I was and am a huge Metallica fan. The 1st time I heard Stone Cold Crazy, it was the b-side of the single for Enter Sandman, so I didn't realize it was a cover. I was 16 when the black album self titled Metallica came out. I remember showing my friend the new Metallica song, and he's the one who told me it was a Queen cover. I had no idea. Like you said, no internet, so it was years later that I finally heard Queen's version, and I was blown away by how heavy / fast it was, especially for 1974. Blown away by the speed but then the more melodic vibe to it. Metallica just can't capture that but they made it their own. I love both versions. I go with Queen also because their the originator and especially it being 1974.
Clearly a Win for Queen on this one :-). Not because Metallica did a poor job covering -- it was very faithful and very rockin', and if you didn't know the original it would be considered a very strong cover! But for the reasons you cited, Nick, and also because NO ONE IN 1974 played any songs like this, it's an easy win. First Thrash Metal record ever recorded! At least, it seems so.
@@mitchand9 actually, there's nothing problematic with his statement and it is completely consistent with what is written in the Wikipedia entry on Thrash: "Among the earliest songs credited with influencing future thrash musicians was Queen's "Stone Cold Crazy", recorded and released in 1974. @@mitchand9 It is widely considered a precursor to thrash metal. But you are correct. Speed is not the defining characteristic of thrash metal. Another song by Queen called Dead on Time would be a fast song that would not be considered thrash. SCC is fairly credited as belonging to the root of the genre.
Its considered the first thrash metal song but it isn't Thrash Metal... this is the whole which came first the chicken or the egg... the answer is obviously the egg but it was layed by an animal that wasn't a chicken... there was no thrash metal when this came out but definitely layed the egg that became thrash metal...
The real winner is the song itself. Alvin and the Chipmucks could do a version of this masterpiece and I would love it!! THAT is the true testament to Queen.

That was great fun because I had not heard the Metallica version. I do prefer the Queen version, and in fact 'Sheer Heart Attack' is my favourite Queen album. There are so many hidden gems in there, and it flows brilliantly. Nick, you should take a listen to 'Brighton Rock', a track that showcases how original a guitarist Brian May was. A great reaction, thanks Nick.
This was fun because I didn't even know Metallica covered this song. They did a great job, some killer drums and pretty great guitar on their version too but I have to go with the original. Queen had some pretty heavy songs on their first few albums.
Great reaction and comparison, actually the live version from Queen is even better then the studio version. You should check out the live version. Stone Cold Crazy - Queen live at the Rainbow 1974. It is amazing when you think that Freddie Mercury started writing this song in 1969. Metallica did a great cover of the song, it is actually one of the better Queen covers you can find. I also like the fact that Metallica always pays homage to the bands that inspired them. There is actually a lot of Queen that you can find in Metallica. I give you a lot of credit! Because usually what ever you hear first you go with my hats off to you from a fellow band guy me it’s queen version , no disrespect to Metallica first time I heard their version
Gotta agree with you. It's so difficult to cover any Queen song & make it sound better, even by a band as good as Metallica. Great video as usual. Agree with Richard regarding Brighton Rock, a must listen!
You chose wisely my friend. The interesting thing about Queen is that while their early music was accused of being overly ornate, when they wanted to be simple and to the point, they were really masterful at that as well. We Will Rock You doesn't even have any instruments other than the guitar solo which comes in towards the end of the song
At the 1992 Freddie Mercury tribute concert James Hetfield joined Queen to perform this sing. Tony from Black Sabbath (Brian May's best friend) joined them too. That's also worth checking out.
I was pretty sure you'd go with the Metallica version and I like both but I agree Queens is better. I like Freddie's smooth, sort of jazzy playful delivery, the harmonies on the "chorus" and to me a better drum sound. I hope you'll do more original and cover comparisons.
Not even a contest...Queen! Metallica did an excellent job paying homage to the originators (as with most of the covers on Garage Inc. - in fact, I think their version of Astronomy beats out Blue Oyster Cult! Whiskey In The Jar is on par with Thin Lizzy's) One could argue that Queen's version was thrash metal before that term was ever coined! (Much like the song Sheer Heart Attack was punk...before punk) There's a reason why Brian May is held in such high regard as one of the greatest guitarists - the man can pretty much do whatever style he pleases. No comparison with Freddie - he will forever reign supreme. And that rhythm section: John Deacon > Jason Newsted (I think both are excellent bassists); Roger Taylor >> Lars Ulrich - honestly Lars is hardly fit to hold Roger's sticks. For me, Lars has always been a sloppy drummer - not horrible - keeps time well, but his technical skills aren't even close to Taylor's (AND Roger's singing a killer falsetto while playing...so significant bonus points!)
