10 years old. 1957. Emigrating from Amsterdam to 🇨🇦, i was sitting looking out over the port wing. Long flight and could not sleep. The beauty of the tip tanks and the flexing of the wing was mesmerizing. Taxiing OVER a highway full of cars at Idlewild…I was in America. This little video brought back a lot of indelible early memories. Thanks.
Thank you Fred, I’m so glad that this has created a great memory for you. I certainly felt privileged to fly on this aircraft.
Don't worry about those flames. If the flames STOP coming out of the manifold, then worry.
Thanks for the view of the exhaust and the flames of those 18 cylinders..!!! Raw power old technology. Love the sound of those radials.
صوت يوحي بالشيخوخة ذاك الزمن
You're so lucky to have this amazing experience.
Beautiful. Just Beautiful! I'm back in the 40s watching this.
I love this video. You can hear every nuance of the pilot and flight engineer adjusting manifold vacuum pressure and propeller pitch settings then transitioning from full climb power to METO power. I traveled a few times on these old planes swinging iron when I was a kid and it was always a treat, but I do remember the engine noise on take off run was deafening.
Nothing will ever replace piston engines, I enjoy every moment of this vid, and I'm not even there :)
My Dad left West-Berlin in 1954 from Tempelhof-AP on board of a PAN AM-Connie sitting at wing position like the video shows. Engine #2 caught fire at full throttle therefore take off was aborted but nobody got nervous or even scared. The batch was extinguished quickly and after a repair break of only three hours she worked properly again and went back to air. Fine machine!
Where this was taken is the seat position that i had in 1955. At 5 years of age i was amazed at the sound and also the flames coming out of the exhaust ports. I remember the flames being bluish at night, with a orange flicker. It took six to seven hours to cross the county from LA to NY. Mom took me and my bother 3 times across the country in 1955 and '56 in the TWA Constellation. And I always got the window seat across from the engines. I will never forget those trips. It was really first class then, even got to go to the cockpit to see the Captain..... Got a Jr Pilot's Certificate, too.
I flew from Frankfurt to Berlin in a Super Conny at the same age, in pretty much the same seat position. It was an awesome experience...
I've flown on the "Save-A-Connie" Super "H" Constellation three times between Kansas City and Chicago back in the 1990's. All your sound effects here bring back memories of those precious flying memories!
Hats off to the boys at Lockheed for giving us the Connie- she's one of the most powerful, yet elegant, planes of her generation, I only wish I'd been around in the days when she was the princess of the air-
If jelousy made one really turn green i'd be green as a frog. Brilliant man totaly great. You are one lucky guy. Awesome footage.
I just got flash backs from the days long ago when piston driven passenger planes flew over our house. We were on the flight path for the Buffalo (NY) airport and every time a piston plane flew over and we were watching TV, the TV screen would "flicker" until the plane was past us. Then the jets came and no more TV flicker.
I'd give anything to see them old beauties flying over my house again and hear the sounds they so proudly gave us.
Thanks for the great video...
*smile*... both aircraft enjoyed their own charisma; the Connies, DC-6 and like ilk were at the top of the food chain for their genre'; spacious, comfortable and a feel all their own, but those early, unmuffled 707's with the water injection shook the earth and unquestionably made music like nothing else since. Each aircraft embodied it's own claim to aviation romance. I transited the "DC-3" generation into the "jet set", revering both respective eras held fondest nostalgia
My dad flew the Connie as captain for Capital Airlines in the 1950's. He said it was s sturdy beast that was honest in it's handling. The 18 cylinder Write Cyclone engines were powerful and provided plenty of vibration.
Reminds me of the B17 ride my youngest brother bought my middle brother and I for working on his house. I was on the first of the two flights and got to experience the engine start!!! Given the history of this air craft, and how tough they are I never felt as safe in an aircraft as this one. Also, if anyone has ever said "it was so noisy I couldn't hear myself yell", that is how noisy a B17 is inside.
Best music ever! Thank you for posting this great tribute to the Lockheed Super Constellation.
