Johnnie Ray was born January 10, 1927, in Hopewell, Oregon, to parents Elmer and Hazel (Simkins) Ray.[5] Along with older sister Elma, Ray spent part of his childhood on a farm in Dallas, Oregon and attended grade school there. The family later moved to Portland, Oregon, where Ray attended high school. At age 13, Ray became deaf in his left ear following a mishap that occurred during a Boy Scout "blanket toss." In later years, Ray performed wearing a hearing aid. Surgery performed in 1958 left him almost completely deaf in both ears, although hearing aids helped his condition.

I fall asleep to wml episodes every night. I fell asleep Sunday nights watching it when I was a child. I loved everything about the show from the introductions to seeing the womens ' dresses, the sharp way the regulars played the game, the wit, John daly's hosting style and intelligence, how informed everyone seemed to be about current events, the way the audience laughed when the contestant 's occupation had anything to do with women's undergarments. I even loved when the panel said goodnight to one another. Some older game shows have made brief comebacks but I don't think they could possibly do wml justice. Thankfully there are over eight hundred episodes to watch.
He released many excellent songs. Looks like he was ready to really let loose throughout this one! Unforgettable for anyone who remembers him, or perhaps who is introduced to him. Think my favorite is '"Look Homeward, Angel".
That was by far my favorite song when I was younger. My former husband and I were talking the other day and the subject of this song came up. I loved Johnnie Ray ♥️⚜️♥️
The last thing I remember her doing was playing Henry Fonda's wife on the short-lived ABC comedy-drama "The Smith Family" in the early '70s. The show focused on the working and home life of a cop; one of the kids on the show was played by Ron Howard, somewhere in time between "The Andy Griffith Show" and "Happy Days."
@@bobthetvfan, yep, just like the FAMILY ON PRIMROSE LANE.. I think twas the only time Henry Fonda did a TV show as a series regular. Darleen Carr who was in the SOUND OF MUSIC along with her late sis CHARMIAN C., played the daughter. She was cute as hell. I being a teen had a crush on her, lol..
thanx for posting. I've never ever seen this episode before. RE: [ 0:30 ] the capitol letters WML title at the beginning of live picture --- Apparently they were getting ready for the new animated introduction. Interesting to see bandleader-actor Ozzie Nelson as himself in something other than the very very long-running "Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet" on both radio and TV. He did well that night, too. WML should have booked him on more often. I hadn't heard of Miss Blair. Actress she is. Appeared in Sid Caesar's comedy hour and in a current movie. Years later, she co-starred with Henry Fonda in a favorite 1970s sitcom "The Smith Family" with Ronny Howard.
Janet Blair also performed frequently as a singer at some of the top clubs. Her Wikipedia bio mentions her performing at the Empire Room at the Waldorf Astoria in New York. Ironically that was the club where Johnnie Ray was performing at the time of this episode.
I haven't heard the term "CW" for radio for a long, long time. CW stood for "continuous wave" and required using a telegraph key for transmissions in Morse code and a receiver with an oscillator in it to hear the dots and dashes (also known as dits and dahs). CW as opposed to voice transmissions in AM (amplitude modulation) or FM (frequency modulation) or SSB (single sideband). So apparently, the first contestant had to communicate using his CW radio equipment via Morse code, because his voice-capable radio equipment failed.
Many years ago a motorist in Gastonia NC was saved by blowing SOS on his horn[Well, actually he mistakenly blew OSO: an S is 3 dots; an O is 3 dashes]. His car was off-the-road & not visible from it.
RE: Dorothy Kilgallen == of all people == asking if he is tall dark and handsome. Maybe he wasn't tall because he IS a dish, as they once said. God only knows. Would be interesting to know where this appearance fit into the Kilgallen-Ray . . . uh -- friendship.
soulierinvestments So true!! He was considerably younger too! She was 14 years older. Just checked the fascinating book “The Woman Who Knew Too Much” by Mark Shaw and by 1957 their affair was “torrid”! Despite Johnnie Ray being bisexual! But then Dorothy’s husband was too.
@@suetucker9264 Ray appeared as a Mystery Guest in 1954, the same year Dorothy gave birth to Kerry, who was rumored to have been fathered by Ray. So their relationship was already a few years old by this point.
Ozzie Nelson proved that he's really smart because he was able to figure out a contestant's line or occupation fairly quickly. I don't think that he's been on the panel very often.
He lived in the Los Angeles area, where he filmed his popular TV series. This program was produced in New York, so that would account for his rare appearances on the panel.
I'm impressed that Ozzie figured out the first contestant flew in a balloon -- and as soon as Ozzie established that, Bennett chimed in about the man who flew up 18 miles, breaking all records. I still don't know what Ozzie's profession on "Ozzie & Harriet" was supposed to be -- he was the father of the Nelson boys and Harriet's wife, but he seemed to be home all the time wearing a cardigan sweater with occasional trips down to the "malt shop" for milk shakes or ice cream. He was never shown as someone who had a job on that sitcom. (At least Robert Young as Jim Anderson on "Father Knows Best" was supposed to be an insurance agent and was shown to come home from work each night.) Of course, in real life, before Ozzie & Harriet had a radio sitcom followed by a TV sticom, Ozzie Nelson was a bandleader and Harriet Hilliard was the featured singer with Ozzies band -- and they got married as a result of that musical and professional relationship.
In the movie "Here Come the Nelsons" that doubled as the pilot for the TV Series (to see how well the other family members could transition from radio to TV), Ozzie plays an advertising executive assigned to a campaign promoting women's underwear.
😂In the pilot movie for the television series titled "Here Come the Nelsons", Ozzie sold insurance. No other reference to his job was ever mentioned throughout the fourteen year run of the series. 😅
