    You get what you see
I saw a rich fuck giving charity
    Saw an evil emperor
    Wearing my clothes
    They're far from the best
But they might suit you better than the rest
    Just looking in the mirror
Will make you a brave man
    I know my place
    Hate my face
    I know how I begin
    And how I'll end
    Strung out again
    Was a parliament of owls
Fly over a city of canals
    Floating on the body
    Floating in the Dalles
    You get what you see
But some things they just change invisibly
    I don't know where I'm going
And I don't even want to know
    They're far from the best
But they might suit you better than the rest
    Just looking in the mirror
Will make you a brave man
    Standing, smiling
    On some fantasy island
Looking at my lost reflection again
    But a tide's coming in
    And I'm strung out again
    Strung out again

This is my favorite Elliott record, and this is one of the songs where the full on Beatles-White-Album noisy-guitar rock-band sound he was attempting to combine with his typically delicate acoustic songwriting really had a chance to flourish. Some of the tracks didn't have time to be layered all the way before his death, but on this one...god those surging guitars wailing illogically around a seemingly calm voice singing out "waving at my lost reflection again/tide's coming in/and I'm strung out again"...it's a real musical moment. One to come back to, if you have the strength.

mywhychromosome Was George his favorite Beatle? The way his lyrics are structured often reminds me of George. 😃

    • @mywhychromosome
      @mywhychromosome 8 років тому +2

soulCracka1 You know what, I had never considered that...he did cover George songs at shows occasionally, I think more than one actually. So that would make sense! In the Elliott Smith book, they discuss the Beatles a bunch, but mostly just in terms of their musical influence on him, although there is a section about people assuming he was only a Lennon fan and would think Paul was a sappy pop lightweight, and him angrily arguing with them haha

You've nailed that completely. This album is his complete go at the White Album and honestly I think its one of the best ever records ever made. The guitar riff combining with the melody in this track is like nothing Ive ever heard.
Besides Beatles..I also feel a bit of Marc Bolan T.Rex confidence coming through..particularly on "Don't Go Down"
I think Elliott was a sensitive guy..but had a narcissist side in his music that he wanted to be seen and adored.

Ah yes! & it well describes that situation, having to appear cohesive while your entire world seems to wanna fall apart at any moment.
Coast to Coast also seems (imo perfectly) full. "Thats why" with the two poets going on in each ear. Wow. He really takes it to another level to add layers in all sorts of ways.

    • @mywhychromosome
      @mywhychromosome 6 років тому

Yes!! "Coast to Coast" (at the time called Circuit Rider) was one of the completed ones, he talks about having his friend lay the poetry down over the finished track in one of his last interviews

So the 90s is a Nostalgic great time of Music you'll always hear mention of Nirvana, Sound Garden, Alice N' Chains ETC.
yes these bands hold a place in my heart however the lack of notoriety of Elliot Smith who is not like the others, or any musician Is Brilliance.
A one man band who fits into no defined genre. He is a literal Lyrical Genius with his poetry.
His natural ability to play dissonant chords and have it harmonize so beautifully. Absolute raw talent
He deserves to be mentioned just as much as all other associated bands in the 90s'
My dream is to have him acknowledged as belonging in the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame. He deserves the recognition , and has/will continue to be my inspiration and muse with-in my own music.

I've been listening to Tame Impala lately and it brings me back to Elliott. Being alone, hearing the sirens in your head but NOBODY was as raw as Elliott. I met him one night and as he and I sat there and he drew on my arm with a sharpie, I told him how much this song means to me and I told him why and he actually was concerned about my feelings as he said "Oh no! We're playing that song tonight" It was a much more beautiful song than the one that was released on Basement... Kevin Parker of Tame Impala and Elliott Smith and I will someday meet somewhere hopefully. That's that only way I can believe in heaven.

