    In this video is the unboxing and in-depth review of the BRAND NEW (as of July 2020) Garmin Dezl OTR800 trucking gps.
    This is a very good unit and I recommend it.
    HOWEVER, do NOT blindly trust ANY truck specific gps to be 100% perfect and accurate. ALWAYS review your routes and cross reference them with your trucking atlas and Google maps (street view specifically)

    I have the DEZL 580. I like it, didn’t want the bigger 7”, found it unnecessary and obstructed view. Generally very good. I think the reputation is the Garmin is more durable than the Rand McNally. As with any GPS, always use intuition because sometimes it wants to take me on a wild journey. For example, in the Arkansas Ozarks it wanted to route me off of the main state highway across a bunch of little roads because the state highway had a few bridges that had a 78,000 limit and I have my Garmin set at 80,000 truck. I would have been on a route that was 100 miles longer and on bridges and roads not designed for a semi.
    Just be aware that these are only as good as the data that is available to them and often it isn’t current or correct. No doubt it is indispensable, but don’t always trust it blindly.

      Kirk Gibbs 💯 correct. I make mention of that in the description. They’ll all tell you to turn down a road you roll by, laugh, and say YEAH RIGHT! Preplanning is essential. I use Google maps and the atlas

      Tip... reset your vehicle weight to your actual weight. Garmin SHOULD have an input for both, but they don't. I don't ever recall seeing a sign telling me I can't take a road based on GVWR unless it's 5 tons or so. Usually (always in my experience) a higher weight restriction (26 ton bridge for example) is actual weight and not GVWR. Hope that helps.
      Been using a dezl770 for a few years now, this unit looks faster and appears to have several useful improvements. Cost/benefit analysis may not pan out though.

    Thanks for making such an informative review.
    It answered all my questions. Purchased OTR 800.
    I drive at night making deliveries to supermarkets in interior of BC. Finding your way into most of them is similar to been a contortionist! If entering wrong your up the creek big time...
    The ability to create routes, edit them and store them is great. 8 months later I'm not relying on memory to setup correct approach.
    More great tools are the traffic ahead, road closures and weather. In BC we have to contend with hwy 1 through Fraser Canyon, hwy 3 Crows Nest Pass and hwy 5 Coqahalla or the 'coke' as we call it.
    These highways are subject to frequent snow slides and rock slides. Combined with severe winter weather requiring frequent chaining up.
    Combining Google Maps, OTR 800 and weather media, provides excellent picture of route ahead.

      Put in the destination address then zoom into it (and/or use the street view feature) to figure out where a semi truck into it as well as see if there's a guard shack, fencing, etc. If your route takes you through a town, use street view to make sure you'll be able to make the turn (ESPECIALLY if it's a right turn out if the streets make is MAIN STREET)
      *Don't EVER use JUST Google maps for semi truck routing*

      Just curious what your biggest issue was with the 750? I’m beginning to take the lack of info I’ve come across as a red flag.

    • @craigh2275
      @craigh2275 4 роки тому +2

      Ed - I just finished 2 wk testing of the 750 and had tested the OTR 800 and Dezl 780 previously. I had to send my Overdryve Pro7 in for battery issues. I liked the 780 over the Pro 7, better lane guidance, louder volume, more warnings: RR, schools, red light cameras etc but adding pit stops was odd. On the OTR, software flow seems somewhat better but had downgraded some features. The distance to warnings like to RR, curves, etc has been removed. Red light cameras is now part of Up Next function, so you won’t have automatic warnings. Speakers downgraded to 2w. Why not keep the 3w, let the user adjust volume. Also on the OTR 8/10” you get mile marker, distance to destination, time, etc. The RM 750, takes some time playing with to add an address, called bookmarks now. When adding stops or planning route, initial distance info is generally off by 10-25%. It showed 611 but when plotted it was 797 with no alternative route. You can’t select remaining time to final now either, only time to next stop. However, you can go to route summary in order for it to calculate it. If you have several stops planned, it will show distance in between each stop. THEY all have weird quirks, some w easier workarounds. I finally got a RAM mount kit to try the OTR again in portrait so it overhangs the dash to have a clear unobstructed view while I wait on RM to return my Overdryve Pro 7, to see if make a final change.

    • @RushinTruckin
      @RushinTruckin  4 роки тому +2

      Great info, thanks! I’m onto the 750 now myself. The distance to final thing is my biggest annoyance with it as there’s plenty of real estate on that bottom bar to have it there. Overall, though, I’m liking the changes over the 740 and the Nav 1.0 software

I see reviews on the Rand Mcnally that it had routed them the wrong way so i guess from my standpoint these trucking gps shouldn’t trusted 100% but researching by using other tools (like google maps, truckers path app etc..) a bit before embarking on a route is the best bet in my opinion. • @maddoxinc1642
      @maddoxinc1642 4 роки тому +2

      I found this to be the most lacking is the routing. I often get taken the proper way to a pickup and when I go back home, the route will change completely and take me a way I would never. When I'm in my local region, I use my own judgement and take the roads that I know, often time shaving 10 or 15 mins off my trip if I were to take the GPS guidance.
      The ONLY benefit I can see to this new model is the mount. For anyone who's got the larger previous gen Dezl GPS, when its mounted on the windshield, it'll constantly tilt down with road bumps and I have to tilt it back up all the time. This has been the case out of the box, I bought mine brand new.
      The new one, at least the OTR800 has the ability to tighten the grip around the ball that rotates the mount which I wish mine had. I have to mount my GPS so low on the windshield so that it rests on the dash otherwise it'll tilt down in about five mins or faster if the road is bumpy..
      Otherwise, I would have absolutely no reason to buy the new one. The previous gen is nice with the rubber over-molding. The new one looks vulnerable and fragile. I don't need a tablet or a toy, I need a reliable GPS which the Dezl is but this new one offers nothing desirable.