Love the sound of those Wright motors, beats the obnoxious sound of a jet any day!!! Long live piston engined planes!!!
thats what i like most about vintage propeller planes, if you were on one of these during the night, take off would give you and other passengers quite the firework show
@PappyTF My first experience was when I flew on a BA Boeing 757 and was hooked from then on. I was eleven and at twelve, I wanted to be a pilot, but never had the ability. You are so lucky.
always makes ya feel good when the propeller blades start spinning the opposite way
Took a half hour flight on this the other week......smells like an old car...lol...luv this plane.
flutters like a majestic bird. Enjoyed your video. Thank You.
Good video and good take-off.
what a beauty, id love to fly one one of those one day, nothing like old propliners to brighten up a persons day =)
Nice! Must have been a ONCE IN A LIFETIME experience. Lucky you ...
Thanks for posting ... :-)
I flew on the connies many times in the late 50's to and from Africa to the states...a different era, to be sure.
When the 707's came into service, we were all flabbergasted at the size, speed and comfort which were light years away from the prop-jobs.
A long time ago now.
Beautiful video; thanks for the look-back. :)
What an amazing noise! Turboprops just sound so much more pathetic in power compared to these babies, not to mention planes like the Connie, DC-6, and DC-7 are MUCH larger than pretty any turboprop currently in commercial airline service today. Sadly, because of jets most propliners are much smaller. Can't believe you actually got the opportunity to fly a Connie! Love the flames.
Beautiful. And I remember just how loud those engines were too.
I love it. Just think of all the people watching in awe from below!
imagine having to fly across the atlantic in one of those, yeah sure it would be nice, but at a top speed of only 330 mph the trip would take about 10-13 hours depending on weather conditions
nice video brucek68, thanks to your video, I have had the opertunity to see from the inside what it must have been like to travel on Connie. My mom and dad flew one from St. Louis to Los Angeles in 1955.
A beautiful bird, I hope to be fortunate enough to fly in one someday.
Amazing video thank you for sharing it.
The sound of those R-3350 Cyclones is priceless, the B-29 Superfortress got to live on in the connie, my farther flew the constellations for TWA after flying B-17s after the war, he loved the connie, Thanks.
Majestic...simply majestic. And you can actually see the pitch of the props taking a 'bigger bite' as power is set to cruise.
The illusion that the propellers are barely moving is amazing.
wow, brings back fond memories of her; those mighty 3350's putting out and oooooohhh what a melody at full chat !!
these are just superb visual and sound effects! great aircraft!
the sound of those big props is incredible
Love the video. Thanks for sharing. Made my day.
You know, as odd as this may sound, the only time I have *ever* been able to sleep on a plane, was during a hop from VanNuys to LAX and back on a super-connie during the VanNuys air show. Something about the chatter of a big radial just puts me out like a light.
flew home from Kimpo, Korea to San Francisco in 1964 ETS from US ARMY - MATS and we faced the rear of the aircraft and box lunch - stopped in Anchorage, AK a couple of days following the big earthquake, they hadn't re-set the clocks in the airport which stopped at the time of the earthquake that was May and the mountains surrounding the airport were still snow covered - what a trip
now imagine flying in one of these on a transatlantic flight from NYC to london. at a top speed of only 330 mph it would take 10 and 1/2 hours to complete that flight
Love the Flames!!!!
Nice Job!
Love the sound!
hats off to howard hughes. he's the one who loved it. and chose it for his airline, TWA
truly, the Queen majesty of airliners.....3350s sound great, never tire of her good looks
Absolutely beautifull baby
omg
Thank you for sharing
Taking sixteen hours to cross the Atlantic ocean doesn't make me feel too nostalgic.
I also have flown about 37 charlie, and yes, the sounds are right and the memories wonderful! thanks.
Host: Sir, we cannot silence 18 rose-shaped presses
Nice way to compare the different types of engines. Radial engines are like steam powered locomotives. They almost have a soul. Living and breathing, mechanical parts, moving in all kinds of different directions, trying to tear themselves apart. High-strung and tempermental, needing constant attention. In return, enable you to go places where you have never been able to go before...
Thats just frigging AWESOME if anything just for the shear mechanical magnitude of these old birds.
The Lufthansa brings a Super Constellation in service in one or two years... can't wait for it :)
WHAT?!@#$?!@#!??!?!
they canceled the Starliner - Project.😭
certainement le plus beau des avions de ligne !
