I have this awesome idea for an old dutch estate map set in the 1960's as the horse moved out and the american tractors moved in. Old equipment and all, but I've got no idea were to start and would love help from better modders. I live close to it and could offer help on every detail and sort of equipment that was used.
Pff it worked for me but indeed lots of hassle. Problem with the DEM is that buildings are seen as hights as well. In The Netherlands almost everything except canals and ditches are flat and houses and buildings now show as hills. With smoothing things out you can make it all flat again but it's a lot of work. It would be great if we could somehow make our grass the google earth picture (just for editing). Now you keep raising and lowering the plane. Anyway, great tuto, thanks for your effort!
For anyone getting an Error "Cannot modify a read-only dataset." while trying to open the DEM file, you need to change your Systems region to English (United States). Go to Control Panel -> Region and Language -> Formats tab Change your region format to English (United States). Then restart Microdem and try to open your dataset again. Mine was set to English (Australia) and the program didn't like it. Now it works great. Great video ShyWizard, earned a new sub :)
You should make the opacity of the DEM 100%, since you are using the background image to locate fields etc. . Also, what is the height difference in-game per pixel value? btw, since i only wanted the elevation, i just cropped my area in microDEM and exported as greyscale.

Hey, i have a question about a video you made quite a loooong time ago for fs15 where you add crops to a seeder, now in fs19 it says "sowingMachine" any idea how i can make it do corn etc aswell? i don't wanna get a seeder mod since i like the model of the one i have xD
Other than doing it through a script (Which i would not be able to help with) & would require a modded seeder. This can be done in the fruitTypes.xml under fruitTypeCategory section. Just look for the line WHEAT BARLEY OAT CANOLA SOYBEAN OILSEEDRADISH GRASS and add MAIZE. I would not recommend to do this with base game files & only for modded maps which would require you to make a custom fruitTypes.xml.

It seems MicroDEM got rid of the save as portion and now I'm stuck trying to get the damn image to Google Earth. I'm being reminded why I only made one map in FS17, it's a downright pain in the ass!
The page with the SRTM data is loading. But the map to select the area does not load and everything remains gray without a real world map behind it. No matter which browser I use. Can you help me there? Or download something for me? I need the files from Sasketechwan. The place I want to recreate is called Bracken. That would be nice, thank you.
Thanks help a lot - i went to get lidar data from here environment.data.gov.uk/DefraDataDownload/?Mode=survey - and just got a black and white DTM image and then adjusted the contrast in photoshop to get the height scales correct. Worked pretty well. No need for all the dem software
i seem to be having a slight issue. Ive got my DEM done in microdem and everything but i cant find a way to export it to google earth. and now every time i try to re-open the dem in microdem it wont open. you never really explained what to do with cgis except that it adds files as well. any solution?
I have not used these programs in some time but i believe due to copy right changes with Google Earth these features have been removed. There are many paid methods for creating map dem files but i have not used them so can't offer an opinion.
Have you tried just to drag and drop the tiff file you downloaded in google earth? Then just choose crop and click on the map where you want it. Works perfectly for me and is already in grayscale. Dont use print screen or sniping tool unless you have 4K or higher res screen, instead click on save image in google earth and choose highest res possible, trust me, you want all the detail possible.
Tbh i would never use any of these methods as i have tried many & none give the results i really want. This was something i had done back in 17 but was never really happy with the results so never uploaded, but was asked to do & upload a video so updated for 19. I much prefer the made up maps rather that one's based on rl area's as you are able to make it how ever you want & not be restricted trying to match to the area it's based on. If the method you mention works for you it may help other's who read the comments so thanks for sharing.
Another thing, there's plenty of free LiDAR dem maps out there, just have to spend some more time googling. And 20m DEM has way more detail than 30m SRTM.
@@shywizard2979 Thats why i commented. Really wanted to make map of place where i grew up, so i followed a tutorial just like yours. And as you said theres not much detail in the dem file. I couldnt even recognize the place, so i gave up. FS19 came out and i tried again, this time i spent a whole week and finally found better dem map. And the difference it maid was unbelievable!
@@strauts66 I spent a long time trying to get this working for 17 & also gave up on ever getting to work. It would seem for other locations around the world this info is more readily available but harder to find for the UK or comes at a £ cost. I will take the information you have provided & look into it further & see if i can improve on the method shown in the video.
Not sure if anyone reads this. but i got a problem when zooming in. if i zoom in my grid changes. i mean that my east coordinate is 4.34 which is the middle of the netherlands. but when i zoom in with 20% the coordinate 4.34 is nearly in the sea. Any help please i tried to search on the web but i couldnt find much.

It's a blank starter map that i created in giants editor using the Felsbrunn map as a base. U can do the same using Ravenport if u prefer the terrain & foliage textures used on that map.

It's possible that some functions in Google earth have changed since recording & posting this video. I have not done anything with either Google earth or map dem creation in some time.

I had the same issue. Right click on the screen in MicroDEM and go to export. The option for putting on Google Earth is there.

know why I do not have Save Map As Image as shown at 19:00 on video; I just get Save DEM/Grid oh and save image too
