I'm watching this in January 2025, I just read Diane Francis's book. It's a spectacular idea, necessary nonetheless for Canada in these geopolitical conditions. Every Canadian should read her book, I learned more about the history of modern Canada than from any other source. Canada has been in steep decline for the last 12 years, Diane's book somehow foresaw what would be - and still is - Canada today

I hope this will happen the sooner the better. Besides french Quebec, I don't see any difference between Canada and USA. Same language, same values, same culture, same melting pot societies. I am Canadian and have lived many years professionally in the US and feel quite at home in both countries. Like in a marriage, we complete each other and become a power couple. I believe it is already happening.

    • @georgebrocklehurst8653

***** I completely agree with your analysis of Canada's "melting pot" versus the U.S.'s. Canada does not expect assimilation of its newcomers, and its cultural pluralism works quite well. Of course I'm referring only to English Canada. I also agree that the U.S. wouldn't tolerate the decentralized government of the province of Quebec nor Quebec's linguistic policies... Quebec would pretty much have to say au revoir to itself. On the other hand all would not be lost for the Quebecois. To attract big tourist bucks, Americans would know what to do to actually make Quebec look the "distinct society" it always believed it was :-)

I think all these issues should be left to the state and province level. As diversified as Europe can be, they can still create a Eurozone by eliminating all borders. Canada and the USA are similar in standards of living and Canada is depending up to 90% on trade with USA. Canada has a population similar to California but with a real estate larger than the US including the North pole. Would it be an awesome country.

Its kind of Canada's only hope. We are so screwed. Dollar is -40%... and average canadian wages are far less than the poorest us state comparitively. Theres no digging out of this massive hole they've dug, aside from fully harnessing the economic power of its natural resources, and that will take at least 10 years.
Worst economic outlook for the next 10 years of any developed country, its no wonder people are leaving.

In a dangerous world with growing power in Russia and China, the unity of the North Americans will become an existential necessity. It is perfectly possible that Canada and the USA can have a "marriage" in which their identities would be maintained, but the economies and defense concerns will be merged. I also have a dream that the people of Anglo-America can have free access to both territories, and that people can live anywhere in our continental territory having, as it were, a form of dual citizenship with specific north-American rights, the rights that come from the intersection of our governments in a federation constitution. North America is the richest, most powerful unit on the planet. It would become the largest political amalgam on the planet, and that will insure our safety and happiness. Good work Diane! Your efforts will not be in vain.

Then russia and north korea and india and possibly serbia will merge china wants to be its own country but will still be their allies. Then america and canada would merge and the uk since its arguably canadas and americas best friend and uk wants to leave Europe. So then canada and america and uk will merge then denmark wants to merge with america. And it said it will give america a better system and goverment and college system, healthcare. Then america wants to buy iceland. So if russia went against america it would be