19:30 i don't get why Johnnie Ray answered NO about primarily making records (??) that's how i remember him (as did Dexy's Midnight Runners) "Poor old Johnny Ray Sounded sad upon the radio moved a million hearts in mono Our mothers cried Sang along Who'd blame them?"
Ray was one of the top recording artists of the period, with "Just Walking in the Rain" a huge hit the prior year (after many 1950's hits before it), so it would have been fair to say "Yes" when asked he was primarily a recording artist (or at least have John mention it was a strong area of identification with the guest), but dodgy responses often rule the day with the mystery guests.
I think John was purposely helping Johnnie Ray in answering the questions because of his deafness. Especially the one where Dorothy asked him if he played a musical instrument and John interceded not really asking Johnnie Ray the question again but just trying toThrow Dorothy off the track by asking if she meant that he played a musical instrument as his main means of employment as a performer.
@lisahinton9682 OK, so nobody has come forward with DNA profiles that could confirm or disprove the rumor. No one has come forward with Dorothy’s husband Dick’s DNA profile, either. No one has provided a video or audio-recorded eyewitness account of someone saying, “The rumor is hogwash. Dick Kollmar is indeed Kerry’s dad. Dorothy and Dick slept together regularly in 1953.” No one has provided such statements from an eyewitness. For a few years before Lee Israel’s 2014 death, poor health kept her away from UA-cam comments and social media. She could have commented on the possible persistence of the rumor throughout the 1970s. That was when she worked on her Kilgallen book. Kerry himself has said nothing publicly about his mother or Dick Kollmar since the early 1990s. Kerry Facebooks occasionally, and blocks people who ask him questions that makes him uncomfortable. That does not tell us what he believes about his dad’s identity.
Sadly, he had to hide his bisexuality from the public and suffered from alcoholism. His premature passing at the age of only 63 was due to liver failure, caused by his years of heavy drinking.
What Janet Blair said at the end about replacing Arlene was exactly what Kitty Carlisle said a few years later when replacing Dorothy..... Sorry if others have commented the same I scanned comments briefly but didn't see anyone....
Johnny Ray and Dorothy had a Passionate Relationship said to have resulted in a son. Her life ended in such tragic circumstances and the gov in the middle of it - I hope they Lived with Great Love and Happiness. ...and I know the truth will emerge as she would desire.
Ok, I'm so confused. You are the second person I've seen on here to suggest that Kerry wasn't Richard Kollmar's biological son. I really would like to know where this information is coming from. I've read Lee Israel's biography on Dorothy and there was nothing in that book to suggest that. Besides, adult Kerry is the spitting image of Richard Kollmar.
Not everyone was nice back then. If they were, the jails and the prisons would have stood empty. All thru history there have been people who were nice and some not nice. And it is still that way today.
Too bad the person(s) that murdered Dorothy Kilgallen were never brought to justice on earth. God was/is the final judge and jury. She was a very talented journalist and beautiful lady.
Ozzie and his wife enjoyed many years of fame in the music field. Looking at the date of this show, he was about to pass the torch to his youngest son by the end of the year.
All the contestants had beautiful handwriting . Most people did back then. I studied Palmer in 4th grade in 1957 . Kids now dont even get taught the correct way to hold a pencil , and many of them can't read cursive !
I just watched a long video on UA-cam, where the author of the book "The Reporter Who Knew Too Much" claims that Johnny Ray had an affair with Dorothy Kilgallen, and was the father of her child.
I've seen the situation in previous episodes. I wonder if the guest panelist wasn't someone they brought in at the last minute because the guest panelist original scheduled couldn't appear for some reason and they didn't have a name plate ready for the last-minute guest panelist, thus requiring them to have no name plates at all. I've noticed that there wasn't a "Mr. Daly" name plate, either -- but I don't think I've seen one for him for a while, though I could be wrong about that.
Joseph Kittinger died a couple weeks ago at age 94. Most recently, Kittinger advised Felix Baumgartner on Baumgartner's October 14, 2012, free-fall from 128,100 feet
12:19 I like the way the female contestant said "Yes". She sounded like a duck. The final contestant had the LONGEST eyebrows I've even seen on anyone.
Johnnie Ray's relationship with Dorothy Kilgallen produced her youngest child Kerry Kollmar, whom her husband Richard Kollmar disowned after Kilgallen's death in 1965.
So Dorothy had an affair with Johnnie Ray? And he was the biological father of her son Kerry? Well, he is 14 years younger than her so I guess his youth must have been a factor in her adultery?
Janet Blair was a big band singer who is today best remembered for playing Rosalind Russell's sister in My Sister Eileen (1942) and Rita Hayworth's best friend in Tonight and Every Night (1945).
The emphatic "NO!" from Johnnie Ray when asked if he had a wife was fun :). Am I misremembering or, in his previous appearance, did he sign in with his left hand? (Here it was a right-handed sign-in.) It's a thing I often notice on this show since I am left-handed.....
Turns out that perfumed rice is not that unusual, just the application that is different. There are several perfumed, or fragrant rices in Asian dishes, and possibly middle Eastern. The wedding application is unusual, and does not seem common today.
No, what usually happens in "America" is we throw wild bird feed instead of rice. Most birds have a hard-time digesting rice. The other good thing about it is within another half-hour or so its all gone and cleaned up. The birds love it.
The past many years, the trend is to have small plastic bottles shaped like wedding cakes or bells or bouquets that hold bubble-making liquid and small oval wands as the lids. When brides and grooms exit the church/venue on their way to the "get away vehicles," guest shower them with hundreds of shimmering bubbles. It's lovely and requires no clean up.

