I see in the article it says the ammo is loaded to mag length. I have seen some other articles where they say the ammo is loaded "long"...which i assume is longer than mag length. If this ammo is mag length...then why isnt he using the mag? just out of habit? if one is not going to use a mag, then do you need to crimp the rounds or even use a cannelure to start with? Using the sling as a height spacer is not considered support. That rule is meant to prohibit using the sling in what’s called the “hasty sling” support method which involves wrapping your arm around it to create a triangle of support. The “hasty sling” technique does work and a good rifleman should know how to implement it particularly for hunting use.
Anything that covers the sharp rails so they don't tear your glove up works. Use either thin ones or thick ones as you prefer. They all get the job done.
a dumb question. I always hear that "ARs arent accurate" etc. Then how are CMP shooters routinely hitting x ring at 200 yrds?? Are these highly modified ARs or mostly stock? handloads or factory ammo? What MOA would someone like Dan be hitting if he took that same gun and shot off a bipod or bags??
That is a misnomer. The M-16/AR-15 system is one of the most accurate series of rifles ever invented. They are capable of shooting around 1 moa with a free floated barrel and good ammunition. Most of the accuracy problems with the gun start to the rear of the buttplate. Marksmanship matters.

Burning an average between 2,000 to 5,000 rounds per year in training and matches, its uneconomic otherwise. The economics are that you can shoot two to three rounds for every factory round. That's a lot of affordability leverage. Given that, please also note that the load combinations that work for XTC shooting are pretty standard at this point.

Yes. CMP and NRA Service Rifle competition is done primarily with 20” barrels. However, the same shot technique principles apply with any other type of rifle, including the 16” variants of the AR-15, when used for this type of offhand target shooting.