Cool. Great video.
LOVE the flames!
i flew on one in 1961 i was 7 one engine on the right side went out between charlstown and bermuda . another one on the left went out between there and madrid
Flew in this some months back.....when it starts accelerating down the runway it really does have the feel of a jet....it really goes hard...and it not that noisy.
I love Conkies a Lot!!!
This_is_spectacular! A flight aboard a vintage prop liner is one of those bucket list things for me. Buffalo Airways still has a regularly scheduled DC3 service and I'm doing that this summer. A Connie sure would be fine though :D
When I see flames shooting out the twin-row 18 cylinders exhaust and I’m not paying for the high octane 115/145 Avgas and I’ve got my ear plugs, , then I know everything’s okay! 😀 👍 listening to these engines on a long flight would definitely put me to sleep.
Why do people enjoy listening to birds, sea, surf and forests? This is so much better!
How right you are! And what kind of music!
This video is awesome =0
Hi, Chuck. I grew up in Batavia, and remember the same thing. The audio would sound like an engine. Coolest thing.
@brucek68 May GOD bless you bruce. my grandfather built these, my great uncle flew them, although me and ms connie never got to ride together, ive gotten to ride in a dc3, a b17, and maybe one day a connie. AND ive found ( thanks to you) the perfect alarm clock, thanks to you, my pc, and 1100 watts of amplifier
Meraviglioso.....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I speculate the following without ANY fear of contradiction.
I bet EVERY Pilot, Co/Pilot that day at Kingsford Smith International Airport, (Mascot), who saw this magnificent aeroplane taxi past or near them, or saw Her from a distance, paused, however fleetingly, drew a deep breath, and silently sighed.
If you were aircrew who saw Her that day, and did nothing, you have no soul, shame!, shame!.
!So exciting!!! :D
AWESOMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE as hell:')
you wanna talk about raw power....wowww those bad boys out there on the wing just pumping it out.... awsome.. the closest I ever came to that was a c130 ride from okie to the phillipines...that was kool too tho....
Now that is hardcore.
THE 3350'S AFTER GETTING TO ALTITUDE AND THE POWER REDUCTION BY THE FLT. ENG. JUST RUMBLE. SWEET.
Just like the old days...
Nice video;-)
Best part of the was take off, second part was at 3:23! Sleepy time...zzzz. It's been a very long time since heard those old gals....
Fantastic Video!
why there are those flames?
When I was in the Army, a small few airlines still had 4-engine props running yet. I wanted to fly on one but never did.
BTW, I now live outside of Batavia in Pembroke.
Love the drone sound in the last 10 seconds (after trottle back and level flight?). That's what you used to hear from the ground.
Jeeze look at those flames
Kind of hazordous...
i would love to go on this baby...
Cool vid, BTW.
True that Bruce! =)
I'll never forget watching Eastern's Connies fly up the coast of Fort Lauderdale after departure from FLL....
Nice
hey mate who much was it to go for a fly in the connie coz i want to do it love the plane thanks nice vid
I forgot: this vídeo brang me he opportuniy ti fly in this Connie throuh this vídeo. I would like to fly in one Connie in a future. Thanks for share ir.
I don't think that the engines were of the turbo compounded type judging by the exhaust stacks. The compound engines were not manufactured by Pratt and Whitney but by Wright manufacturing.................I could be wrong on this assessment.
You are right, but they are compound.
For the same reason jets and any other aircraft reduce power after takeoff - to reduce fuel consumption, extend the life of the engines, and reduce noise.
Love the video but I believe north south runway 2 departure to the north...
Is there a passenger seat right in line with the prop?
what isnt there to love about the sound of a piston engine ??
Are flames a natural occurrence in piston prop liners?
Damn, that's loud. How did people actually enjoy their flights back then with such loud engines? Does it quiet down after awhile? Is there a system in place to reduce the sound that enters the cabin?
remind me to bring earplugs when and if i fly on 1 of those
ill bet takeoff inside that plane was pretty noisey, which would be cool with me since i love the sounds of noisey engines. is that normal for flames to come out of the exhaust like that?
Sydney airport no less!
In Australia, when you get into an elevator, and hit the button for the top floor, are you going up? or Down?