I'd say Lars "Technical Skills" were in "...and Justice for All", then Bob Rock ruined his progression as a drummer by asking the band to play simpler, which then made Lars Lazier in future albums (imo). That's why I left Metallica behind and went in search for Thrash and other Metal to satisfy my cravings that I got from Progressive Rock previously.

I heard the Metallica version first then found out it was a Queen cover...I thought the Queen version couldn't live up to the cover...DAMN...Brian May is no joke; I shoulda known
Great reaction. Yep, I give it up to Queen on this one. Their live version is even better. (weird, I JuST saw Brit Floyd last Thursday! They were amazing).
I know, I came late to this video, but ... check out "Queen - Stone Cold Crazy (Trent Reznor remix)", too! It's an official remix ... Trent added some extra layers (incl. original Queen demo sounds), which makes the original Queen track much more heavier than Metallica's version! ;-) *fun100% And I guess (I don't know), ... this version might have been the blue print of the Metallica version!
Never heard Metallica’s version, I’m not a Metallica freak. But Queen’s version I grew up with. I actually read Lord of the Ring trilogy (that is actually 6 books, 2 per book) listening entirely to Queen Queen II, and Sheer Heart Attack…
James Hetfield performed this song at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert in 1992. He did a pretty good rendition, I admit. As a Queen fan I of course prefer their version. You should take some time to hear some early Queen. Father to Son, Liar, Son and Daughter, Keep Yourself Alive.
Yep - Queen.. Roger Taylor drums.. Brian May's guitar.. and Freddie vocals.. c'mon - you are totally right... ! If you want some "holy speed Batman" check out Queen's "Dead on Time"... ua-cam.com/video/uKoivlPUg_Y/v-deo.html.. Brian May is killah!
Admire Metalilica's homage to Queen..but pretty sure you'd get a thrill from Queen's LIAR among others from their early days. On STONE COLD CRAZY, you just can't beat Freddie's vocals. Period.
I actually don’t think I’d ever heard the Metallica version before now. Not a huge fan of their covers if I’m honest, I almost always prefer the originals. This is no exception, one of my favourite Queen songs from maybe my favourite album of theirs.
Brave of Metallica to cover a Queen song, but it didn't beat the original. Suggestion, you should do the same thing with Am I evil - Metallica's version vs. the Diamond Head original
@@NicknLex I'm afraid I'd suggest soo many cover "interpretations" . . . the Rockers of my age or older would HATE me :P ("No no nooooo! Stop with tha' HIT-TING!!!").
Love Both Bands but the original is great and was fortunate enough to see Freddie Mercury perform this live twice with Queen in MSG. Seen Metallica twice as well and they tore it up. It is customary for a band to cover their favorite bands and Metallica did justice to Stone Cold Crazy….
No one is gonna deliver “I ran right outta juice” better than Freddie lol. You should check it out live…it’s even faster. Performance at the Rainbow is outstanding.
Wow… I didn’t know about the Metallica cover , but this is a real eye opener in terms of the enormous range that Queen had and some of the bands who were inspired by their genius. There’s no “ better” version , both have their things and let’s just enjoy both 👍🏴
hmmm... I have heard the Metallica version before... I think they (Metallica) are too drum forward. and the guitar on the Queen version has a richer overall sound to it... and it flows better. And of course, there is no comparison to Fred's voice. So for me Queen wins on Drums / Guitar and Lead vocals. But hey, you can't fault another band for trying.
Agree, for sure, but John Deacon's bass gives the Queen recording an incredible depth, without too much "punch". It's the reason I think the Queen version sounds fuller & warmer(? - stone cold? WTF). LOL
I like the Metallica version but that’s just because I’m a more metal guy, queens original song was incredible and really was one of the first thrashy songs out there.
Love both Queen and Metallica. Queen for being trailblazers of early metal riffs, Metallica for being fans of great music and exposing teens to Queen (unbeknownst to them) more than 10 years later.
Huge Metallica fan since 83 but I still give it to Queen . I keep hoping if we offer God a good enough trade we can get Freddie back. I am beginning to realize We have nothing to offer .😕🤘
Whew! The cover is just not my cup of tea. There's a difference between a little bit of a group's own spin and turning a song into something that they would have done. Best covers IMHO: Nirvana covering Bowie's The Man Who Sold the World and AFI's cover of the Cure's Just Like Heaven. And both Bowie and Robert Smith liked them.

Really like the Merciful Fate and Motörhead covers on their album. Awesome selection here from your listener. “Whiskey in a jar “ cover from Thin Lizzy would be a good comparison
Metallica's cover was on a compilation album done by Elektra records called Rubáiyát: Elektra's 40th Anniversary. @@mvunit3 According to dUg - this first track is the ONLY one without some signature harmonies. It also sounds to me like Ty's gone back to that early tone, at least partially. My wife commented that it reminded her of a combination of Pearl Jam and Jimmy Page - she had NO idea that Jeff Ament had basically credited grunge to King's X, or that all three members were thanked in the credits for "Ten."

