At the end of the 1930s, roughly 70,000 Jews from Central Europe fled the Nazis and found refuge in Britain. They became British as well as European citizens when London joined the European Economic Community in 1973. But the current Brexit process has pushed a significant number of British Jews to apply for German passports. Florence Gaillard, Cécile Khindria and Haxie Meyers-Belkin report.

There was this Jewish guy in my Uni who had 4 passports; USA, Chile, Israel and Poland. The Polish one allowed him to study free in Europe. Not bad right?

WTF is this about? My parents born in the 1920s fled Germany and Austria and were welcomed to the UK and became proud British citizens. My father used to say that not only no one in the UK ever called him a dirty Jew but no one even asked if he was a Jew. They rejected all overtures to reclaim the citizenship of their birth which was taken from them and I can't even begin to understand the motivations behind this disgusting story linking the holocaust to Brexit. The only thing here is people seeking a loophole in nationality laws to avoid the consequences of Brexit. That is understandable but this emotive and entirely inappropriate linkage of the holocaust to a democratic decision in the 21st century is utterly reprehensible and I say that as someone who voted to remain in the EU.
Well, the Jews have theor loyalty to Israel first, so for them, they have no connection to UK, Russia, Germany, because their only homeland is their holy land.
My parents fled Uganda under Idi Amin. I would NEVER want to have Ugandan citizenship. The UK gave us so much not least saving my parents from goodness knows what fate.

I find it extremely interesting to hear that young man talk about Germany and deciding against German citizenship. It reminded me of my Irish Grandmother who absolutely hated the British with all her heart and made sure everyone knew it. The British should watch when they throw stones.

Allegiance. And I believe that people should make decisions about these things in their own best interests. I am going to be moving out of my country to another one and taking steps to live there legally on a long term basis, and that will probably include a change to my citizenship. It's in my best interest to do so, no hard feelings to my birth nation but I need to do what is right for me

The German constitution along with the German Statute of National Allegiance do give the right to apply for German citizenship in certain cases of unlawful (in retrospect) expulsion of relatives by German authorities under Nazi governance. So yes. Whether the persons, who have been granted German citizenship by invoking their aforementioned rights, may keep their British citizenship as well has to be stipulated by the respective applicable British law (I'm German, so I do not know. But I guess UK does not allow double allegiance). In the latter case the UK citizenship would be revoked by British authorities after the person concerned received German citizenship.
@@darkawakening01 It is perfectly legal. He received US citizenship by being born in the States and the US allows multiple citizenship. Britain also allows multiple citizenship and does not restrict it. Germany does allow multiple citizenship in certain situations, but it is much more restricted than the other countries. In this case, because he was granted citizenship because his relatives were forcibly expelled from Germany during Hitler's regime, he is allowed to retain all previous citizenships. So in a nutshell, in this instance it is completely legal in all 3 countries to have multiple citizenship.

It appears this man is not too sure where he should be ! Born in the USA, lives in the UK and yet, hankers after Germany because it is part of the EU. The EU is simply a Political Union of nations and a concept twisted out of proportion from its original purpose, a nation of trading partners. Why would anyone go back to a nation where they were persecuted, and today, Germany is playing the same game it did at the turn of the Century, albeit, non militarily. Is it not the strongest nation in the EU ?! Is the main industrial output from Germany?! etc etc Isn't Herr Merkel running the show?...it certainly appears that way and by her own hand displacing her own citizens through mass immigration. Another attempt to make Brits feel guilty about something happening to the Jews via the Brexit vote. I'm waiting for Brexit to be blamed for extreme weather in the US ! Germans have caused two World Wars because of their political aspirations. Ignore History and you are doomed to repeat it....although , this time, by a different method I suspect.

Edward (the older man) has 3 passports, and no doubt he takes the best of each country he can reside in, and avoids the worst. He is exploiting his personal situation, and complaining about it, whilst at the same time criticizing British people who voted to leave the EU because they simply want their country back. They want the best and worst of their single country. Edward has no allegiance and therefore gets no respect from me. Jake (the younger man) has chosen not to claim his German heritage on principle, and therefore I respect him and his position.
I have no problem with people choosing to immigrate or live wherever they want, providing they do it legally.
Europe will soon be an Islamic State so I expect most of the Jews that are leaving will be back within a decade or so.....
