I would have liked to see more of the finer carving. It was just rough shaping...and then a cut, and suddenly the figure was ready.

It sounds silly, but I've never even thought about drawing what I'm going to carve onto the wood first. I usually use random pieces of wood fallen from trees, or offcuts from projects. . . I have, and often use my planer and jointer, so I have no excuse really, just never thought of it.

Here in New Zealand the Maori wood carvers never blow shavings off the carving. They believe it brings bad Mana (luck)

Very cool. For your next video, however, I'd suggest making it longer, and instead of music let us hear the carving and let the carvers explain as they does it. There are numerous examples on UA-cam of traditional Japanese craftsmen doing so. Of course translating this would take longer, but it would make the video better I think. Also, (to explain another comment that was complaining about it) the pronunciation of Japanese words in this video was a little poor... might want to improve that.

If you’re talking about balsa wood (which is really foamy, but is still wood), then usually at your local hardware store in the craft-type section. At least that’s in AU and the US (not sure where you’re from). Depends on the dimensions you need. Googling balsa wood near you should do the trick

Superglue works if you can find the part you didn't mean to cut off. That's my problem. A lot of times, I can't find the part I didn't mean to cut off among the rest of the wood I already carved off. But, if you can manage to salvage that piece, superglue does wonders.

Nice, great work. Never really carved wood just stone I use two colors for mine usually a blue and red to mark my lines the blue is my safe line and red is the actual line ,learned from being too inpatient that I cant put back once it's gone so once I get to the blue it's time to take my time.

Around here there alot of kachina carvers or in the native art world Anyway, they tend to use cottonwood roots if I do some stuff in wood I'll prolly go with some harder stuff like cedar or juniper.

Its hard for me to consider these religious carvers "artists". This is more of a factory producing a product. I feel the same about those Italian "artists" that just carve Jesus. If I just carved Abraham Lincoln 10,000 times Am I a sculptor or a reproducer, or just a factory?
