I just moved to a small town in Texas, population 800, from Missouri. My car insurance doubled! I suggest setting up your budget as if you already live here. Write out rent, utilities, food at least and search online for cost of living in the town you are moving to. Every month when you pay your $100 rent, take what rent will be here and put that in savings...at least $700 more if you have a roomate and don't want to live in a crack neighborhood. For food, whatever you spend now, times it by 10. No joke. I'm not trying to be a bummer, just a realist. Also, don't assume you will make more money. You can do it! It's just going to take planning.
I moved away from Texas in 2019 and came back to California. When I was in Texas my health insurance was $500 a month. Here in California I have medical instead
You know I love me a budget bestie. I can’t believe this is the last one of the year. I would concentrate on the emergency fund and pay off the credit card. The less interest paid the better. 🧦🧦
Also to add our budget bestie might want to watch American budgeters to get a sense of what we have to budget/ spend money on here in American and get a basic understanding of what cost of living is like here in a general sense.
American here. I hope in the moving cost the budget bestie has factor in visa/ immigration fee, immigration lawyers fees & etc unless the partner is going to eat the cost. To As an American to move here place to place can run us over $1,000 USD on the cheap side. So I would triple it if coming from overseas. Also what our UK bestie has to consider where in Texas they are moving to. America in my opinion is twice as expensive as the UK and where you move in America is what is going to drive your cost of living. If the bestie is moving to a big city such as Houston, Dallas, or Austin, prices are high. If they are moving to a small town, the cost will be lower than the city but it’ll be higher than what they are used to. They visit their partner but they might want to discuss what the prices are like here in America.
Excellent budget revisions I live in Texas and it is expensive. I would add another fund for at two - three months for living in Texas. Once the have the fully funded emergency fund and pay off the credit card, I would go back to adding to the emergency fund as if they were living in Texas. This way they can contribute towards the household. Also you definitely need a car in Texas so maybe consider that as well 🧦🧦
This is hard as there are so few details. I agree with changing the car. I know diesel are being phased out but they're so much more economical. I'd worry given their age it's an online relationship so may not last. So yeah save up to maybe move abroad. But also think of life if that changes. Also pay off that credit card. It builds far too quick 🧦🧦
❤ I found this really helpful! I am budgeting but then struggle with the buffer and always end up with an empty account at the end of the fortnight and have no idea where it has gone.. what would you do if that was the case for you?