Look closely and you'll see it's an earpiece with a wire heading out toward the back which no doubt connecting to a small box in his shirt pocket -- that's how hearing aids were configured in 1957. The kind that fits behind in the ear hadn't been invented yet and the all-in-the-ear kind were even farther in the future. Same kind of earpiece we used back in the day to listen to transistor radios when we didn't want to bother anyone else around.
maynardsmoreland He was on the show once before and considering he was gay, I'm inclined to believe their relationship was platonic only but maybe not.
+Lava1964 And that's been confirmed elsewhere, as well. Sexual orientation isn't always as cut and dried as a lot of people think it is. I have no problem believing that theirs was not a purely platonic relationship regardless of Johnnie Ray being (at least primarily) gay.
Johnnie Ray was a gay friend of gay actor "Anthony" George..."Tony" George was from my home town and brother to school mates of mine. I was at their house when Tony played the demo for "Cry" for us. Of course, Johnnie could have been ACDC...but "long term affair" is a surprise.
Indeed. Sexual orientation is a preference, not a disfunction. If their relationship were sexual, then one could say Mr. Ray was a homosexual who had bisexual experiences or tendencies. In fact, do we know that Ms. Kilgallen was totally heterosexual? Sexuality was not discussed openly in those days.
Yes, and he reacted with great annoyance when anyone failed to spell his name Johnnie correctly. In that regard, he reminds me of Katharine Hepburn who was also fixated on the first name.

It wasnt rare to know about the atmosphere back then. It was part of everybody's science teaching in school. Most high school kids could answer questions like that. (not CW).
Thanks for that info. I think I first heard his songs on the TV series "Happy Days."
As of today, November 20, 2022, 🎈Col. Joseph Kittinger is still with us at the age of 94!! 🙋🏽♀️💕 Edit: Col. Joseph Kittinger unfortunately passed away on December 9, 2022 after battling lung cancer 😢 May you Rest In Peace in our Lord’s arms, Amen
It would be good if he was on the panel again in late 1960. He got the record for the highest parachute dive, held from 1960 to 2012.
What a wonderful man

