I strongly believe that the ending solo is one of the greatest of all time... Just beautiful guitar playing, full of emotion! Nobody can make a guitar sing like Mark Knopfler
Agreed. Gives me chills every time. That little coda at the end, the painful resonance. Knopfler is that rare mix of an articulate AND soulful guitarist
Absolutely! The Outro guitar solo perfectly captures the emotion of a man looking back on an event from half his lifetime ago where he let a woman walk away and still regrets it. Only Mark Knopfler could write and play this so poignantly.
The only better solo I have ever heard, is the same song at the Dire Straits Thank You Australasia concert. The melancholy of the song's topic is so beautifully and perfectly expressed with the guitar solo. Remembering with joy about a wonderful day and simultaneously kicking oneself at letting an opportunity go. Douglas Adams said that Mark Knopfler plays guitar like angels singing after a few stuff beers at the pub ))
The guitar solo at the end of this song is ...it's one of the GREATEST EVER.........PERIOD. Still after hundreds of listens over decades I still hang on every note. So expressive....amazing. Mark Knopfler and the Fender Strat were made for each other.
This is my go to, Dire straits song, this is a special song, remembering me and a few Irish guys and 1 was a big fan like me singoing it at like 5am in a bar in Thailand 1 morning Love seeing people discovering then for the 1st time, I'm glade u found them, enjoy
Telegraph Road, from the Love Over Gold album is magnificent! It starts out differently...it’s slow and builds and builds, telling a great story, with one of Mark’s best solos that goes on for minutes. Hope to see you enjoying it!
I think Douglas Adams summed it up the best. “Mark Knopfler has an extraordinary ability to make a Schecter Custom Stratocaster hoot and sing like angels on a Saturday night, exhausted from being good all week and needing a stiff drink.” Douglas Adams, So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish This is the song lives up to the expression better than any other.
It Was VERY Special To Hear These Guys LIVE While They Were Together! INCREDIBLE!!🎸🎶...Red Rocks, Colorado August 1986🎉🎸🎸🙌🎶✊🎉 UNFORGETTABLE!! But Don't Just Stop With Dire Straits! There Is Tons Of Solo Mark Knopfler To Enjoy! And His Brother, Davids' Solo Work, Too!
Dire Straits are one of my favourite groups of all time. They were the first band I ever declared my favourite, at the age of five. So glad to see someone else loving their music as much as I do.
Dire Straits do it better live. That's saying something coz the studio versions are great. But it's more fun watching Mark and band perform live. Usually they extend the song with longer guitar solos 😊 Cheers. I love Telegraph Road Live Alchemy 1983
@@Lilly8Listens indeed, I watched the whole concert so many times. Incredible performance. Being from Australia that final concert brings back great times and memories of the great 80's 🙂
Adogg this is tame compared to the live concerts, the sound is out of this world and the whole experience lasts longer. Wembley and Alchemy, wonderful.
I saw them 32 years ago still the best band I’ve ever seen live. Mark is my favourite guitarist ever he’s still brilliant to this day. Any dire straits is worth a listen but as many as you can find live is worth it they rarely played the same song the same way twice.
Just for a bit of background, the Spanish City - referred to in the song - is a leisure centre inin the north east of England where Mark Knopfler and and his brother David used to hang out when they were kids. It was an iconic place.
Pick Withers gives a drumming master class in this song, driving the song without overwhelming it and building the foundation for Mark Knopfler to do what he does. Knopfler uses space and quiet very effectively, and with the rock-solid Withers behind him he doesn't have to fill all the space; the groove is always there.
Song is about the Spanish City and Whitley Bay - a seaside town in North east England, the former was a permanent fun fair... worked there one summer in the early 1960s... there is a permanent monument in that beautiful little town to this song and Dire Straits
Mark knopfler live is awesome, never plays a song the same way twice. Tunnel of love alchemy live and live at Wembley are just something else. That end solo is just perfect. Top 3 solos ever
PLEASE PLEASE, the live version at Wembley Stadium is out of this world, the live versions of Dire Straits are always the best. Listen to it at your leisure, you won't be disappointed....
You have to check out the live versions of this song, especially the one at Wembley. The solo at the end in the live versions are so beautiful that you don't want the song to end.
As a brilliant showcase of Mark's Stratocaster virtuoso, you have to hear LOCAL HERO. It's a live cut that just blows me away every time. way up there on David Gilmour's level.
After Dire Straits disbanded, lead singer/songwriter/guitarist Mark Knopfler started a solo career in 1995. Every bit as good as Dire Straits. Check out Sailing to Philadelphia (with James Taylor), What it Is, Border Riever, and so many more. Mark is one of my all time favorite artists. I really enjoy your videos, keep it up! 👍🏼
My favourite living guitarist- well, tied with Jeff Beck (note that they're both finger pickers). His fluidity and lyricism are matched only by Jeff Healey (R.i.P.)... add in Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page, voilá- the all- time list. Me being an old soldier- kinda partial to "Brothers in Arms". Peace from Canada. You're doing a great job, Adogg- good on you for keeping your mind open. btw my fave concert ever: stevie ray vaughan and double trouble opened for Mark and the boys... mind blown night.
Mark has continued to produce outstanding music since Dire Straight ,w orking with many other top musicians , composing for movies , etc. Still one of the most outstanding guitar players.
Thank you for reacting to this song I haven’t heard it for a long time. Been a huge fan of DS & Mark Knopfler since 1980, was lucky to see them live numerous times in the 80’s, best experience ever 😃
Their live versions are always the best as they really let rip with their musical talent live. They are a local Band. This song is about the Spanish City in Whitley Bay which at the time they and myself were growing up was an amusement fun park with rides etc all the kids used to visit. Now it is a posh restaurant complex.
I love how You feel the experience of Dire Straits. They have not lost their magic. Btw: they have also songs that starts very smooth... Like "Ride across the River" or "Private Investigations". Look for live versions (eg, from the Alchemy Live Album), they're better than studio versions.
Man, I forgot how much I like that piano ru at the end of the song. Dire Striats are such good story tellers. Still going to recommend Brothers in Arms, Private Investigations, and Skateaway.

