I love all these modernizations/evolutions of styles ! The new west coast style is amazing! Same with west coast Pilsners ! Loving those!!

It’s been so long since “old school” hops were a thing. That now “new school” hops are almost “Old school” so let’s bring the classics back! Uncover that riddle of a sentence! Ha! Oh and give me more IBUs!

I wonder how the East Coast hazy breweries will evolve in the future like the West Coast guys are doing. Is there anything you can do to hazy beer to make them different? The WC has seen that evolution from the caramel malt town, super bitter, high IBU hoppy beers to the newer lighter malt bill, super fruity hop forward IPA, and the new-ish WC Pils. There are still plenty of old school bitter IPAs out here in CA, but having that new school option is fun. What can the East Coast do to change/progress? Or do haze hoes even care about change?

Slice started the trend in my humble opinion.

I think it’s a question of brewing style and what we consider new school hops? Like I know you said you like your hazies with a bit of bitterness, so not necessarily fruit juice in a glass with a shot of vodka! I agree! Is Old School straight C hops? I just brewed a DIPA using Mosaic, Amarillo and CTZ. +100 IBU’s but still a punch of fruit notes, is this New School?

I've had a few of these "modern or new school: westies. They were overall tasty and well made, but they are still too focused on big juice, lower bitterness, and very lacking on the pine. I long for the old days of dank piney palate wreckers. I am burnt out and sick of the fruit / juice bombs with no balanced bitterness. But that's just my opinion on the matter.

Speaking of …did you ever have Palate Wrecker from Green Flash? Lol Agree with you on juice bombs.

Yes, enjoyed it not the wrecker i was expecting, but compared to most today it would seem very forward in the bittering hops profile. Green Flash's West Coast is still a bench mark for me when comparing westies. The great return from Hardywoods was a fantastic westie.

I survived the IBU Wars as well! 😂 Devil Dancer/Founders is the most bitter beer I’ve ever had. Wow. It has been retired. My go to West Coast IPA is Head Hunter/Fat Head. When it is fresh it is unbeatable. We are Day 4 of the Heat Dome in Toledo … high 90F and over 100 “feel like” temps. Yuck. Hope you are able to get Bruno a walk early morning or later evening. Another off-center comment …back in the day, for me, Arrogant Bastard seemed so bitter. But in a good way. I wonder if our palates get acclimated to IBU levels over the years? I haven’t had AB in years, but I bet it would seem tame now.

@@PABrewNews Green Flash disappeared from my market about 6-7 years ago. I was disappointed as I really liked their lineup. As did Port Brewing (Pizza Port?) … their Shark Attack Red IPA was awesome.

The good news, is there are plenty of piny, dank, bitter WCIPA out here still :)

garbage compared to the old bitter piney west coast IPAs. ..... these new ones are not bitter or offensive at all.
