My friend wasn’t a fan of rap music because he thought it was pointless. I slowly introduced him to Kendrick Lamar so he can understand that their are deeper meanings. At times rap is probably the most deep you can get into a song.
I've always said that Ben was probably that nerd in school that got picked on by everyone, even the other nerds. Like he'd remind the teacher about all the homework, and would ask for pop quizzes.
"Hip hop doesn't have harmony or melody" This instantly hit me because not only is it wrong, it's so wrong that it ignores the fact that melody is often in there CASUALLY rather than to try to make a hook or chorus. Freddie Gibbs' Freestyle Shit comes to mind and is the reason I made this comment. Specifically the line "When this music shit weren't movin', man/I said I might as well be movin' thangs." He SINGS those lines. There is a UNIQUE MELODY to those lines. Freddie Gibbs is not exactly a singer, in my opinion, but the fact that he sang that when he could have just said it implies that melody and harmony are intrinsically part of delivery. The way words are said, how they're enunciated, often harmonize with the instrumental or sample. Also see: JOBA from BROCKHAMPTON, who more often than not PROVIDES MELODIC VERSES (I can instantly think of his verse on SWAMP). Most of the time not even autotuned, which I'd say Ben Shapiro would probably discount from the concept of melody and harmony in vocals.

Ben claiming that music has to have rhythm melody *and* harmony to make it music basically means he's claiming "I'm a classically trained musician" is a flat out lie. Because as you know... playing any instrument alone and not with a band of other instruments alongside you, is not music. If I start singing right now, it's not music because there aren't any drums or harmonies behind me right now.
I listen to music that moves me. Rap, or anything hip hop related in the last 25 years doesn't do it for me, so I ignore it. I simply don't listen to it. I don't spend time hating on things that I dislike because I'm too busy focusing on the things I DO like.
"jazz is a degradation of classical" Jazz is like the hardest genre to master. Or even start with. So many people say that you gotta learn jazz to master the craft lmao
Not necessarily it’s the hardest genre to master. It’s just that most jazz is by ear and that style has just vaporized. But yeah, it’s probably the hardest to start with
Both Classical music and Jazz are the hardest. Classical composers are probably the closest things to musical geniuses ever. The layers and training it takes to be a good Classical artist is the most complicated. Jazz is known for being the most perfected having to play the instrument very well. There was a quote saying "if you don't have ability you wind up playing in a rock band" so I'd say Classical and Jazz are by far the hardest to master.
Man he is so wrong in fact it is funny. He says that there is Rhythm, Melody and Harmony in music. He states that Rap only fulfills only one of these and that is Rhythm. But singing also just fulfills two of these, which is again Rhythm and also Melody. I doubt that Ben would not consider singing a form of music, but that does not fit his definition
As a liberal latino whose dad dislikes rap I understand what he means, but he says it in such a godawful way that it just becomes racism about halfway through. There's tons of reasons one may dislike rap, from the oftentimes that rap lacks melody, or even just that you prefer singing to rapping sonically, but you can't say it isn't music. Saying that it isn't music because it lacks musical elements is just wrong. It isn't even a matter of the music, he just dislikes music that is different and new and unique and has potential to cause so much change.
Everytime you see people arguing about any topic that they dont understand anything about in the internet just remember that there is people like ben shapipo in this world
Saying rap is no form of music is like saying poetry is not a form of art. Rap is literally poetry combined with melodic fluctuations scructured on a MUSICAL instrumental. Lyrically there is no genre matching rap in depth, profound lyrics make you really think and mozard is just great in the moment. Not discarding his genius but with rap you gotta think back and with every listen of a good song you pick up more and more, rhymes, wordplay and all that. I believe this guy just doesnt know about a lyrical depth existing in rap or he is just arrogant about it. Could also be he wants to upset people to get attention
"The sample in the background is high pitched which sounds like a young girl, while Jcole "degrades" women. Therefore it promotes underrage sex." - An actual human being
He says rock and rap are both Degration of their previous genres like blues and jazz because their too simple but like making guitar solos and riffs and rhyming are both complex skills 💀
Im not too well versed on what makes music music, I just know that if all rap listeners treat it as music, react to it as music, listen to it like music and are moved by it or affected by it like music AND rap is accessed pretty much the same way all other music is accessed, then I dont think an opinion from one guy about 'calling' it music matters all that much. Btw, it my first time hearing your voice, and I was pleasantly surprised :)
For someone who claims to have a "Musical Background" he clearly hasn't listened to rap music closely enough to recognize melody and or harmony that's sequenced within the beat. I'd like to debate Ben Shapiro on this topic. I originated learning music and music theory as a violinist in an orchestra and is giving violin lessons along side of being a producer. I can factual disprove his statements.
Its not real music though.... It has musical elements, such as ripped(sampled) real music taken from real, actual music, but any musicality there might be in rap music almost exclusively was NOT written by the rapper themselves.
Do you realize how stupid you sound right now? “It has sampled music taken from real music” mf what the fuck are you talking about? None of this comment even makes any sense. Explain to me how rap isn’t real music, and use English this time.
There's so many rappers/artists that can disprove him in an instant. Rakim, Eminem, Tupac, Kendrick, Juice Wrld, DMX (I can continue). HELL AN R&B ARTIST CAN DISPROVE HIM😂💀.
while this was a great video with many great criticisms i think Duplee went a bit soft on ben at certain points and tried to be a bit too centrist on this topic because while its good to make sure your not singling one side out its is still unequivocally true that republicans are the much much bigger problem on this specific topic of rejecting not only black but new and evolving cultures
Black culture is cancerous. But it doesn't have to be. That's the position of the right. The left, on the other hand says "black culture has no problems, society is just really mean and hates black people." The fact that you think the Republicans are in the wrong here shows a grave misunderstanding of the world.
5:17 This goes beyond not understanding rap, this is just a blatant misunderstanding of music itself. This is something my 4th grade music teacher would say in order to give us a super rudimentary understanding of music. If we took Ben's stupid little definition seriously, that would invalidate 99.9% of all contemporary music. By proxy this would mean that percussionists aren't musicians because they "only account for the rhythm section."
I accept his decision to like what he likes. He prefers Mozart over rap is music to his ears and that's ok. We have to respect other people's preference in music, just like whoever loves rap is allowed to love it also. I understand how he doesnt approve of the vulgarity, profanity & oversexualized expression that rap music always display, I get it. My Mom likes some positive rap music except for the rachet songs that promote sex, drugs, violence, killing, jail time, drama or anything negative at all. She doesn't care too much for that type of songs. I personally love and respect the stories behind the struggles in early rap, its great poetry & musical talent in many artists. The rachet stuff I still listen to & bop to bc some songs are hypnotizing lol. Theres nothing wrong with wanting more decency, traditional morals & value in one's musical preference vs spreading corrupt msgs. What has music become & why are we exposing our kids to this indecent, vulgar music? I guess it changes with the times so whatever is going on in society & in the world around us will be revealed in rap music & accepted as our new normal...lol
Jerry Garcia said the same thing, because rap isn’t music. It’s actually more like slam poetry with a melody over it, played by and created by..actual musicians*. There’s nothing wrong with slam poetry at all. But there is a problem with it when it’s target audience is children and the lyrics contain images and messages promoting gang violence drug abuse and alcoholism.