Canada is doing Great, we've moved from 23rdGDP to current 10th GDP and will take 8th by 2017. Canada is about to build the GREAT NORTH PASSAGE, a 1.1 Billion, 7,000Kilometer Hiway in the High North that will go coast to coast. This one project will increase Exports by 50% to both Oceans, and Canada will challenge France and the UK for 6th and 5th Largest GDP. Canada's economy is built on tangible resources when America's money is all imaginary on Wall St. If the Dollar Crashes what would America have to fall back on, RIGHT!! This is a fall back position in a worse case Scenario that the dollar crashes. Except we aren't interested in your Death Penalty or 3strikes everyone goes to jail forever Bullshit, or all your Guns, I could spend an Hour writing the Differences that make our Countries Unique and they are Difference's so big we share the Worlds Largest Boarder for a reason. Lastly there's no Fucking way we are going to take on your 17Trillion dollar debt, this is just a plan to steal what you can't have; many an American I've heard jokingly over the years about invading Canada. I too laugh, because you tried that once and today Canada has many friends and the UK allegiance is to it's Commonwealth states.Yes, it was Hundreds of Years ago, and we've put things in the past and forged a friendship that trade's together and wars together, but most importantly we share a boarder together.People think Canadians and America's are the same or similar. Apple's and Oranges are both round, but they have little in Common. Same can be said about our relationship, Canadian and American have very different views. I wouldn't approve this merger, and neither would anyone I know. We like to Vote on everything up here, we even have the power to kick the Prime Minister out of Office and we don't have to wait 4years to do it. Nothing against our leader Justin Trudeau, he's doing great. Yet, I'm sure if one whiff of this trash comes out of his mouth he'll be looking for another job. Seriously!!The real kicker here is should BriExit leave the EU, they're going to be looking for some new sources of revenue. I like money with the Queens face on it, so should come the day that you don't want our resources; because your acting like a jilter lover.[Explain the Keystone,Bitch] I'm sure the GREAT NORTH PASSAGE will make Exporting with UK a very lucrative venture. Why don't you ask Mexico to join, you could put all the farm land to good use, seeing how you dominated and conquered the economy of selling corn and other grains in Mexico. And put all the poor farmer's out of work. No your looking for Billions of dollars in Oil, and Diamonds,Lumber, grains,Gold,Uranium,Nickel the list is actually very long. Short of a repeat of 1812, I don't see it happening. OR you could ask American's if they'd all like Tax funded Healthcare, and if they'd like to become part of Canada. If Americans voted to become Canada, So Canada would go from 10 Provinces to 60, Well Texas wants to go it alone and California might too, so let them. Everywhere else falls under Canadian law and regulation. So first off, all the people in Death Row go to a Max Prison for the rest of there life. Next all Handguns are prohibited, also all assault weapons are prohibited. Only legal guns are Rifles and Shotguns. A sale taxes of 15% total will be introduced,[this is a huge part of the Tax funded Healthcare revenue. I'm sure most Americans are in horror at such a proposal, well we Canadians fell the same way about joining America. So dream on Lady!! It's NEVER going to happen.!!!

    • @Torontogal1973
      @Torontogal1973 8 років тому

Hunter Williams Canada fought for a Hundred years to get out from under the British thumb, why would we want to join the UK. The UK just learned a 40+year lesson about merging countries you think they want to jump back into another Union. 52% of the British say "NO" Also Canada is a Resource Power house on it's own. We just discovered 12Billion barrels of Crude Oil in the Tundra and have plans to build a coast to coast hiway to move the Energy[Oil] People and resources. []other countries will be able to ship by rail good coast to coast,[] also Seeing how Obama fucked us on the Keystone pipeline and we lost 10's of Billions because of it. Canada gains nothing but Trillions of Dollars in debt, merging with the USA. Then all the differences in Healthcare, Penal code[]We don't execute people and we don't lock people up for natural life. Plus we don't allow handgun ownership to Private citizens. You dump the Death penalty, dump the 3strikes Bullshit, dump the Handguns.. Maybe we as Canadians Would consider it. Except you don't have to do all those things to join Canada, just head to the Canada immigration office and apply for Citizenship.. Because if you dumped all the things Canada doesn't want and Americans do. Your no longer an American, your a Canadian. We in Canada vote on everything, and people still have the power to move the government. You think Canadians want to join with any country, No thanks. Yet we will accept petition to become Provinces of Canada. Granada has tried 3 times, but the East coast province keep blocking the move.. I told you people in Canada have voting power that matters. Hey you never know, we accepted Newfoundland in 1945. I have to say, Michigan and Maine would make nice 11th and 12th Provinces. Alaska would be truly a Great Province as we could extend the British Columbia Coastline further North. And Alaska name would become the New Western Territory. I think as a tribute to the old city of York [now Toronto] We could rename Detroit. [] New Toronto [] Doesn't feel so good when someone else tries to take over your Country, does it.

    • @Torontogal1973
      @Torontogal1973 8 років тому

spencer pease ?!?European colonial empires?!? Are you referring to the now Commonwealth countries, because they are 1st World Nations_ Canada and Australia. What fall? We gained independence. []So America gains independence it's a great thing.[] When Commonwealth countries gain there independence from Britain its a fall.[] If your plainly stating Britain's end as the Elite Country of the World. Enjoy yours, because no country has ever remained the top Economy and Military force for more than a couple hundred years. The King must always die, and another will take his place. Long live the King. You say by the end of the Century, []LOL[] you mean the year 2100. Well, good luck. Anyone born today will be in there early 80's by the 2100. Who knows in 80 years, Canada could be the #1 Economy in the World. Canada has everything to become a super power, we just need population. 80years of Baby making who knows. Also Britain is no longer tied down by the EU and having to support failed economies like Greece and Spain. They just might pass you in the next decade or two, becoming the Elite nation they once were, both Economically and Militarily. Canada doesn't want to join the UK, but we have lots of Oil to sell them if they want it. =) Canada will be 7th largest economy by 2018, and by 2020. We could easily take 6th from France. Let see how the next few years play out, but Canada isn't joining anyone.