Mr Ray was extremely popular in the 50s.
Wasn't familiar with Janet Blair before this. Beautiful lady.
Ozzie did great. I enjoyed seeing Johnnie Ray again, but it would have been cool if Ricky Nelson was the mystery guest.
My very thought. He was 17 then and wouldn't release his first song till the following month after this episode .
Johnnie Ray was more popular in England than in the US (one reason for the reference to the British group Dexy's Midnight Runners on here). He trademark was that he cried on stage while performing, leading to his nickname as the "Prince of Wails"
So true. After his popularity waned here in the US by the end of the 50s, he continued to be VERY popular in the UK and Australia.
He had a beautiful voice.
Dorothy thought he had a wonderful voice nd more. They had a well known affair. I do not know how Doroyjt did everything she did. She and her just and had a radio show over breakfast at their apartment 5 days a week and she had a Broadway column and she was killed chasing the JFK death conspiricy.
And by the way: Even if I do not make comments, I still keep watching all your uploaded videos almost every day (and if I miss one day, I watch four videos on the next day :) )
I fall asleep to wml episodes every night.
@@sophiemorrison9820 Some of my favorite moments on WML are watching the panel shake hands with the contestants and saying their goodbyes at the end.
I loved Johnnie Ray ♥️⚜️♥️
kokolanza: Are you thinking of Anthony Perkins in LOOK HOMEWARD ANGEL?
Did not know Janet Blair at all--she seemed like a very sunny personality.
Seems funny to see Johnnie Ray on the show. By the time this was on Dorothy and Johnnie’s son Kerry was 3 years old 🤫
You read those books about Dorothy ... having a long affair with Johnnie, as Dorothy's marriage was bland.
thanx for posting.
Regarding Contestant #1, how appropriate to have watched this episode inadvertently on Veteran's Day 2024. Thank you for your service, Captain.
Poor old Johnnie Ray
Sounded sad upon the radio
Moved a million hearts in mono
Our mothers cried
Sang along, who'd blame them?
Perhaps this was when they first met?
@@suetucker9264 Ray appeared as a Mystery Guest in 1954, the same year Dorothy gave birth to Kerry, who was rumored to have been fathered by Ray. So their relationship was already a few years old by this point.
He is a blonde.
What a handsome man!
Janet Blair was such a beautiful and talented actress. She should have been bigger.
She was no Hope Emerson (hubba hubba!) but Janet was indeed one truly lovely lady !!
Bennett has a lovely smile.and is quite handsome...
I like him.
He was no Huntz Hall, but Mr. Cerf was indeed one good looking chap.
(At least Robert Young as Jim Anderson on "Father Knows Best" was supposed to be an insurance agent and was shown to come home from work each night.) Of course, in real life, before Ozzie & Harriet had a radio sitcom followed by a TV sticom, Ozzie Nelson was a bandleader and Harriet Hilliard was the featured singer with Ozzies band -- and they got married as a result of that musical and professional relationship.
it's very easy... Ozzie's job was TCB... Taking Care of Business lol
They never did establish a job for him because he wanted it that way. He thought he would be more of an every type of family man.
His orofession was Bandleader
In the movie "Here Come the Nelsons" that doubled as the pilot for the TV Series (to see how well the other family members could transition from radio to TV), Ozzie plays an advertising executive assigned to a campaign promoting women's underwear.
😂In the pilot movie for the television series titled "Here Come the Nelsons", Ozzie sold insurance. No other reference to his job was ever mentioned throughout the fourteen year run of the series. 😅

i don't get why Johnnie Ray answered NO about primarily making records (??)
that's how i remember him (as did Dexy's Midnight Runners)
"Poor old Johnny Ray
Sounded sad upon the radio
moved a million hearts in mono
Our mothers cried
Sang along
Who'd blame them?"
He answered that way because he "primarily" appeared in nightclubs rather than making records.
@@thomasthompson6378 Thank you for clearing that up. I wondered the same thing.
@@thomasthompson6378 RIGHT, Thomas!
Wikipedia claims that Johnnie Ray was bisexual and that he and Dorothy Kilgallen were lovers and he fathered her third child.
Which is better: Black Amberols or Blue?
I have no idea who Johnny Ray was, but I do of course know he sounded sad upon the radio and broke a million hearts in mono.
If you read Mark Shaw's books on Dorothy, it is likely that she had Johnnie Ray's child - a boy - in 1954. wow.
Ricky nelson's brother Dave looks a lot like their Dad.
Indubitably. Ricky looked more like his mother, Harriet.
Wonder what Dorothy looked like with red hair? Hard to tell in black and white.
HOT!!HOT!!HOT!!
I didn't read her hair colored red as flattering to her. I preferred her brunette.
@@sophiemorrison9820 she is a very plain looking woman.
Agree, classy lady, but not a beauty.
This was after Dorothy gave birth to her son, Kerry, by Mr. Ray. Ray was good and had so much potential but lead a hard life.
Rumor about the son - no proof and no one is talking.
Ozzie Nelson was an amazing man ! Dont let me mention the dichotomy between Elvis Presley and Ricky Nelson .
Johnny Ray and Dorothy had a Passionate Relationship said to have resulted in a son.
Her life ended in such tragic circumstances and the gov in the middle of it - I hope they Lived with Great Love and Happiness.
...and I know the truth will emerge as she would desire.
Heaven help her husband if HE had've been on this episode
I wish someone would do a cold case investigation.