+Porkleaker.. > I totally agree man!! it IS SUCH a fucking shame dude!
she was trained in CPR and other things in that sort of field of work and she knew fuckin better than to pull the knife OUT of his chest also!! Ill bet if he woulda been able to make it to a hospital BEFORE she had pulled the knife out, he would have had a good chance at surviving. or at least a much better chance at survival anyway... Once a person is stabbed, the rule of thumb is that NO ONE should pull the blade OUT at all. not even slightly... It causes a secondary trauma to the wound and causes massive bleed out..I personally believe that Elliott Smith did NOT kill himself / stab HIMSELF in the chest. I dont believe that whatsoever not one bit... BUT lets jus make believe that he DID do it to himself, his evil controlling gal made it so much worse by pulling the blade out... Her knowing better (its been proven that she took courses on this type of shit) and yet DOING jus the opposite of what she had been trained not to do in that sorta situation, is a VERY clear and suspicious red flag that she WANTED Elliott dead... and why do ya think that is/was?? the fat and dirty dollars I tell you.. She tried suing Elliott's family for his estate, etc. or she at least put in an order claiming that Elliott promised to take care of her for all of her life with or without him in her life.. Hmmm... And she claimed that she had been his Manager the last four months of his life... ALL of her actions and everything she was fighting for was DENIED and thrown out entirely... One reason why is that Elliott's ACTUAL Manager came forward to mention that her claim of being his Manager those months, was NOT TRUE and that she appeared to be basically out to get easy money... If all her provisions and etc got denied and thrown out after she herself admitting how she pulled the blade out from his chesT and THEN called 911, ha my lord, if all of THAT shit doesnt show MOTIVE on her part, then I do not know what to say to anyone who says they think that he Elliott DID it to himself... Thats jus craziness if they could look past all of those there said FACTS and still believe that the man did it all to himself... Anyone who believes that, seriou needs to get fuckin real & grow a brain and think for themselves. and they need to GET A BACK BONE... (Not Elliott) ... Elliott was such a talent and such an amazingly gifted human being.. The guy had a lot tormenting him it appears in many ways Ive come to really see espesh after looking more into his life and death, and he wrote music and lyrics as a therapy and I find that him using his music as a tool in that way to do that with it as a beautiful thing really... that alone made him a very kind, empathetic, awesomely genuine and REAL human being & I really admire and respect Elliott for how talented and good he truly was as a singer songwriter,etc.. I see him as being one of the most creatively gifted (and perhaps even haunted by his gift of writing songs) performers/creative forces of all time... How he played ALL instruments to his songs and wrote ALL his own lyrics for each and every song, he was TRULY a musical GENIUS... Not many people can truly pull out of themselves, out of their minds the songs they hear and envision in their minds as great and well crafted as Elliott could and DID.... He to me was more much more gifted as a songwriter/musician than Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys... BOTH pretty much envisioned and heard songs in their minds and both of them pulled those songs OUT of their minds and IN to our ears so very well... The big difference in which I REALLY so very much admire and adore is that Brian Wilson only composed his own songs and told others how to play their instruments so they could try and match what Brian had in his mind... Elliott on the other hand, PLAYED/RECORDED each and every instrument in ALL of his songs he envisioned and wrote, he put the songs together himself peice by piece, bit by bit, HIMSELF rather that asking others to try and match what he heard in his mind, Elliott had the AMAZING TALENT of pulling it all out from himself by himself and that is why to me E. Smith is my all time favorite recording artist ever, hands down... No one comes close.. In my opinion he was truly a music man.. an honestly GIFTED gentle GENIUS with so much heart he died by the hand of someone else (His GF at the time or a hit man she had hired to do it) and stabbed in the heart becuz the killer couldnt deny how much heart Elliott truly HAD... RIP.

If youd written this in all caps, I think I'd probably lowkey hate you right now, but as it stands I'm moved. I also personally consider Elliott to be the greatest American songwriter maybe ever. To me, hes on a level sorta like Mozart (Mozart is fucking bananas muppets in space genius

Oops. I wasn't done. So yeah, totally Brian Wilson is no Elliott Smith. Love that you love this dide prob as much as I do. I really do.
As for his death, I don't know, man. I will agree Jennifer Chiba had motive, but although Idk much about her, I see her in a kinder light. I tend to think if Elliott loved her so much to share so much of his life with her and she was able to do the same with the most tragic man who ever fucking lived, that there must be much redemption and grace in her.
Another thing I recall is a live concert vid I saw on here years ago that tore me right up inside, where he was a total mess and almost too fucked up to play at all. He kept giving up on songs halfway through amd he had like these dirty ass long locks of hair straight looking as 90s grunge junkie trash af. The audience were super cool and tried to help him, said encouraging things. Several times hed said he cant do it and tried to walk off stage where J Chizzlez would intercept him. You could see she was doing most of the talking and after a munute he'd turn around and walk back out and break my heart a little more before trying to give up, which she would not let him do. Two things about this I find compelling and relevant. One, she really did seem to care and have his interests in mind. She seemed calm and direct and patient. Two, in this case she was absolutely acting like his manager. Wouldnt surprise me if she was the only one at that point who coulda gotten him to turn around try again.
The last thing I want to say is that I think its also important to remember that Elliott made it no secret that he wanted to kill himself or that he might and don't anybody dare pity him for that. For years and years and he tried a few times, like when he jumped off that cliff drinking with a bunch of friends. Just something to keep in mind. He was sober for what? Two years? One? Well, thats the point a lot of recovering addicts realize shit, this is it. I'm not doing drugs again. This is it. They get fatalistic about it all. I bet he was going through that, too. Being who he was and what he believed, I don't find it at all surprising. Just some thoughts.

