riders wothE-40 and B-Legit with the little promo add in the album flap about Malik being on sick WID it records. Both these rappers was dope, but it seems like they got in their own way of making it in music you can have all the talent in the world and still come up short in this dirty game
Liela is so extra.
Too much
Ruins the show
Seriously..typical black woman...doesn't know how to let men lead ...always has to be the center of attention
3:25 "I gotta go get the kids from where?" 🤣😂😂😀
Back in the day when I was a teenager my favorite from dem
That lil wiz tune was on point 4:53
I always thought Illegal was gonna be the next EPMD
I was living with Illegal when they came out to the West Coast we were in the Valley… them niggas fought everyday!!!! Jamal banged Mansfield Crip and Malik banged Piru!!!
They were fighting eachother?
Ol girl toooo giggly
She adds absolutely no value.
This story was hilarious 😂. I always used to wonder how Malik got down with the dog pound
That’s Snoop Dogg’s cousin on his southern side of the family
Quest looks like Mr. T, its a beautiful thing
What ever happened to that group "Posse"? They were from the 5th Ward and discovered by the Geto Boyz. They had this one song called, Bring It On.
I always wondered what happened, that red tape was my shit! And Malik from the 803
Wow…swear I remember those dudes from back in the day
Malik was raw af . I wonder whatever happened to him.
He’s back in South Carolina from what I’ve heard
He supposed to be on Diamond D's next diampiece album.
Last time saw him, I think was decades ago in a Monica video....its weird when talented people just disappear, or don't the shine they deserve
Mannnn she needs to allow people to talk mannn she’s over doing it smh
Malik was the truth with Warren g on so many ways and the one with Snoop
It's crazy when you think how talented they must have been to be impressing pople like Busta, Erick Sermon, Dre, Snoop, Warren G AT 12 OR 13 YEARS OLD
I love y'all talk about blood from Roots you one of my favorite MCS ever I'm from Pacoima California I don't play no games all of the whatever you doing
Speak English.
I remember the story was that Malik was snoops or kurupts cousin
The boys were very close to Lisa use to call her mom even lived with her. Jamal recently did an interview with Highly Dishfunctional show.
In the beginning Malik was with Treach then Lisa put him with Jamal. Jamal knew Lisa longer and was closer to her in the beginning. They are both from Philly.
Sounds like adults just being adults and allowing some kids to be rewarded for acting a damn fool as long as it sells....
Enabling at its finest and worse.
Dallas sounds like Dennis Rodman.
Wasn't Malik Snoop's cousin?
Is malik on warren g album the same malik on Monica's " like this and like that?
I smoked weed with Jamal at Eric Sermon rim shop in the studio in the basement at the rim shop on Peachtree my cousin was getting rims for Lexus. Oh yeah two short was there also
Mark curry & G Rim Shop
She irritating lol
She just happy to be there
thats that female cackling energy
@@juliocortez5209it has no place on this platform

I think Malik was signed with Sic Wit It a a point & time.
GREAT Story. i'm Dallas Age & even though they were Kids i Really liked the young Dude Jamal & had His Single "Who wants 2 Fk wit Jamal" & Always wondered what happened.

Now who the f wanna see Jamal i fades em all!
Jamal has been living Between Erie Pennsylvania and Atlanta since around 1999 that’s why he’s been on Gully Tv so much , Jamal Stole a bag out of Suge Knight Limousine in the bag was a camcorder & some tapes on it was Blade activity with Some big Name Black Celebrities Suge was extorting They wanted to Kill Jamal Mark Curry was in the middle of that situation. Mal is similar to Black Rob After living a certain way so long AINT no coming back, 😢
Why was Suge even rolling around in a Limo with gay celebrity porn?

What happen to Illegal
Another of these crazy Billboard awards stories. I now there is “prestige” and such with certain awards but I wish 1 nominee would win an award and just sh** on the awards show live.
“Like yeah its no grammy but uhh… thanx”
Illegal The Greats .Ain't Nothing About Them Chris/Cross Peace.
Malik dusted Warren G on What's Next. He pulled curtain back on them wack lyrics
What's n-x-e-t
@@CinqueMalcolm As I.. Flicks to tha flex... what's next. 🤣🤣🤣😅
I thought Eric Sermon signed them?
Erick worked with them under Dallas first, then when Jamal went solo, he started working with the Def Squad and became an affiliate...his solo album was still released by Rowdy Records tho
I think Malik started going by chocolate didn't he
Hershey Loc
Kriss kross stole illegal style
Lil wayne took malik style
Jamals grandmother put roots on Malik?? Was she a Manbo?
I think she put roots on Jamal too that’s why both them niggas (Lil Malik & Jamal) got strung out on sherm for a looooooong ass time they both just kinda (Jamal still usin sometimes you can tell by his interview) got clean
dude was a kid himself back then what the hell he talking bout.......he is 53 Jamal is 44..both born in the 70s he was 19 tbey were 11 and 12 all of em were lil n's ..he talking like he was a grown man back then😂😂😂😂😂
He was. He already had platinum hits and his own imprint. Tf you talking about. 20 and 12 is the difference between a boy a man.
@@CinqueMalcolm Then Kriss Kross at 12 and 13 were also MEN, right ? and more then him since they got their Platinum earlier.Sounds ridicilous huh?....Neurobiologically, adulthood starts no earlier then 28yrs, provided you invested in emotional control. Both 12 and 20yr olds are boys , ones a small boy, the other a big boi.
FYI….. I believe that he is lying….Boy got a story to tell he knows about secrets No hate he got some stuff to say
He held back a lot
Did Malik end up being on some gay shit?…..I heard that rumor back in the day
Man I was waiting to see if anyone else heard that. All his verses were fire. Crazy
Yeah he had pic of him on his Instagram page posing with his ass out