DNA can reveal the facts now.
In his 1954 appearance, Johnnie Ray signed with his left hand. In this appearance, he signed with his right hand.
Perhaps he was ambidextrous.
This is when people were nice.
Not everyone was nice back then. If they were, the jails and the prisons would have stood empty. All thru history there have been people who were nice and some not nice. And it is still that way today.
According to Wikipedia Col Kittenger is still alive ( age 92) as of Oct 24 2020. Amazing man🎈🇺🇸

Johnny Ray was sensational 👏🏾 see him in "There’s no business like Show Business"with Marilyn Monroe and Mitzi Gaynor, his voice was powerful!
Dorothy and Ray were romantically involved
Too bad the person(s) that murdered Dorothy Kilgallen were never brought to justice on earth. God was/is the final judge and jury. She was a very talented journalist and beautiful lady.
Janet Blair was really cute, elegant and charismatic woman. It is visible instantly in a moment when she walks in.
She was no Marie Dressler (be still my heart!) but Janet was indeed one lovely & talented lady!
Ozzie and his wife enjoyed many years of fame in the music field. Looking at the date of this show, he was about to pass the torch to his youngest son by the end of the year.
Poor old Johnnie Ray
All the contestants had beautiful handwriting . Most people did back then. I studied Palmer in 4th grade in 1957 . Kids now dont even get taught the correct way to hold a pencil , and many of them can't read cursive !
I just watched a long video on UA-cam, where the author of the book "The Reporter Who Knew Too Much" claims that Johnny Ray had an affair with Dorothy Kilgallen, and was the father of her child.

It sounded like Janet Blair said 'Thank you, Arlene' to Dorothy at the start!
Including a "thumb count" broadcasting innovator elevates this to the best panel they ever had.
I wonder why the panel didn't have name plaques.

I was wondering how long was Johnnie Ray's voice going to last with that voice disguise.
I have one of his records of his best songs.

Dorothy: did I wake up next to you this morning in your suite at the Waldorf-Astoria?
Johnnie Ray's relationship with Dorothy Kilgallen produced her youngest child Kerry Kollmar, whom her husband Richard Kollmar disowned after Kilgallen's death in 1965.
So Dorothy had an affair with Johnnie Ray? And he was the biological father of her son Kerry? Well, he is 14 years younger than her so I guess his youth must have been a factor in her adultery?
Is the 2nd contestant any relation to Martin Landau?
Janet Blair was a big band singer who is today best remembered for playing Rosalind Russell's sister in My Sister Eileen (1942) and Rita Hayworth's best friend in Tonight and Every Night (1945).
The emphatic "NO!" from Johnnie Ray when asked if he had a wife was fun :). Am I misremembering or, in his previous appearance, did he sign in with his left hand? (Here it was a right-handed sign-in.) It's a thing I often notice on this show since I am left-handed.....
Good catch! It was left-handed the first time (1954).
Just watched a documentary on Dorothy…Johnnie Ray was the father of her 3rd child
Knowing Johnny Ray's and Dorothy's relationship, do you think it was such a good idea to have had him on there? I bet her husband wasn't too thrilled!
Majority of people knew about their relationship 😊
It’s strange that so many people make the same comment as someone previously. Don’t they look first?
It's even worse on Facebook. Someone asks a question, and 200 people reply with the same answer.
Apparently not😅

The first thing I thought when I saw Miss Landau was she was a female body builder, then she turned out to be a lifeguard. Lol!
Perfumed rice to throw at weddings... it could only happend in America. :)
What's was in johnnies ear?
A hearing aid-- he was hearing impaired.
hearing impaired and a great singer. the first pop superstar of the 50's. totally changed singing. the first 'male' singer who expressed himself in the way that he did.
+Katie Hoffman Ray suffered permanent hearing damage after a boyhood accident at age 13 at a Boy Scout jamboree.
HE WAS PARTIALLY DEAF A HEARING AID
Miss Kilgallen and Mr. Ray had an affair for many years. I wonder if this was their first meeting?
maynardsmoreland He was on the show once before and considering he was gay, I'm inclined to believe their relationship was platonic only but maybe not.
+Amy Brown If you read Lee Israel's biography of Dorothy Kilgallen, the author declares it was more than platonic.
Wow... 9 days before I was born, this episode aired.
