When done right, pixel art is my favourite style a game can take. This was my personal game of the year last year, I had such a fantastic time with it. The concept artbook they released finally arrived a couple of weeks ago for me, and the insight they provide into the design process for the characters, environments etc. was truly wonderful. I’m jealous of that limited edition box!!!
I've seen a lot of passing mentions to Sea of Stars, so this is the first real look I've come across. It looks very fun, and it looks like the collector box was well thought out.

The pixel art and characters are stunning! And I love the puzzles which are not on the too hard side. Sometimes I feel like a fool having to google the answer 😅
It's not chrono trigger, but something quite special in itself! Sea of Stars is definitely a game I'll look back fondly on. I do regret a bit buying it on steam because I couldn't wait for the physical release.. maybe I'll grab a copy for the shelf one day.
I enjoyed it a lot. It felt like the composer was either getting more experienced in production or confidence in what was being written. Music got better the further you progress

There are so many problems with this company ... but, I think there may be a ray of light. I really hope it does come to fruition and you receive yours.
Love this game I got it for ps5 have a few achievements on UA-cam since Sony severed the agreement with Elon musk x platform. I've not finished it yet.
I've played a bit of the game, it looked nice but lots of story and took awhile to get to the actual gameplay. I needed a clip for a video but maybe will go back to it in the future.
Funny 🤔 I thought it got into the gameplay very quickly. That opening scene with the archivist may put some people off, I guess .. personally I love that kind of narrative framework; but it's not everybody's cuppa.
That's very kind - but please always remember that there are good games out there that one person may like and another not - all for their own individual reasons.
It really is a cute little game and Garl is the bestest boy ever. I am still watching my friends lets play, because I don't like the gameplay. Exploration would be perfectly doable for me, but the locks and the timing based stuff is just really not for me. But I still think it is a really great game and I love what i have seen of the story so far. I maybe should get back to watching but I still have my own games to play. Too many games are coming and it is really bad for my wallet. I need to make sure I eat enough too. I just got home form my surgery. Now I just have to wait until it heals. I personally didn't like how chained echoes looks, but Kommi is playing it and the story is fairly interesting now that it has gotten somewhere. I am just again not a fan of the gameplay. But I also never got into final fantasy. I also can not wait to play Daybreak and Daybreak 2 one day. And some other games like Pokemon Zeta. I hope you're doing good. Greetings, great video. I also just watched your how you got into gaming video. Jrpgs are also my favorite. I just thought I would ask, have you ever played Chrono Trigger? For me it was the early 90's and the SNES is where I fell in love with jrpgs. If you have the time to try Chrono Trigger, I think you would enjoy it very much.
I found SoS to be flawed in a number of ways when it comes to its story. People say the issue is the gameplay, but the mode that increases enemy defense and turns off items balances it perfect imo. Despite that, I can't help but find it extremely charming.
The story criticism is something I've heard from a fair number of people. I guess it'll be one of those games where opinions are evenly divided on that - and that's really only natural. Glad to hear you enjoy it despite that drawback. And yes, the fine-grained adjustments for gameplay are a great enhancement imo. 👍

I just discovered your channel on my timeline this morning. I love the cozy vibes of your style of reviews which I love Britta. I discovered this beautiful game thanks to a online friend of mine told me I should check it out last year. So i grabbed it on sale during the steam Christmas sale, then once in my life I timed it perfectly to actually complete it right at the strike at midnight on my 34th birthday this year. Whih I call perfect timing. I loved my time with this adventure and wished I would've known about the Kickstarter cuz i would've loved to have backed this game up big time. Jrpgs is one difficult genre for me to get hooked on. But I just loved everything about this game. The great character growth pace, good story that plucked every heartstring, fun mini-games. I especially mid-way through discovered the mini-games of wheels. I got instantly hooked and did not want my journey to end. so I payed 2 months of nonstop wheels. lol I'll definitely watch more videos. :)

Channels like this serve to counter the popular narrative that video-games are the exclusive purview of teenagers and 20-somethings playing Fortnite. Gamers are no more homogenous than movie goers, there’s a wide variety of genres, tastes, skill levels and ages. Incidentally, this game is at the top of my Steam wishlist, but waiting for a decent discount as my backlog of games is already huge.
I absolutely love this game! I’ve been collecting the different physical editions for Sea of Stars. The art book is such a good read filled with beautiful pages of covers and concept art. Thank you for making this video!
I loved this game. I thought the visual presentation was top notch. Did you give CrossCode a go? For me these are the two games that really nailed the aesthetic without feeling like they were trying too much to appeal to nostalgia.
I haven't played CrossCode through completely. I did play a bit when I got it - and ofc the reason I got it was the aesthetic! 😄 It's still patiently sitting in the backlog.
So much passion coming from her, it fuels my own passion for video games. A while ago I tried to apply the advice you gave: "laughing at myself." for jumping from one game to another, wanting to do things absolutely perfectly. UPDATE! 😁 Eventhough I am nowhere near an expert, I think I have calmed down a little bit with having to do everything "perfect." I still 'have to do' things a certain way, but that is also autism. 😅 My biggest struggle was just that I think: accepting I have autism, and it's fine wanting to do things a specific way because that's the "only" way that makes sense for me.. (if that makes sense..😅) So again thanks for the advice!☺