As others have said the live performances are so much better, not constrained at all, and they go on for longer and sound more powerful. Alchemy and Wembley 85 and you can't go wrong. You'll make an old lady happy adog and a lot more than a few as well...
I upset alot of my Friends when they asked me who I thought was the best Guitarist in my opinion. I come from Johnny Marr John Squire David Gilmore Joey Santiago flavour. He was top. Becuase hes's so good and the timing of growing up influenced me so much. His Vocals and lyrics defined a period in the eighties. North England Sage
If you're going to carry on with Dire Straits, anything from Wembley and Alchemy live, they really are the best versions. You're sure doing well Adog nearly a 100.000 subscribers. WELL DONE 😇
Hey Dude always find a live performance if you can. It gives Mark more time to expand the songs. If you want an emotional song (seems to get to everyone) try Brothers in Arms. There are loads of live versions. Tunnel Of Love is brilliant though. This song relates to the area of the North East of England around Whitley Bay and especially the "Spanish City". When this was refurbished they had the words to Tunnel Of Love embossed in the stone work.
The Spanish City was a permanent, seaside funfair, the North Eastern version of Coney Island. I used to go there with my cousins. I'm not a great fan of fairground rides, but I loved the colours and the rock music. Before 1967, when the BBC started Radio One, there were few places where young British teenagers could hear rock music. Mark is singing about working on the Waltzer. The Waltzer guys were the coolest, and all the girls loved them. The Spanish City is no longer a funfair, but a function/music venue and when it was refurbished, the words 'Girl it looks so pretty to me, like it always did, like the Spanish City to me, when we were kids ' were carved outside. Mark didn't know about this, but was surprised and delighted when he found out.
Heavy Fuel is a very underrated song and in Basel/92 Mark starts with an awesome intro and during the song he has most of the time a nice smile on his face........probably likes the performance very much!:)
From An Officer n a Gentleman .. the bar scene where he stands her up but she styles Him out proper... Good movie Great Song 🎵 👌 👏 👍 🙌 one of the tracks that led me to picking up a guitar at 23 so if I can do it so can You Bruh..
Me again, you're really missing out, I've just watched Tunnel of Love Wembley 85 FANTASTIC VERSION. you're missing such a lot. Other reactors have reacted to other versions on their channels when advised of the best version, and they react to that then. Perhaps you can too.....
Please, please, please watch the live versions, they are mind blowing compared to the studio versions..after 40 years they still take my breath away… Mark Knopfler is a true genius from the story telling and composing to guitar playing from the heavens… they were on fire in ‘Alchemy Live’ my recommendation…pick any song ❤❤