If Canada becomes dissolved (as an independent country) and merged with the United States of (North) America, the new supernation will increase its states from 50 to 63, as Canada has 10 provinces and 3 territories. Besides that, Canada and the U.S. together is larger than Russia, by area.
I think Canada should have entered the United States of (North) America in 1867 when being independent from Britain, rather than become an own country.

I live in the Northeastern part of the United States. Roughly three and a half hours away from Ontario- Thousand Islands Bridge. I grew up always loving Canada. Fishing there with my father. My honeymoon was Niagara Falls as well as my most favorite City, Toronto. I don't know how many people are aware of this but the longest undefended border in the world runs between the United States and Canada. This should say something. I have no idea and never understood why the Canadiens look at the Americans in the way that they do. It is well known that the United States is the the most powerful country in the world. It can completely wipe out or force its will on Canada. Yet the United States goes out of its way to keep Canada as its friendly neighbor. Who do you think will come to the Canadiens defense militarily in the wink of an eye as well as being the most effective? The author here describes that the typical American knows roughly 1% of the goings on in Canada. How much do Canadians truly understand the United States? I think it sets a very poor representation and it saddens me.

The Beyond the Border Initiative is exactly what it is titled. "Beyond the Border".
It's about protecting the North America "Perimeter". Protecting it from Russia, and Chinese Invasion.
Canada does not have near enough the population to protect its massive land mass. Canada is, by mass, the second largest country in the world next to Russia.
Russia is already trying to claim Canadian land in the high north to extract Oil, Gas and other Natural Resources.
The United States of America's energy future is completely relied on access to Canadian Natural Resources, including Oil, Gas, Water, Minerals, and Gold. Without Canada on the side of the U.S., the U.S. is at the mercy of the world for everything from energy, to water, to minerals.
It is in the U.S.A.'s best interest to protect the perimeter around Canada, and maintain a healthy relationship with Canada to maintain its own security in the future.
Canada has already sold land, and a mine to China, much to the shegrin of the U.S. government.
The Beyond the Border initiative emphasizing that its all about trade, and free unrestricted flow of its citizens is just a carrot to gain acceptance of the citizens of Canada, allowing them to maintain access to their winter abodes in Florida and Arizona, and access to sporting events in border cities like Detroit and Buffalo.
The Perimeter Security Agreement is all about the future of both countries. For Canada, there is no way we can possibly protect our huge border from invasion from China or Russia, and for the U.S. its all about protecting energy resources, minerals and water from Canada to maintain its needs for the next hundred years or so.
The internal border should be removed completely allowing 'free-flow' between Canadian and U.S. citizens, doing this would allow the development of more Canadian lands for U.S. citizens to reside in, and build up the population of the territories, thus helping to protect from outside invasion, at the same time boosting the economy of the two countries together, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security however is so paranoid about the possibility of enemies already in Canada that this will never happen. However, now that immigrants to either country must adhere to the immigration policies of both countries, this may actually happen in one hundred years time once the DHS is feeling more secure of who is lurking in the population of either territory.
While the borders of the world are almost disappearing, the border around the U.S.A. is becoming more and more deadlocked from immigrants, tourists, even trade, under the policies of the DHS.
As an economic, natural resources and land source, the North America of the future could resemble a world superpower again, (if another Obama isn't elected into office) - without a merger, both countries are too weak to protect themselves from invasion, Canada being too weak from human resources to fight off invasion, and the U.S. too weak from energy resources to fight off invasion, and at the mercy of foreign nations to supply it energy in order to stave off invaders. Canada and the U.S. could successfully merge like the E.U. and maintain an existence like Quebec, and the rest of Canada being recognized as a somewhat 'independent, and specialized state, with its own internal rules and regulations while maintaining a membership in the country as a whole".

