Our local school district had an air raid siren on their office building/fall out shelter, but I think it's been gone for a while. It sucks we never got our grubby little paws on it because our station whistle hasn't worked in a couple years & the FD won't replace it because we all have pagers & phones.
Frank, I used to be able to hear siren activations from my house when I was a kid, but the sirens near me have since gone silent and one of them has been taken down. The siren that got taken down was at the fire department almost due north of me. From a brother in Lewisburg, PA, God Bless and stay safe.

In the early 70s here in the UK we had sirens before the bleeds came out to turn out the retained fire personnel
