This was unfortunately the censored version you reacted to, the song is about police brutality, the 7 words are “you have the right to remain silent”
Deftones is my all time favorite band, and although their first record isn't bad their work after this is where deftones signature unique, ethereal, dreamy yet heavy sound is birthed and my personal favorite sound from them.
I recommend digital bath, be quiet and drive far away, rosemary, rx queen, entombed, cherry waves, xerces, sextape, change, minerva, and beware. Deftones have so many bangers it would take all day for me to name them lol.
Deftones is one of the best bands still around, this song is an oldie when they were young & still figuring out their sound, you need to check out their later work. They are NOT like System of a Down, they have their own unique sound. Change, Digital Bath, Be Quite & Drive, Rosemary, & You’ve Seen the Butcher are some good choices to get a feel on the band’s signature sound
Yeah, this song is old. Way older than the band, who formed in 1988/89. Chino wrote the lyrics when he was an actual kid

@@notimportant3686 nah, I argue it is inferior in every way & they got exponentially better after this album, there’s a reason why Adrenaline didn’t become the icon the next two albums did. Great for it’s time, but not quite as focused & tight of an album as most that came after
@@py16667 i mean, the quality of the production is the only thing holding it back, the ABSOLUTE BEST RIFFS they ever wrote are on this album and i don't think it's debatable... as subjective as it is, it is a literal fact
@@notimportant3686 I’m gonna have to disagree there again lol the riffs on ATF top em all, more honed in on Steph’s signature sound, catchier, some riffs are punchier, others sound more pleasant to the ear, like I said, exponential improvement all around, it’s absolutely debatable imo

This song is from 1995, first SOAD came out in 1998. If either of them copied the other, it was definitely not Deftones.
This song was actually written in the mid 80's when Chino was a kid. It's older than the band itself
and deftones was formed in 1988/89 at any rate

Kind of amazing that the song that popped into your head to relate to SOAD was prison song. Because this song has to do with wrongful arrests and how bias the police force is towards brown and black people. So nice!
But yeah they are completely not like SOAD. Best description I heard for Deftones was “sexmetal” which you won’t feel in the adrenaline album because this was deftones before they found their “sound” or niche. Adrenaline was Deftones anger/angst album. Deftones (self-titled album), around the fur, White Pony and moving forward is Deftones. You can see their progression as you move through their discography.
Lol who told you they’re like SOAD? I’m obsessed with both bands & I can confirm, they are very, very different, they both have their own style but this song wasn’t the best from Deftones catalog to be introduced to the band imo

Oh if you wanna learn to play guitar, I would say this is a good band to start-- the first two albums are mostly simple heavy riffs and then their third album White Pony was a really good guitar record that can teach you a lot of cool easy tricks on a guitar. And you can find a lot of tabs and videos of their guitar parts online. Imagine hearing this for the first time when you're 12, just got a guitar, are still sad about Kurt Cobain and are starting to understand the layers of institutional racism. All the punk, metal, grunge and goth people loved this when it came out, even if they deny it now.
If you havent done System of a Down Question? I would highly recommend that song. It will probably become your favorite and its overlooked a lot.

Sorry but Deftones came out before SOAD but they are definitely totally different and this isn’t their best song they have many in their catalog and they have been going for close to (if not longer) than 30 years as a band