Great game, i had a couple issues with it, but overall it was nice experience. Beautiful sprites and graphics, fun gameplay, pretty standard rpg story (this is not a bad thing though), and lovely music. On the topic of lovely music, may i make a suggestion to anyone who is interested? Try unicorn overlord too. It’s more of a strategy game than an rpg, but it has some of the best music ive heard in a game. It’s made by vanillaware (dragons crown, 13 sentinels, Odin sphere). I’ve been blown away by this game recently and been having a blast. I’m not sure if it’s up your alley Britta, but if you ever get a chance to look into it, I think you might pique your interest! Same for all you commenters, give it a shot! Love your videos as always.

I just started it up (finally) last night. 🙂 I bought the collector's edition when it released (I think in March?) and posted about it on Twitter. Well, that photo went "viral" - it was astonishing, so much interest in the game, I'll never forget it! I'm a complete nut about Vanillaware games and get everything by them. You're right, it's more strategy-type than I usually play; but I'm definitely giving it a go. I saw the intro tutorial is really good, so hopefully I'll grasp the essentials! I played this when it came out on Xbox Gamepass. Over the course of completing it it became one of my favorite games to date. And I strongly agree: every group of friends needs a Garl. And then protect him at all cost.
It was a fun game, beautiful soundtrack, enjoy yourself. One thing I did was turn the text box sounds down, I found it breally grated on me. I understand most people probably didn't have a issue but I swear it gave me a headache.
Ah, I think you mean the "typewriter clatter" during text/dialogue? That's something I also find unnerving (I turned that sound down in my video capture!) - but it is ofc how all the classic RPGs were made. So I reckon they did it for retro authenticity.

I just love to watch your unboxing videos, so graceful, in good pacing and hearty. I finally collected my Sea of Star art book a week ago, the art style is superb and same as you not many pixel art games have caught my eyes besides Sea of Stars. The game is in my back log and I plan to play it this summer. A treat playing it under the sun-lit room with air-con on.
I really loved the main story of the game, and Sea of Stars is one of my favorite projects I've ever backed on kickstarter although I just opted for digital rewards. I have some personal nitpicks about the end game and puzzles but it really is a game where all the artistic aspects of music and visual design help elevate a great game into an amazing one! Your enthusiasm for the game makes it want to replay it from the start :) I could listen to you talk about games you enjoyed forever.

I had such a great time with this one. Even just traversal was fun, which as much as I adore rpgs, isn't something I typically say or even think about for them. Garl 💖💖💖 I got it on Steam first but I ordered the iam8bit exclusive edition as well for Switch which had a two sided poster, the manual, slipcase, stickers and the digital soundtrack.
Hi Cherie, thanks and welcome! Yes, that is a particularly difficult question. You've probably noticed that I have never done a "My Favourite Games of All Time" type video. 😄 I would say my favourites (and remember: favourites change! When you're young, you think you know the answer ... but as you get older you realise that your favourites change many times over the years) would obviously be firmly in the RPG genre, esp. JRPG. But there are probably dozens of games within that genre that I would call "favourites". I'm particularly fond of the sub-genres dungeon crawler and tactics RPG. The games particularly close to my heart are from the Shin Megami Tensei universe: both SMT and Persona games. But that's pretty obvious if you look around my channel! 😀 You will also notice my fondness for anything Xenoblade. I would also add Atelier games and pretty much any RPG by Falcom.
I wasn't personally a huge fan of this game (one of the few anti- Garl folks out there 😓) but I will always appreciate the thought the devs put towards design. Clearly, a similar level of thought went into these limited edition goodies. Nothing stunning but something worthwhile. Love the artwork in that manual!

Sea of Stars does have awesome pixel art. That game called Souldiers has the same pixel art. Both are really good with really good story lines.

I especially mid-way through discovered the mini-games of wheels. I got instantly hooked and did not want my journey to end. so I payed 2 months of nonstop wheels. lol I'll definitely watch more videos. :)

I just had another viewer/commenter ask me about physical editions of the game, so I'll just mention that the company iam8bit has a special edition available (a bit similar to the Kickstarter one) if you wanted a console copy (Switch or Playstation).

Channels like this serve to counter the popular narrative that video-games are the exclusive purview of teenagers and 20-somethings playing Fortnite. Gamers are no more homogenous than movie goers, there’s a wide variety of genres, tastes, skill levels and ages. Incidentally, this game is at the top of my Steam wishlist, but waiting for a decent discount as my backlog of games is already huge.
This game is an absolute gem. I feel we're really lucky to have gotten it in this state of video games.