My response to Ben saying that rao doesn't take much skill would have been "you try it then"
Well.. he rapped and it was awful lmao.
My friend wasn’t a fan of rap music because he thought it was pointless. I slowly introduced him to Kendrick Lamar so he can understand that their are deeper meanings. At times rap is probably the most deep you can get into a song.
Anything can be pointless if you are ignorant enough
I've always said that Ben was probably that nerd in school that got picked on by everyone, even the other nerds. Like he'd remind the teacher about all the homework, and would ask for pop quizzes.
"Hip hop doesn't have harmony or melody"
This instantly hit me because not only is it wrong, it's so wrong that it ignores the fact that melody is often in there CASUALLY rather than to try to make a hook or chorus.
He's like that one kid who never grew out of his junior high conservative phase. It's like he's playing a character, it's crazy.
dude is acting like rap doesn’t have harmony and melody either😭😭😭

Ben Shapiro is about as masculine as Michael Jackson, and as tough as Drake
Kind of hard to put MJ and Drake in the same sentence these days.
(cough) Kendrick v Drake Beef
Ben uses the word Rapper like a slur
This is a classic example of 'I do not know what I am talking about or have any real knowledge on the subject so I am just going to trash on the subject and hate on the art'. I understand that some rap lyrics aren't exactly hard to make or that the content often be morally challenging at least for those with certain views but rap is an art form, 'Rhythm and Poetry' and a way of expressing who you are and what you are dealing with.
The lyrics in rap is enough to throw it in the trash it teaches people to be like the lyrics like a good propaganda piece why isn't anyone smart enough to see that rap shit is fucked up

