لطالما كانت الأفلام المصرية في طليعة السينما العربية، وعلى رأس الروّاد المشغوفين بها تألّق المخرج المصري يوسف شاهين. سيطرت أعماله على الأفلام العربية لأكثر من خمسة عقود. وكصوت مؤثّر في مصر الحديثة، هو بالنسبة للسينما العربية ما يمثلّه الروائي نجيب محفوظ، الحائز على جائزة نوبل، في الأدب العربي. مسيحي كاثوليكي، ولد لأسرة من الطبقة الوسطى، وكمعظم الأسر التي عاشت في الاسكندرية في تلك الفترة فقد كان هناك عدّة لغات يتمّ التحدّث بها في البيت. وعلى الرغم من انتمائه للطبقة المتوسّطة، كانت دراسته بمدارس خاصة منها كلية فيكتوريا، والتي حصل منها على الشهادة الثانوية. بعد إتمام دراسته في جامعة الاسكندرية، انتقل إلى الولايات المتحدة وأمضى سنتين في معهد پاسادينا المسرحي يدرس فنون المسرح.
Egyptian films have always been at the forefront of Arab cinema, and chief among their passionate practitioners is Egyptian director Youssef Chahine. His work has dominated Arabic films for more than five decades. As an influential voice of modern Egypt, he is to Arab cinema what the Nobel Laureate Naguib Mahfouz is to Arabic literature. Egyptian film director. A winner of the Cannes 50th Anniversary Award (for lifetime achievement), Chahine was credited with launching the career of actor Omar Sharif.
Although he was raised Catholic, he was not a believer in organized religion. If asked of his religion, he would state, "Egyptian". At home, the Chahines spoke five languages, which was common in cosmopolitan Alexandria at the time. At a young age, he knew what he wanted to become. He would stay under his bed and in his room for hours, picturing himself in the industry- whether in a projection theater, a cinema hall or a production company.