If the US and Canada do not merge, they should at least have a customs union. There are literally towns where you cannot cross the street because the streets are on the border, and that is just utterly insane. There is no reason Canada should not dissolve its already splintered Parliament, and allow the individual provinces to join the Union as States. Existing Premiers will be governors, and Justin Trudeau will have no trouble getting a job at Tim Horton's.
It's getting to the point where our own concern for the renewed aggressive nature of Russia is driving our own necessity to get better control of the northern territories in the arctic. The aggressive economic nature of China is also becoming a major factor in the economic sovereignty of Canada.
If Canada does not come to its senses and join the United States, the eventual annexation of Canada into the USA will happen by our initiation in an effort to establish our own security against future threats. This may happen, whether Canada likes it or not. We would prefer Canadians come to their senses and start the process now, before it becomes an emergency.

You can see this as well in her interview with Steve Paikin on the subject, but whenever someone presses Francis on this topic and points out that it will not happen because Canadians will oppose it, she usually falls back on the view that she's just trying to start a discussion, which implies that we shouldn't take her too seriously. But she also insists that we take her seriously and, like at 23:31, says "a merger of some kind is inevitable."
American annexation of Canada has been "inevitable" since the War of 1812. And it hasn't happened yet. Left-wing critics of free trade in Canada in the late 1980s and early 1990s said that it would erase the border and lead to our absorption into the US. But as Francis points out, we've actually seen border-thickening, if anything. None of her ideas is "inevitable" in the slightest. This Appeal to Teleology provides refuge for scoundrels who can't make a proper argument.

This continent never was and never will be united as one nation. For any Canadian with any connection to the US through citizenship or employment/business, or if you have family who do, I can say unequivocally that the status quo is a massive pain in the ass. And there are probably 5 million Canadians who are in that situation when you count spouses and kids of the 1M+ US citizens up here. Where do I start? The currency shenanigans. The RRSP/TFSA crap. The double declaration and costs of taxes (US considers you globally regardless of residency so you have to file) the lineups to go across on bridges and airports...even with NEXUS, which tells DHS everything about you and you go for a live interview at USCIS...you still have to wait on entry. It's patently stupid. It all needs to change. Whether its in the ways Francis lays out in her book or some other way I don't know. But right now we've got a farcical circus going on.

Honestly, as an American. While there would be pluses to both sides. Canada would ultimately be stuck with the short end of the stick.
Economically speaking, both sides would benefit greatly from a unified economy, However the positives really end there.
The biggest thing to consider is that if the USA, and Canada did merger into one nation. It's no doubt at all that the American culture, and society would completely dominate the Canadian side. I mean, the USA has over 300,000,000 people compared to Canada's 35,000,000. As a result, Canadians would probably feel like they're being stripped of their identity and their sovereignty, and that's because they would be.
On the flip side however, that's not to say that Canada wouldn't have it's influence on the American side of things as well. For instance, American conservatives would deplore the idea of having Canada join the US, as there's just no way in hell Canadians would support the Republican party. A unified Canada, and USA would spell the end of the Republican party. (Which is not a bad thing.)
Also, I see a lot of Canadians bringing up healthcare as a concern, but honestly these days most Americans are in favor of universal healthcare, especially since Bernie Sanders has been campaigning about it. Were a unification to happen, we would probably just adopt Canada's healthcare policy.
All in all, it's a cute idea to ponder for 5 minutes, but in reality it wouldn't really be practical. Let the Canadians have their sovereignty, and let us have ours.

+Jessie Edsell Aside from Quebec, Canada doesn't have a culture, it relies on the US for it, but now we're seeing cultures from all over the world invade us because we are so weak and fragile as a nation. To be honest Canadians don't really have a choice of sovereignty, our government is already decaying, demographics changing, i can see that within 50 years Canada would be balkanized if it doesn't choose to join the states.