We have been spoilt with great JRPGs and indie RPGs over the last couple of years!
I loved this game. I thought the visual presentation was top notch. Did you give CrossCode a go? For me these are the two games that really nailed the aesthetic without feeling like they were trying too much to appeal to nostalgia.
I haven't played CrossCode through completely.
I did play a bit when I got it - and ofc the reason I got it was the aesthetic! 😄
It's still patiently sitting in the backlog.

So much passion coming from her, it fuels my own passion for video games. A while ago I tried to apply the advice you gave: "laughing at myself." for jumping from one game to another, wanting to do things absolutely perfectly. UPDATE! 😁
Eventhough I am nowhere near an expert, I think I have calmed down a little bit with having to do everything "perfect." I still 'have to do' things a certain way, but that is also autism. 😅
My biggest struggle was just that I think: accepting I have autism, and it's fine wanting to do things a specific way because that's the "only" way that makes sense for me.. (if that makes sense..😅)

Great game, i had a couple issues with it, but overall it was nice experience. Beautiful sprites and graphics, fun gameplay, pretty standard rpg story (this is not a bad thing though), and lovely music.
On the topic of lovely music, may i make a suggestion to anyone who is interested? Try unicorn overlord too. It’s more of a strategy game than an rpg, but it has some of the best music ive heard in a game. It’s made by vanillaware (dragons crown, 13 sentinels, Odin sphere). I’ve been blown away by this game recently and been having a blast. I’m not sure if it’s up your alley Britta, but if you ever get a chance to look into it, I think you might pique your interest! Same for all you commenters, give it a shot! Love your videos as always.

I bought the collector's edition when it released (I think in March?) and posted about it on Twitter. Well, that photo went "viral" - it was astonishing, so much interest in the game, I'll never forget it!
I'm a complete nut about Vanillaware games and get everything by them. You're right, it's more strategy-type than I usually play; but I'm definitely giving it a go. I saw the intro tutorial is really good, so hopefully I'll grasp the essentials! And it's got that type of old-fashioned story I just love. And the music, as you say.
I have the soundtrack, so no doubt that will feature in the future in some video. 😀

I played this when it came out on Xbox Gamepass. Over the course of completing it it became one of my favorite games to date. And I strongly agree: every group of friends needs a Garl. And then protect him at all cost.
It was a fun game, beautiful soundtrack, enjoy yourself.
One thing I did was turn the text box sounds down, I found it breally grated on me. I understand most people probably didn't have a issue but I swear it gave me a headache.
Ah, I think you mean the "typewriter clatter" during text/dialogue?
That's something I also find unnerving (I turned that sound down in my video capture!) - but it is ofc how all the classic RPGs were made. So I reckon they did it for retro authenticity.
@@Food4Dogs Oh definitely, it reminds me of the Golden Sun on the gameboy colour. The game does such a great job at keeping the retro charm which I love.
But yeah like both of us, I could imagine some people disliking the typewriter clatter.
I've just platinumed the game and now I'm trying chained echos which is also a retro inspired game.
Chained Echoes is also awesome. I like the combat in it even more than SoS.

I just love to watch your unboxing videos, so graceful, in good pacing and hearty.
I finally collected my Sea of Star art book a week ago, the art style is superb and same as you not many pixel art games have caught my eyes besides Sea of Stars.
The game is in my back log and I plan to play it this summer. A treat playing it under the sun-lit room with air-con on.
I really loved the main story of the game, and Sea of Stars is one of my favorite projects I've ever backed on kickstarter although I just opted for digital rewards. I have some personal nitpicks about the end game and puzzles but it really is a game where all the artistic aspects of music and visual design help elevate a great game into an amazing one!
Your enthusiasm for the game makes it want to replay it from the start :) I could listen to you talk about games you enjoyed forever.
Crazy nostalgia vibes watching your unboxing and i only played it last year 😂 Also played The Messenger last year which is also a game from Sabotage Studios, Sea of Stars impressed me that much that I just had to see their other work.

I got it on Steam first but I ordered the iam8bit exclusive edition as well for Switch which had a two sided poster, the manual, slipcase, stickers and the digital soundtrack.

Yes, that is a particularly difficult question. You've probably noticed that I have never done a "My Favourite Games of All Time" type video. 😄
I would say my favourites (and remember: favourites change! When you're young, you think you know the answer ... but as you get older you realise that your favourites change many times over the years) would obviously be firmly in the RPG genre, esp. JRPG.
But there are probably dozens of games within that genre that I would call "favourites". I'm particularly fond of the sub-genres dungeon crawler and tactics RPG.
The games particularly close to my heart are from the Shin Megami Tensei universe: both SMT and Persona games. But that's pretty obvious if you look around my channel! 😀
You will also notice my fondness for anything Xenoblade.
I would also add Atelier games and pretty much any RPG by Falcom.

I wasn't personally a huge fan of this game (one of the few anti- Garl folks out there 😓) but I will always appreciate the thought the devs put towards design. Clearly, a similar level of thought went into these limited edition goodies. Nothing stunning but something worthwhile. Love the artwork in that manual!