It completely blew my young, under developed mind! I like Metallica’s cover, but Queen’s original will always be the only one for me.
And those two VERY DIFFERENT styles of songs only give a hint of what was to come! Your story reminds me of when I first heard Bo Rap when I was 13 or so and had to call the radio station just to ask WTF I was listening to!
I saw the perfect combination of this song live in 1992. Queen playing (sadly without Freddie) this song with James Hetfield on vocal & guitar. Also a bit of Tony Iommi thrown in for good measure.

Queen version better in every aspect - but no surprise there though. Whole Sheer Heart Attack album is class - Queen's best for me
Cool T shirt by the way 👍🏻
I heard the Metallica version first then found out it was a Queen cover...I thought the Queen version couldn't live up to the cover...DAMN...Brian May is no joke; I shoulda known
Queen, saw them once, seen Metallica 3 times.... still go for Queen on this one
Great reaction. Yep, I give it up to Queen on this one. Their live version is even better. (weird, I JuST saw Brit Floyd last Thursday! They were amazing).
Correct analysis
I know, I came late to this video, but ... check out "Queen - Stone Cold Crazy (Trent Reznor remix)", too!
It's an official remix ... Trent added some extra layers (incl. original Queen demo sounds), which makes the original Queen track much more heavier than Metallica's version! ;-) *fun100%
And I guess (I don't know), ... this version might have been the blue print of the Metallica version!
Queen ! Hands down. The growl in Brian’s guitar. The finesse in Rogers drumming. John’s Bass and Freddie’s vocals. The “sound effects !”❤
Never heard Metallica’s version, I’m not a Metallica freak. But Queen’s version I grew up with. I actually read Lord of the Ring trilogy (that is actually 6 books, 2 per book) listening entirely to Queen Queen II, and Sheer Heart Attack…
Guitar is heavier sounding on queen
James Hetfield performed this song at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert in 1992. He did a pretty good rendition, I admit. As a Queen fan I of course prefer their version. You should take some time to hear some early Queen. Father to Son, Liar, Son and Daughter, Keep Yourself Alive.
Check out to my knowledge is the first time James sang Stone Cold Crazy at The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert with the rest of Queen and Tony Iommie.
Period.
Truth !
That's an amazing idea!!!! Maybe do an entire series??
@@NicknLex I'm afraid I'd suggest soo many cover "interpretations" . . . the Rockers of my age or older would HATE me :P ("No no nooooo! Stop with tha' HIT-TING!!!").
The original has more going on and Freddie’s voice though I did like zMetallica’s version was good!
Queen are the greatest live band of all time
Queen.... 10000%
Anyone that can cover a queen song is a star to me
Brian's Dive bombing on the Red Special and his guitar inspired sirens are just the touch, I love Metallica and their version but Queen is it.
I personally love the queen version more:)
Love Both Bands but the original is great and was fortunate enough to see Freddie Mercury perform this live twice with Queen in MSG. Seen Metallica twice as well and they tore it up. It is customary for a band to cover their favorite bands and Metallica did justice to Stone Cold Crazy….
Gonna always say Queen did it best because they did it first and as far as I know nothing really sounded like it at the time.
WTF). LOL
How many groups covered "Tie Your Mother Down"! So many great versions of that too including W.A.S.P.
Great reaction, totally agree Queen smashed it.
Metallica made a great job.... But I still prefer the Queen version 😉
I like the Metallica version but that’s just because I’m a more metal guy, queens original song was incredible and really was one of the first thrashy songs out there.
As hard as it is to give Queen credit, they truly were, in a major way, the launchers of uptempo hard rock.
Queens harmony even in this song really show through.
Queen beats Metallica.
Absolutely. To quote a line from Liar on Queen's fantastic first eponymous album: "All day long, All day long, All day long!"
Love both Queen and Metallica. Queen for being trailblazers of early metal riffs, Metallica for being fans of great music and exposing teens to Queen (unbeknownst to them) more than 10 years later.
Ist time hearing Metallica doing this....all I can say is, if
Queen had Never done it.....
Okay!
Queen wins again. Undefeated 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Huge Metallica fan since 83 but I still give it to Queen . I keep hoping if we offer God a good enough trade we can get Freddie back. I am beginning to realize
We have nothing to offer .😕🤘
QUEEN can be compared , QUEEN is unique, Thank you for the good presentation.
Whew! The cover is just not my cup of tea. There's a difference between a little bit of a group's own spin and turning a song into something that they would have done. Best covers IMHO: Nirvana covering Bowie's The Man Who Sold the World and AFI's cover of the Cure's Just Like Heaven. And both Bowie and Robert Smith liked them.
ouuu thats a difficult question... Metallica blows my mind... Queen Too.. wow that rocks..