Canadians will keep their free healthcare. We'd get it as well. At this point, there's even people in the Republican Party wanting free healthcare. Even conservatives want free healthcare. We just don't want our taxes raised, or military spending cut. Instead, cut other bullshit programs that are nearly pointless. I want free healthcare. I wouldn't mind having it, but I *DO NOT* want to fucking pay for other people to get free healthcare, because that makes me pay more in taxes, and makes me poorer. It wouldn't be an end to the Republican Party, if USA and Canada merged because I have an idea to just make some red states, and swing states worth more delegates. For example, the conservative western states are not worth as much as the conservative southern states. Texas, Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas have more delegates. Florida is technically a swing state, but whatever. So just give more delegates to Utah, Montana, Colorado, Wyoming, Arizona, and other red conservative states. Canada has a smaller population. Their entire population is roughly the same as California's. I don't think they would fuck the elections up too much because their provinces wouldn't be worth a lot of delegates. Quebec, and Ontario being exceptions. Like I said, just make red states worth more delegates, and decrease the amount of delegates blue states have to make it perfectly even. We have to be fair to all parties. I am not calling for an end to the Democratic Party even though I am a Republican, so we have to be fair to all parties. Even third parties like the Green Party, and Libertarian Party.
We'd keep our gun laws the same, and almost all our laws except healthcare would be the same. Canada would suffer from that, so that is one bad thing for Canadians. Their whole government system would be changed.

      1. If we scrapped our monarchist system (she’s dead, let’s do it already) and reconstituted as separate from the British, we’d need a head of state/king to remain a parliamentary system - or we form a republic (like that wacky mayor of Toronto William Lyon Mackenzie wanted to do).
Instead of forming our own republic, which’ll let’s face it would pretty much be a carbon copy of the US, we could join theirs and divided our nation up into 5-13 states (with options for parts to merge with existing states and vice versa). If we did, we’d still be able to administer universal health care programs on the state level. Our health care is administered provincially as is, and this can easily be a conditional upon entrant to the union.
      2. It’s pretty easy to get a weapon in Canada, don’t you kid yourself. As the right to bear arms would be applied to all the newly joined states; as it should be in Canada today anyway.

The GDP of Canada and the State of California as well as the population are in fact the same... a little less than $2T USD per year or a little more than twice what Apple Inc. is worth... think a single company is worth about half of the Canadian whole GDP...Now compare that to the US ~$16.7T USD and I'm not seeing a big impact. Canadian Oil? The US is now the largest producer in the world and now can export it...
That said, I do not think the Canadians will ever vote to merge with the United States however, little by little the Canadian economy will more dependent. The new security measures of the US-Canadian board has not helped either and surely has hurt Canada more...

I do not think Canadians like Americans well enough to begin with. They call themselves peacemakers but go to war alongside us-a bit dissonant. Canadians and Americans have a different concept over individual rights over access to firearms. Quebec wants to be a part of America but the US is monocultural. Which is to say Americans speak English first and possibly French second. I am not so certain that people from Quebec would actually be comfortable with that. The Anglo-Saxon divide she enumerated upon is not a big deal but paradoxically Quebec which is receptive to the idea is the problem frankly. They are a constitutional monarchy but their provinces are autonomous not unlike the American Articles of Confederation but better run. The problem with that is that there are interprovincial economic squabbles in contemporary times not unlike the trade wars between New York and Pennsylvania. This does not occur in America anymore in fact states aren't sovereign over interstate matters because we have a federal government which took complete control after overcoming the Confederacy. I think it would be for the best but America might not be ready for it. For instance, there currently is a political balance between our two major political parties and if we were to merge we'll get the Trudeau voters and our Democrats subsuming the financially focused Republicans. There is no way that Canada could defend its arctic claims in any way appreciable to Russia. As it will turn out America would have to defend Canadian Arctic interests whether or not they are a part of us. Why though? I live in Michigan and you dump your nuclear waste into our shared great lakes, so please stop that. Who cares if they can't defend their extensive claims that's their problem. If we have to defend it informally we might as well merge. We consume each others products at such a high level that a merger would be negligible economically on a personal level. Although, as an international economic force the merger of these two nations would be peerless with all the diplomatic sway that would generate. The United States already has that...what do we gain besides arctic oil as great as that may be? Canadians dislike America anyways and we're already informally tied in with each other without a messy process that destabilizes what makes either country great. Not a good risk and if you think for a minute that Americans would so much as twitch a knee in regards to an EU format you don't know America.