      Agreed the 1000 is too big. One thing to think about with the one with a dash cam is you’re having to worry about 2 angles, the dash cam as well as the viewing angle and usability (being able to reach it without strain to look things up) of it. In order for the dash cam to see what’s needed to be seen, you’re limited in the placement of the unit. Just something to think about

      I use the Rand McNally 750 for my daily and it's done me really good as well. Either this Garmin or the 750 are my recommendation. They each have their quirks so it just comes down to which software and user interface you prefer (think of the Android vs iPhone debate)

  • @mrgcav

    Here is what you have not heard or been told.
    The OTR800 unit is designed for professionals and Truckers and only for the open road and not for city driving. I provide professional repair services to my clients. Garmin (or anybody) really does not make a GPS device for delivery drivers and service professionals and they should.
    TheOTR800 is not well suited to the daily driver commute type. The car mode is a joke.
    It is easy to use but its a lot to learn too.
    Voice command recognition is better but you can no longer rename the device and are stuck saying "OK Garmin ~~~~~"
    I had a DEZL 770 and then a DEZL780. I only "upgraded" because Garmin is famous for not supporting older models. and I wanted a larger screen.
    The older models Navigated better with more options. Shortest route, Fastest route, street only, and economy mixed route.
    This way I could chose to save on gas or save on trip time.
    The OTR800 does not do this. Its navigation is one minded and the route it chooses most of the time is not the most direct route. Nor can you choose an economy route. Plus you have no choice of what route you you get.
    Its navigation is far worse tan Google Maps. and Worse than my Dezl780, which was not perfect.
    The OTR800 wants to use only the fastest route and it loves freeways.
    Example:
    If you want to go east on to a destination a half mile away on the same street you are already driving east on and there is a freeway ramp miles north, south or west of your present location. The OTR800 will plot a course way out of the way to that on ramp, telling you to traverse ground you already covered.
    Just to get you in the freeway.
    It does not even consider most of the time that the best route is straight ahead unless it can not find an on ramp within its search radius.
    So you have to IGNORE the device your paid nearly a Grand for or use Google maps to find the address.
    Plus if you ignore it, it is gets very pushy, tells you are going in the wrong direction, to repeatedly make a U turn until you are within a quarter mile of your destination.
    THIS IS INSANE. So do not plan on saving any fuel.
    Now if you are in the open country and need the interstate as truckers do, it works great. But for local city driving, I would go back to my 780 if I could to save on gas.
    My other gripe is that it's OS is only Android 6. We in 2022 are on Android 12. So most modern apps will not run on it.
    Also WARNING:
    APPS Drive and Dezl can not be killed or shut off. They consume power and data constantly
    I do not recommend installing Drive app and Dezl app on any phone, until such a time as users have full control over the apps.
    For nowhere in the user agreement does it indicate these apps run 24/7 and can not be shut off.
    I think they are secretly collecting personal data.
    The apps really do not help me navigate. They are supposed to warn me of real time traffic and speed traps. This is yet to happen once, in the six months I have owned the OTR800.
    Last gripe is the on screen warnings and agreement you see EVERY time you boot up the device. Annoying and takes too long. Does not remember the last mode, Truck, Van, Car etc it was in either..
    The first thing a good GPS device should do when you turn it it on is show you a map of your present location and ask you where you want to go. Garmin does not think this is important.
    So Is it better than a 780. No not for my application.. It does find addresses and house numbers very accurately, better than the 780. But on several occasions it took me way out of the way and on several occasions had me drive in circles or drive to the wrong place THEN correct itself.
    Garmin should add back in the 780 economy features, retain last user settings and learn efficient practical routes from Google maps.
    mrgcav@gmail.com
    .

    I know based of reading comments you’re no longer with Knight, but I’m wanting to get into trucking and after tons of research for starter companies, Knight seems to be the one where drivers get treated with the most respect. Not to mention they mention family as number one. I want to run refrigerated and since I’m in Atlanta, I should make decent money. So besides the low pay from what you’ve said, what do you think of them overall?

    • @RushinTruckin
      @RushinTruckin  3 роки тому +2

      They're a decent company. Other than low pay, the other 2 annoyances I had with them was the security code you have to enter every...single...time you start the truck and the no idling between 32-70 degrees. The truck will auto shut off if it's between those temps and with no apu or any other way of running the a/c, it can get quite uncomfortable (think of the greenhouse effect). In SOME of their trucks, that can be overridden by bumping up the idle but it's a luck of the draw if your truck will have that as well.
      Oh...the other annoyance I had was their slip seat policy. If you were off for 4 days or longer, they'll have you clean your truck completely out and issue it to someone else then give you another truck when you get back to work.
      Hope that helps.
