EVH used a Palmer PD103 speaker simulator which has 4 lineout jacks which I'm not sure if he summed all these 4 lineout jacks after going to 4 different guitar pedals. His main rig was a marshall 50 watt using a lineout box that went to Two 1176 compressors in series that then went to a marshall 50 watt or 100 watt input jack. This was a slaving technique but using two 1176 compressors in series between the slaved amplifiers. The Marshall#2 slaved amplifier lineout box was a Palmer PD103 since it has 4 lineouts you can do a wet, dry, wet rig that goes to a detuner eventide. You should make a video lesson about this set up because you want the eventide detuner input to have the slaved EVH compressed marshall tone driving the eventide detuner for a wet, dry, wet.
The snare drum on "Ain't..." sounds almost dry on one speaker and the reverb sounds on the other speaker. Its amazing what you can do with a mixing board.
Uncle Mason, I too have an original gray-box MXR Flanger and it's by far the best sounding flanger I've ever owned EXCEPT for the noise floor. Any tips on how to mitigate that? My rig consists of an always on comp (Cali76), followed by three OD each set for lower gain (I stack them for lead tones). Would I be better off running the flanger before or after the drives? I'm thinking before, to not amplify the gain of the OD's. Thoughts?
Hello I am a new subscriber so discovered your channel after doing a search for Building a Van Halen Pedal board ... Looking forward to the setup of the pedals and the tones!
I thought Eddie had one of those VoX units around 78. I bid on 1 for couple 100$’s cuz I swore I saw it in some photos. FYI, anyone wanting just the Echoplex (Eric Johnson tone in my case) for the preamp tone don’t waste money on the “Secret Preamp” boxes. The Dunlop seems to do the job.
My Echoplex doesn’t play well with other pedals. There’s quite a whine with it. I tried 100, 300, 500mm and it just doesn’t work without an it’s own power supply. There are certainly better power supplies out there than what I’m using, but none of my other delays have this issue.
Samuel Granger It will be fine with an isolated supply. Was fine on this rig with zero noise. Are you using an isolated supply? What is 500mm? Do you mean milliamps (mA)?
Vertex Effects it was fairly cheap, but it still said “isolated” when I bought it. Do pedal power supply companies just use that as a nonsense buzzword? And yes, ma not mm. 😆
@@mulfss I don't remember what we ended up with but we got a hold of some of older Japanese articles which detailed the signal path, it's pretty well documented out there.
You “don’t remember”? Yeah, right. And the “dog ate my homework” That must be one of the lamest UNHELPFUL responses ever. Surely you can do a little better than that. Good thing we can figure things out on our own, without jerks like you, who have zero interest in actually helping people/guitar players attain the tone they are searching for/attempting to replicate. Shame on you.
Yeah, and I tried the small MXR six band EQ, also the boss GE-7, but nothing seems to add to the tone. Just takes away. I end up just using it flatlined, with a little volume boost, on the boss GE. But with this, I’m not going through a cranked Marshall. I’m using the Friedman BE-OD. I’m thinking, that pedal is so gnarly, sounds great on its own. So, trying to add an EQ with that just muddy things up. I was wondering if that is the case, when using newer, distortion-type pedals-if an EQ is really needed? I could see it needed for a cranked Marshall, no distortion pedal, trying to shape that tone a bit. That’s what I’m doing next, finally going back to a Marshall stack, to continue the tone search. I was trying to downsize, using a Seymour Duncan power stage 170, getting the right pedals, going through a 2 x 12 with vintage 30s. But that was all just giving me too much gain. 😝🤘🏻🎸🇺🇸
I'm waiting on a few more parts to arrive.for my new board. Mostly new production MXR. I'm going to try using an MXR 10 band EQ. It's quieter, and cleaner than the Boss I tried previously. I do play through a 68 plexi clone with master volume. I'm not sure if Eddie used the EQ to compensate for his A5 magnet pickups, or if it was for the amp. I have one Wolfgang, and one frankenstrat with a SD Frankenstein pickup, both have A2 magnets which tend to be more mid heavy. Regardless, the EQ has a switch. I thought maybe it can be used to compensate for whatever. I also got the MXR reverb which seems to be versatile. I'm going to try a Joyo PXL Pro controller. I know it's cheap, but I hope it works out. All it really does is switching, and I like that it takes unused pedals out of the signal chain. If it doesn't work out for EVH stuff, I'll use it on my old board. Thanks for your reply.
@@qua7771the eq was used simply for certain guitars that lacked the mids, to match the tone of his other guitars. I also have a 68-69 plexi, they are great amps

Joe MArabella: Alright, Eddie went from his Frankie or Shark into a MXR M117R. Then the output went into a 1974 MXR Phase 90 script Phase Shifter and to his Maestro Ep-3 Echoplexs. Each Echoplex had BOSS GE-10 Graphic EQs. He also had a WW2 Practice Bomb, which sometimes housed his Echoplexs but mainly his two Univox Ec-80a Tape Delays (one most likely for backup) for the end of Eruption. Also on his pedalboard was a separate pedal chain, with a 70s MXR Blue EQ, and two switching boxes, most likely for switching between the Shark and Destroyer and his Unfinished Strat backup for Eruption/YRGM, Switching songs and if a string broke or Amp blew up. Also on the pedalboard Eddie had the Echoplex switches. For the amps, Eddie used mainly 100watt Marshall Super Lead Plexis with Variac Voltage Regulators. For Cabinets he used Marshall 4x12s with 25watt Celestion Greenbacks. Then later recording Van Halen (1978) in 1977 Ted Templeman and Donn Landee added plate reverb and stereo panned Eddies guitar to the left, and added some delay/echo. You can here Eddie actually use the delay from the Echoplex (he mainly used the preamp) on tracks like ATBL or the chorus to On Fire. The modded Univox EC-80a was used for the end of eruption and the solo to Atomic Punk. Hope this clears everything up, answers your question and helps everyone understand Eddies 78 pedalboard.
