  • Most small airplanes don't have air conditioning so you have to get creative to stay cool. And trust me, it's gets roasty toasty in the cockpit! I love these window shades!

    As a pilot IRL, the easiest way to cool down is to climb to a higher altitude. Those blockers are not FAA approved, limit your visibility (hence safety) and absorb heat, which is then radiated back inside the cabin.

Insurance and the faa are gonna have a field day if an accident ever occurred. Pilot error due to reduced visibility and situational awareness.

    At 7k feet the air vents in the wings would surely keep it cool. In my Cessna 150 if I have the vents opened all the way it keeps it pretty cool.

      @@Doikel - I don’t know about that. Houston to Amarillo is a pretty long trip. Manage you fuel right, and you can fly roundtrip on full tanks. El Paso one-way Is also doable. It would still take hours.

    If you’re at 7000 ft and it’s still hot open the vents 😂 I fly my plane around yuma and Vegas in the summer at 6500-7500 and it feels good up there. Also you can take a cooler with those ten dollar refreezable packs and put them between your back and the seat and it really helps.

      like seriously, cars are extremely dangerous when compared to even single-engine aircraft, and you can't use this shit in your car.       @@saviet4222not always true. If your flying VFR it is solely the responsibility of the PIC to continuously check for traffic. There could be a piper cub with no radio and no transponder at 5,500. As long as that aircraft stays below 10,000MSL he’s perfectly legal to fly without radio or transponder. The shades aren’t necessarily dangerous but if you had a mid air collision and the NTSB or FAA saw this, you would absolutely be at fault.

      This is incorrect. I do agree with you that it’s a bad idea to put sun screens up but it is still completely legal. Also an instrument rating wouldn’t even do anything to make it legal if the screens were blocking her entire view. Any time you are flying simulated imc, you need a safety pilot regardless of if you have an ir.

      @GoofyAhhHorror I am a CFII (instrument flight instructor). I don't want to sound like a know it all but I promise you that even if you have an instrument rating, you still have to have a safety pilot if you're simulated IMC (instrument meteorological conditions). What you're talking about is simulated IMC, usually we have the student wear a hood or special glasses that make it so they can only see the instrument panel. I doubt your dad's instructor actually blacked out the windows, they probably used a hood or foggles. If the instructor did somehow cover up the windows, that would not be legal. Under simulated IMC, you have to have someone who can see outside of the airplane.

    As I’ve read in some comments they are a see through. But still won’t be enough sometimes to spot the traffic. Sometimes we be flying daytime and trying to focus to spot the traffic where we just got notified by the ATC and take a good minute to spot it.

    You can actually install a small air window on most light aircraft without any problem. Just, make sure that it stays closed when you want it to.

    Yes, you can see thru them. Numerous times I've had ATC tell me, traffic was at some position and it was a small dot. The darkness of this could present a problem under those circumstances.

    Even on 90 degree days here in Michigan, I have never been hot at 7,000 ft. It's always so nice and cool up there. I would be leery of not being able to see traffic through those.

    All these comments about blocking visibility, unapproved devices, absorbing heat, etc. and not one of you thought that this young lady is a professionally trained pilot from probably one of our superb American PART141 schools where kids teach kids to be kid pilots. I give her the benefit of the doubt that she would only use approved accessories that in no way would obstruct her vision in the VFR environment.

    Ever tried the cooler full-on ice with a fan trick? Get a cooler cut some holes in stall some small pc fans that blow over the ice and cool you small plane. I bet it would work fairly well for ya. Toss it in the backnseat and let it go

      If you are actually a pilot then you know that the temperatures decreases approximately 1 degree for every 140 feet of elevation above ground level
      So at 7000’ the temperature will be approximately 50 degrees cooler than on the runway
      Open the vent let in the cool air and don’t use anything that might block your view
      So if it’s 110 degrees in Arizona on the deck it’s 60 degrees at 7k feet

    That's cool and all, but I wouldnt recommend it as the adhesive might have a reaction with the acrylic windows/windscreen. Also, any residues might interfere with your vision if your flying towards the sun or airport lighting at night.

    I love flying my dad's C-172, I got that nice shade plus the wing vents and the door windows open even in flight. Perfect for staying cool

    Agree with top comment, not worth risking visibility. Planes do cross eachother. A better idea that'd actually work would be using a device to channel air from the outside in from the tiny window flap.

    Window tinting will help as well. The same window tint you use for your cars the glass so cut down the heat released 50% my opinion

    1. UV and IR protection film is clear
    2. If you block the sun from the inside, the inside still heats up.

    I built a battery powered portable vehicular air conditioner in 2011. Basically insulated lunchbox filled with ice water, rubber hose attached to an intake fan and a fan to expell the cooled air. Used it in my ghetto car.

    G,day from Sydney Australia.
    You can make an ice cooler box with a recharge battery fan. You buy two bags of ice on the way to the airport have a unit in the car and transfer it to the back seat of the plane. See You Tube video how to make one. A Ryobi fan and Coleman: that's it.

    Get ceramic tint. You can get it in like 95% and they block most heat.

    Those might be “see through” but they do limit your visibility. Would not recommend especially in an airplane