Agree
I could not agree more. This solo tells a story by itself, bringing tears to the eyes material. Simply great and beautiful music.
What an exquisite song. And it's so lovely to watch you laugh with sheer joy!
The guitar solo at the end of this song is ...it's one of the GREATEST EVER.........PERIOD. Still after hundreds of listens over decades I still hang on every note. So expressive....amazing. Mark Knopfler and the Fender Strat were made for each other.

Princess Diana said this was her favorite group. Mark Knopfler composed and produced several film scores, including 'Princess Bride.'
Telegraph Road, from the Love Over Gold album is magnificent! It starts out differently...it’s slow and builds and builds, telling a great story, with one of Mark’s best solos that goes on for minutes. Hope to see you enjoying it!
"Tunnel Of Love" and "Telegraph Road" are both masterpieces.
Some one correct me if I’m wrong, but I think I saw somewhere that Mark Knoffler is self taught on the guitar. 👏
Mark is easily the most influential guitarist in my live his playing style is completely unique and I build all my style through him
Dire Straits....only live.....thank you :)
I think Douglas Adams summed it up the best.
“Mark Knopfler has an extraordinary ability to make a Schecter Custom Stratocaster hoot and sing like angels on a Saturday night, exhausted from being good all week and needing a stiff drink.”
Douglas Adams, So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish
This is the song lives up to the expression better than any other.
The live version of this from Wembley is spectacular
Let me hear an amen.
Yes it is spectacular and I think that the Thank You Australasia version is even better that that one!
Somebody said, "Most quitarist play solos. Mark Knopfler writes stories".
Mark Knopfler has unmatched wisdom.

♥ The videos don't always stand the test of time, but the music sure does. Dire Straits music is timeless.
Trust me on this. Dire Straits-Telegraph Road Live- aLCHEMY Tour 1983 My favorite Dire Straits performance. The ivories! and the guitars.
I grew up around colourcoats and whitey Bay in the 70s and 80s listening to this band.totaly brilliant
You need to hear the song Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits... it’s a lot more chilled but super powerful song with an iconic guitar riff
Dire Straits are one of my favourite groups of all time. They were the first band I ever declared my favourite, at the age of five. So glad to see someone else loving their music as much as I do.

Telegraph Road is a must listen from Dire Straits
Adogg this is tame compared to the live concerts, the sound is out of this world and the whole experience lasts longer.
Wembley and Alchemy, wonderful.
Dire Straits' 3rd album 'Making movies' is one of their best records 🔥🔥
Easily their best.
@@RicoBurghFan I'm fully with your statement."Easily" not because the rest of the albums are rubbish. Because Movies is so in a league of its own.
I lived near the Spanish City and went there often when I was young. This song always makes me nostalgic for those days.
I saw them 32 years ago still the best band I’ve ever seen live. Mark is my favourite guitarist ever he’s still brilliant to this day. Any dire straits is worth a listen but as many as you can find live is worth it they rarely played the same song the same way twice.

It still is an iconic place, beautifully restored in the last few years too!
Pick Withers gives a drumming master class in this song, driving the song without overwhelming it and building the foundation for Mark Knopfler to do what he does. The guitar solo is just brillent, up there wit comfortably numb, ! Classy songs

My favourite solo of all time. Wembley ' 85 I was there. Unbelievable.
I've been listening to this for 40 years and it still gives me chills. Love seeing you discover it. Now do Skateaway!
Mark knopfler live is awesome, never plays a song the same way twice. Tunnel of love alchemy live and live at Wembley are just something else. That end solo is just perfect. Top 3 solos ever

You gotta do the live version, from 1985 at Wembley....that is the best version. Brothers in Arms is also great
One of the beautiful sont i envers hear
Adogg try "Brothers in arms" I believe you'll like it. It's a different style from most Dire Straights songs but, really good.