He says that rock is a degradation from jazz from classical then ignores the fact that classical could be considered a degradation from baroque music by the same token
I was planning on watching this video the other night bc I thought it had been uploaded. I'm real happy rn. Keep up these videos about music in general they're entertaining af. My problem isn't that raps not for him it's that he doesn't respect it as music like any actual musician would. This is coming from a multi instrumentalist singer songwriter if that makes my point valid to any conservatives (not that it really should) Even before I started really getting into rap I still respected it as art and I got how people liked it and wanted to also (I guess my brain just had to get used to it to get secretion and there were exceptions). I feel that his white conservative evangelical upbringing made him feel superior as a classical musician to not just rap but alot of contemporary genres. I'm sure the fact that alot of his audience doesn't like it either makes him pander to and the vulgarity is a big turn off for conservatives. Not saying that this is the case for all and not even most classical musicians but definitely for Ben as an evangelical. I enjoy most genres of music so that's my take. Anyway keep up the good work.
Yes I commented this twice lmao
Bro made 2 videos criticizing Barbie that were over an hour long. He is not right in the head at all 💀

Bro literally did a feature on a rap song now
5:48 rap as fast as eminem
5:52 rhyme as well as MF DOOM
5:55 To Pimp A Butterfly
the only thing he seems to admire in music is the work put in, but most of the time he doesn't even acknowledge the fact there is a lot of work being put in. if it's so easy, i'd like to see him play the guitar like eddie van halen, sing as well as freddie mercury, or put in the production behind artists like radiohead and tame impala
Ben claiming that music has to have rhythm melody *and* harmony to make it music basically means he's claiming "I'm a classically trained musician" is a flat out lie. Because as you know... playing any instrument alone and not with a band of other instruments alongside you, is not music. If I start singing right now, it's not music because there aren't any drums or harmonies behind me right now.
this video aged very well, he made a song with tom macdonald, a shitty rapper
I listen to music that moves me. Rap, or anything hip hop related in the last 25 years doesn't do it for me, so I ignore it. I simply don't listen to it. I don't spend time hating on things that I dislike because I'm too busy focusing on the things I DO like.

"jazz is a degradation of classical"
Jazz is like the hardest genre to master.
By his logic, playing drums isn’t music because it’s a rhythmic instrument 🤡
As a liberal latino whose dad dislikes rap I understand what he means, but he says it in such a godawful way that it just becomes racism about halfway through. There's tons of reasons one may dislike rap, from the oftentimes that rap lacks melody, or even just that you prefer singing to rapping sonically, but you can't say it isn't music. Saying that it isn't music because it lacks musical elements is just wrong. It isn't even a matter of the music, he just dislikes music that is different and new and unique and has potential to cause so much change.
I'm a right wing conservative and what Ben said about rap is absolutely fucking retarded he deff is a geek for that

Ben would rip up one of his kid's drawings because it doesn't properly use color theory and perspective.
Dude like an unlikable Sheldon

He's married and faithful to his wife. "women" don't mean anything to him now. Foreign concept to rap fans, I know.

He says rock and rap are both Degration of their previous genres like blues and jazz because their too simple but like making guitar solos and riffs and rhyming are both complex skills 💀
Love how in the vid of Ben Shapiro buying wood from home Depot it's in a bag. Like the bag covers 1/6th of the fucking wood
ben shapiro is incredibly worried about classiness, and promotes Mozart when one of his most famous songs is literally called "lick my arse"🗿

No he only debates freshman college students with equally wacky ideas to make him seem smarter than he actually his
For someone known for saying, “facts don’t care about your feelings,” he sure does talk about his opinion a lot.
And then Ben Shapiro made a song with Tom Macdonald
His argument doesn't even make sense because a shit ton of rap songs have melodic beats and incorperate layers for harmonization.
HELL AN R&B ARTIST CAN DISPROVE HIM😂💀.
it's like he is straight outta the 1400s and trying to roast honestly one of the best rappers we've ever had
while this was a great video with many great criticisms i think Duplee went a bit soft on ben at certain points and tried to be a bit too centrist on this topic because while its good to make sure your not singling one side out its is still unequivocally true that republicans are the much much bigger problem on this specific topic of rejecting not only black but new and evolving cultures
Yea my thoughts exactly
Black culture is cancerous. But it doesn't have to be. That's the position of the right.
The left, on the other hand says "black culture has no problems, society is just really mean and hates black people."
The fact that you think the Republicans are in the wrong here shows a grave misunderstanding of the world.
3:50 i agree with almost this entire video except this, this is new age dad drip and no one can tell me otherwise

A good majority of rap songs have melodies and sometimes collab with singers who are the harmony and the beats are rhythmic