Metallica won a Grammy for this, Queen never won a competitive Grammy. But, Queen did it best!
Isn't that crazy tho??? That just goes to show ya how bias the US music industry was 'n still is 🙄😑.
@@Motown-1966 Maybe they got it, because they didn't get the one for Justice ... 😉
@@rudolfbecker4313 💁🏾♀️ I’m sorry…please enlighten me on what ya mean by 'justice.' Thx 🙏🏾 in advance ✌🏾.
@@Motown-1966 They didn't get the grammy for their album Justice for all in the metal category, some strange jury decided to give it to Jethro Tull. Tull - metal ? big laughter .... well, the bosses of the industry judge ... without any knowledge, as it seems ...
@@rudolfbecker4313 Ohhhhh...gotcha - thx for the clarification ✌🏾!
Its like asking, The real Taj Mahal Palace or the lego version? Queen all day long 😄
Singing is definitely better on Q version.
Never heard either.
Brian May sounded great.
Your in for a thrill if you check out the LIVE Queen version at the Rainbow (video). Time travel moment.
For a tie , watch the version from the Freddie Mercury tribute concert.
Grew up w/ the Queen version, so i knew it was a cover when Metallica did the song. Good cover, decent...but Queen is so much better here. I'm a drummer and Roger Taylor's drums sound much better...don't like the sound of Lars' drums here, especially the snare. Freddie...better vocals. Brian May's guitar tone....awesomeness and the underrated, much maligned Deacon on Bass. The original rules the day here.
K Mich I agree totally about the drums, no offence to Metallica
Wouldn't it be cool if Freddy were still around and they covered Metallica.
That would be AWESOME!
We can only dream. But it's GREAT dream!!!!!!! 🤣😍
Really like the Merciful Fate and Motörhead covers on their album. Awesome selection here from your listener.
“Whiskey in a jar “ cover from Thin Lizzy would be a good comparison
Queen flows and Metallica marches..so Queen for me
Is this a serious question?
👑
imho, the only real difference is that Metallica’s version was more cleanly produced and ever slightly heavier. both are great versions respectively.
Metallica's cover was on a compilation album done by Elektra records called Rubáiyát: Elektra's 40th Anniversary. It may have been on a later covers EP, but that's where it originally came from, as I recall. The Queen one is better, absolutely! By the way. when are you guys going to do more King's X? #nicknlexrequest
Yes! MORE Kings X :D
@@mvunit3 THEY JUST DROPPED A NEW TRACK THIS MORNING! NEW KING'S X!
@@MattKrogmeier JUST now checked it out. Man! I LOVE the "tone" of Ty's guitar! That _seemed_ to be VERY different for them, I loved it!
Supposedly they have gotten back to doing more "harmonies" like they used to. I HOPE that's true :).
I like them both but the queen version I have always liked more
Imagine being a 13 year old punk, and going out and buying Queen’s ‘Sheer Heart Attack’ album for the song ‘Killer Queen’, and then playing the album and hear ‘Stone Cold Crazy’ for the first time.
I first heard the Metallica version, and was surprised at how hard Queen's original went. Both versions are on my playlist!
I don't think Metallica would say there's was better.
Roger Taylor’s drumming is so much better and Freddie’s voice…the best. Queen all the way.
no competition whatsoever ... QUEEN RULE!
I saw the perfect combination of this song live in 1992. Queen playing (sadly without Freddie) this song with James Hetfield on vocal & guitar. Also a bit of Tony Iommi thrown in for good measure.
😄 your face said it all It may not be fair to some but Freddie Mercury / Queen in general can’t be topped (Live is even better ! )
And Liar Live at the Rainbow ‘74 will kill you . Like your channel TY subscribed
Metallica was'nt even close to Queen.
Queen hit it out of the park... homerun !!
Queen version is the best. They're both great efforts ...but Queen's is much more polished.
The cover is the one I grew up with so I'm partial to it.
Listen to " Modern Times Rock and Roll " it preceded " Stone Cold Crazy " !
Queen the better 😊
What plays at first seconds? Please
I like how pronounces Tommy gun lol
Queen is unbeatable on this song. Brian May is is versatile - he can play any style and it always sound like him. Try Ogre Battle/Ferry Feller's Master Stroke/Nevermore - an absolute journey.
Hope you've seen hetfield perform this with queen for the freddy mercury tribute gig.
I like the 70s Queen and the 80s Metallica .... it's 50:50 for me, when I want to hear Queen, I listen to Queen, when I want to hear Metallica, I listen to Metallica. But be sure, there are lots of covers, which don't get a diplomatic jugdement !