I'm too tired to write out a proper reply with what's on my mind, as I literally cannot keep my eyes open, but I just want to say that I'm really glad you posted this in response to the original comment. I agree with you entirely, and this pretty much exactly what I say to people who who say they think Jennifer killed him. Sure, the circumstances are incredibly unusual, but if you knew Elliott and a lot about his life, it seems all too fitting. The man was troubled, and he had unimaginable demons. He was also only clean for (I think) 30 days, and he gave up not just heroin, but crack, caffeine, red meat, refined sugar, alcohol, and some other substances too. That puts you in a very vulnerable state. We lost a timid, godly legend who will forever be in our hearts, but I try to rest easy by siding with the notion that everything was of his own doing.
In summation, I agree with your stance on the matter. People who feel this way aren't "literally retarded", or whatever the original commenter said.
Rest easy, Elliott - because we love you.

+Porkleaker speculations, speculations... i don´t think she murdered him. as far as i know there are no evidences and he was very depressive. the same with kurt cobain. the wife/girlfriend has to struggle. first of all because of the loss of her beloved friend and secondary against the mediy and the angry fans who think they know them personally what really is a fake idea. he killed himself and thats it. it´s a great loss but don´t blame anyone who you don´t know!

    • @lucassmith4524
      @lucassmith4524 8 років тому +9

+grimgolf79 Still. When I hear about suicide by knife red flags always go up. When I hear that it wasn't slit wrists and a punctured femoral artery, and learn that the cause of death was a knife to the heart, I get suspicious. I'm not saying his girlfriend did it. I'm not even saying that he didn't kill himself (knife through the heart kind of fits, in a way) all I'm saying is it is an awful strange and worth taking a second or third look.
I would have thought he would have intentionally overdosed. That's how I would do it. 3 or 4 100 mg morohines, 10 blue Xanax, a fifth of expensive scotch, and a bag over my head to aid asphyxiation. Nice and easy and no mess that some poor teenager has to clean up, potentially scaring him/her for life.
Ultimately, the fact that we love Elliot Smith for his music, his way with words, and for his ability to echo our thoughts and feelings in such a beautiful way, means that what he did was a crime committed against us.

    • @lucassmith4524
      @lucassmith4524 8 років тому +4

+grimgolf79 We must look at his suicide for what it really is: the act of a selfish man who robbed us all of the beauty and the truth of his talent and the cathartic healing ability of his music. Now, as we listen to his music, it is changed and carries with it the sadness of his completely preventable suicide. We listen to the music and a little voice says, "he allowed his pain to crush him in the end." And that is a crime if there ever was one. If you are considering suicide please remember that it won't effect you much more than killing you. It is your friends and family that now must live with the burden of your passing. Death is easy, but life is hard. I know that it can seem too hard to bear sometimes but please don't give up the fight. There is help. Be strong enough to search for that help and to ask for that help once you find it. If not for your sake, for the sake of others. Fight.

+Lucas Smith You're pretending that Elliot Smith owes us anything. I don't think it's selfish that he took his own life. The man emitted all of his emotion through his music, and his life was forfeit because of it. It's better to have 1 beautiful album than 20 okay albums.

    Saw an evil emperor
    Wearing my clothes
    They're far from the best
But they might suit you better than the rest
    Just looking in the mirror
Will make you a brave man
    I know my place
    Hate my face
    I know how I begin
    And how I'll end
    Strung out again
    Was a parliament of owls
Fly over a city of canals
    Floating on the body
    Floating in the Dalles
    You get what you see
But some things they just change invisibly
    I don't know where I'm going
