  • Dr Michael Mosley is a British journalist, scientist, producer and TV presenter.
Born in Kolkata, India, the son of a bank director, Mosley studied philosophy, politics and economics at New College, Oxford before working for two years as a banker in the City of London. He then decided to move into medicine, intending to become a psychiatrist, studying at the Royal Free Hospital Medical School. Becoming disillusioned by psychiatry, Mosley upon graduation joined a trainee assistant producer scheme at the BBC in 1985. He produced a number of science programmes, including 'The Human Face' with Professor Robert Winston, and the 2004 BBC Two engineering series 'Inventions That Changed the World'. His television presenting credits include 'Blood and Guts', 'Medical Mavericks' and 'The Story of Science', and 'The Truth About Exercise'.
He is the author of the million-copy bestselling '5:2 Fast Diet'. His last book is 'The 8-Week Blood Sugar Diet', which he co-wrote with Professor Roy Taylor.

What a loss to the nation, cannot believe this lovely man who educated us all in the simple basics that doctors DO NOT know, has passed. I'm on holidays in Spain from Ireland, have always watched him on TV and we have 2 of his books...devastated to be following the story the last few days. Never fear, he will live on in our healthy lives and sincere condolences to the lovely Claire and family, I know you are all so proud of what he brought to this life. May you have peace at some stage. He can never be replaced but he is a legend. ❤😢x

Found this after searching for his videos following the news of the discovery of his body. RIP Mr Mosley. What an amazing video, definitely one of the best on health that I have ever listened to. Such a huge loss as he talked SO MUCH sense with regard to health. Maybe even more people will look him up now which can only be a good thing for everyone's health. My thoughts are with his family and friends.

Dr Michael Mosley its hard to believe that you are not here probably you were out there doing a silent study on how heat and those hot environments can affect our bodies, you always were up for Educational programmes to help us improve our lives. It's so sad to different people that you always Motivated to stay healthier and manage a better healthy life. How I wish you knew and wrote as many more books. It is sad that you couldn't be found on time, it's hurting 😮😮😮😮. I pray that your son and wife you always mentioned in your speeches remain strong and be proud of your Legacy. God bless your Soul

It’s incredible how outdated diet is in British healthcare. To suggest cornflakes and white bread is massively negligent. Get them on a bowl of macadamia, almonds, goat cheese, sweet pepper, strawberries, with a touch of EVOO and ACV. Show them the goodness. After a fast I love some broiled brussel halves with EVOO and some bacon. It’s a great treat.

Lost 2 stone in 11 weeks on the blood sugar diet. Found it a relatively easy diet and I'm still continuing it. Losing on average 2lbs a week and in the 11 weeks I only increased weight for one week (due to a weekend away) and one week I stayed the same. All the other weeks I have lost weight. Food now tastes better and naturally sweeter, and sugary foods are so sweet they are horrible. This is a life and taste changing diet. My concern is how do I increase my food intake when I move to maintenance! This week I have fitted into a medium shirt for the first time in years. I am so pleased.

Just eat enough (quite a lot) plants/ fiber (your gut bacteria will thank you and your brain will as well ;) ) and eat nutritional dense foods. If you do that you automatically end up with things like whole wheat bread instead of white.
Honestly, I find our body quite a miracle that it can live so long on such unhealthy diets that are clearly deficient.

One thing I learned when I decided to not eat sugar is that the food industry puts sugar in every bleeping thing they make. This is only exaggerating a little bit. If you're buying prepared foods or foods in boxes or cans or packages just be sure to check unless you want to douse yourself with tons of added sugar. Also, if you have heart disease already, adding a whole bunch of fatty stuff to your diet could just about kill you. Just remember everyone is different genetically, and so what works for one person will not work for everyone. Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn a brilliant surgeon and diet counselor who has brought many back from the brink of death, recommends a very low fat diet.

The emphasis of the work of Dr. Roy Taylor is an 800cal/day diet for 8 weeks. And though he specifies a 3 shake/1 salad daily diet to achieve this, I found that this diet is so low in fiber that it caused serious issues. Any high fat, low card diet will do this - unless you find some way to get fiber in your diet. Dr. Mosley proposes (it seems) a fast of 2 days a week in which fiber demands are ignored. Apparently, the other 5 days are meant to consume a more normal balance of foods which includes fiber. I guess I need to get his book on the blood sugar diet.

This is fantastic but I'm really confused by Michael's comments about crash dieting. Surely crash dieting is bad because as soon as you finish it, and eat a *healthy* diet with more calories than you ate in your *crash* diet, your body will put on weight again, because you've confused your metabolic system... For weeks you've tricked it into thinking that there's a shortage of food available; which causes your metabolism to slow down (i.e. lower your temperature, produce less thyroid hormone, conserve as much fat as possible even though the calorie deficit is burning it up etc)... meaning that when you eventually eat healthily and lessen/ get rid of the calorie deficit, your body is primed to cling onto calories for dear life...
