Building a floating boardwalk and dock through a beautiful bog for $5000

  • We bought a "lake" cottage in Wisconsin's Northwoods, but the lake wasn't very accessible. A dock guy quoted us over $20,000 to build one of those vinyl and metal monstrosities. Aside from not having the funds to pay for that, we were interested in something much more rustic - something that would fit with the nature-y vibes of the bog, and put us right in it. So we built our own, for only $5000, and in addition to providing endless lake fun for our friends, family, and guests, it likely added tens of thousands of dollars to the value of our cottage.
Many thanks to Mike with Kennedy Aerial Productions (www.kennedyaer...) for much of the drone footage (and for helping build the darn thing - that's him in the water with me).

Be gentle to the fragile ecosystem! Bogs and wetlands are a very important habitat at high risk due to development. The flora and fauna there is beautiful. A boardwalk is good to have the least impact. Anyway, looks like you have created a lovely oasis for your family to make a lot of happy memories. Was that a special drill to work underwater?

My background is in ecology. We have plans to study and film the bog in more detail. It's one of the highlights of the property for me.
Oh, and no that driver is not meant to go in the water, but it got the job done and it's still going.
