Subject or the doer will always be a noun, i.e. name of a person, thing, animal, etc. However, every noun is not a subject (doer). Example. Rahul has gone to Jaipur. Here Rahul is doer (subject) and a noun. However, Jaipur is also a noun, but not subject.

Further, in sentence (a) the action or the verb is hope and the word ‘only’ is used to describe that word. Words which show the attributes of verb are called ‘adverbs’. I hope that makes it clear.
Not sure of which sentence you’re referring to. However, slowly shows the quality of an action, like “He walks slowly”. So, the action is walking and “slowly” is how tha action is being done. So, it should be an adverb.
